Notes: The nucleophilic attack of substituted anilines at position 6 of methyl coumalate (1) opens the α-pyrone ring to form 4-arylamino-3-(methoxycarbonyl)butadien-1-carboxylic acid 2 (Scheme 1). The latter are easily decarboxylated at room temperature in polar aprotic solvents to 1-arylamino-2-(methoxycarbonyl)butadiene 4 which smoothly undergo regio- and stereospecific Diels-Alder reactions with different dienophiles.

Notes: Syntheses of 3-Hydroxy-4-methyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (Methylmoniliformin)New routes to 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (9), the lowest homologue of the mycotoxine moniliformin are described. A common feature of all pathways is the synthesis of methylcyclobutanes having the oxidation level 6. Precursors, which are easily transformed to 9 by acid catalyzed hydrolysis, include [2+2]-cycloadducts of in situ generated methyl ketene to tetraethoxyethylene and [2+2]-photocycloadducts of dichlorovinylenecarbonate with 1,1-dichloro-1-propene. The acid hydrolysis of [2+2]-cycloadducts of chlorotrifluoroethylene to N, N-diethyl-1-propynylamine yields the diethylamide of 9 (=22) in 50% overall yield. In addition, a convenient one-pot-two-steps synthesis of a new electronrich ethylene, 1,1,2-triethoxy-2-trimethylsilyloxy-ethylene (11), is described.

Notes: Operational characteristics have been determined for fused silica capillary column (FSCC) GC/MS as applied to “extractable” priority polutants. Chromatographic data show excellent relative retention time (RRT) intralaboratory precision and interlaboratory accuracy when multiple internal standards are empolyed. Potential chromatographic problems, such as column overload and “double peaking”, are addressed. Response factor relative standard deviations (RSD) at 50 ng for most of the extractable priority pollutants over the long term indicated precise determination (i.e. RSD generally ≤ 10%). Linearity was demonstrated over two orders of magnitude for FSCC GC/MS analysis of compounds with relatively low and high RF (response factor) values. Potential quantitative problems, such as saturation, are discussed. For certain aromatic priority pollutants interlaboratory RF agreement was observed. This was noted as perhaps the most important property of FSCC GC/MS analysis when the multiple internal standard approach is utilized. Determinations of extractable priority pollutants are directly compared for paced column GC/MS and FSCC GC/MS analysis of separate and composited extracts. For six extracts analyzed in triplicate, the latter configuration was shown to produce more consistent results. In view of the superior analysis logistics of composite extract FSCC GC/MS analysis, this approach was established as the preferred method for the analysis of priority pollutants classified as extractable.

Notes: A quality control procedure for Fused Silica Capillary Column Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five laboratories. The average relative standard deviation (RSD) of interlaboratory response factors for fifty three compounds of environmental interest determined at each laboratory at nominal injected weights of 20, 100, and 200 ng was found to be 18.9% for four of the five laboratories which participated in this work. These data demonstrate that similar response factors can be attained in routine GC/MS measurements when adequate quality control is maintained.

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclic Cross-Conjugated Bond Systems, 381) Fourteen Electron Electrocyclisation of the Vinylogous Sesquifulvalene - PhenazuleneThe vinylogous sesquifulvalene 1 thermally undergoes 14-electron electrocyclisation with ease (Ea = 100 ± 2kj·mol-1, log A = 12.0) and perispecifically. Due to the steric constraints imposed by the system it takes place - almost certainly exclusively - in the “symmetry-forbidden”, conrotatory sense to give trans- 10a, 10b-dihydrophenazulene 2a. This is rapidly isomerized into the benzenoid 1,8- and 3,8- dihydrocyclohept[e]indenes 12/15 and is therefore not directly detectable. The trans-stereochemistry in 2a is verified by x-ray crystal analysis of its 1:1-adduct with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (20). The benzylidenecyclohept[e]indenes 28a-c(obtainable from 12/15) could not be isomerised prototropically to the benzylphenazulenes 30a-c. Treatment of the cation 31 (generated from 28a) with nucleophiles also fails to produce phenazulene derivatives (34). The phenazulenium salts 38/39 are, depending on the counteranion, obtainable from 12 (15) in solution (BF-4, ClO-4) or crystalline (SbCl-6, 1/2 PtCl2-6 EE). From the BF-4 salt a deep-blue compound is generated which is stable below -60°C and in the presence of a large excess of DBN, but polymerises above 0°C or in the presence of SiO2 or Al2O3 (-60°C). It is concluded, that this blue species is phenazulene (3).
Notes: Das vinyloge Sesquifulvalen 1 geht thermisch leicht (Ea = 100 ± 2kJ.

Notes: The simultaneous acquisition of both positive ion and negative ion data under chemical ionization mass spectrometric conditions can aid in the confirmation of assignments made by electron impact gas chromatography mass spectrometry or electron capture gas chromatography. Pulsed positive ion negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry coupled with fused-silica capillary column gas chromatographic methods is shown to be useful in environmental and hazardous waste sample analysis. The chemical ionization conditions which maximize sensitivity and the amount of molecular ion information for the priority pollutants are presented. Replicates of response factors for these compounds show good precision. Saturation is observed about 10 ng for those pesticides which give linear responses from 50 pg to 1-10 ng.

Notes: N,N-diisopropylamides and -thioamides show hindered rotation around the N—CH bonds, and the presence of mixtures of conformational isomers can be demonstrated at temperatures below 273 K in solution. 1H and 13C NMR spectra of these conformers are measured and assigned. The 13C data serve to study through-space effects on 13C chemical shifts, which strongly depend on the conformations of the isopropyl groups. For amides, a through-space shielding of the N-methine carbons is found to exist only for conformers in which the methine hydrogen atom is spatially close to the oxygen atom. Chemical shift differences between amides and thioamides can be rationalized in terms of through-bond and through-space contributions, and serve for a better understanding of the shift differences in N,N-dialkylamides and -thioamides.
