Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the computation of the depth to the magnetic interface from the total magnetic field intensity values obtained along profiles in the offshore area between Vengurla and Rajapur bay off the West Coast of India, by the application of one dimensional spectral analysis method. From the response characteristics of the total field magnetic values it is surmised that the magnetic interface may be identified with the Deccan trap series of rocks which are likely to form the magnetic basement rocks in this area. The plot of depths to the basement rocks as obtained from spectral analysis indicates that the basement is sloping towards outer edge of the Continental Shelf though not uniformly.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a study of the experimental lower boundb L, on the root-mean-squared impact parameter of the multiparticle production in 70 GeV/c p-nucleon interaction. It has been observed that theb L decreases with increasing final state multiplicity (n) at this fixed energy. The results are in good agreement with those of other authors.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an extensive study on the dependence of the mean number of the fast fragment of the target nucleus 〈n g〉 on the incident beam energy in proton-nucleus interaction in emulsion in the range 6·2≦E 0≦400 GeV/c. It has been observed that 〈n g〉 decreases in the range 6·2≦E 0≦200 GeV/c, then increases and attains an approximately steady value up to 400 GeV/c. It is very difficult to explain this behaviour with the help of the existing nuclear production models.

Notes: Abstract This essay aims at constructing an abstract mathematical system which, when interpreted, serves to portray group-choices among alternatives that need not be quantifiable. The system in question is a complete distributive lattice, on which a class of non-negative real-valued homomorphisms is defined. Reinforced with appropriate axioms, this class becomes a convex distributive lattice. If this lattice is equipped with a suitable measure, and if the mentioned class of homomorphisms is equipped with a metric, then the class and its convex sets are seen to possess certain characteristic properties. The main result (Theorem 6) follows from a combination of these results and a famous result due to Choquet. The mathematical scheme is then interpreted in the subject-language of ‘choice among alternatives’. It is shown, by means of an example, that the system furnishes all the ingredients for describing multi-group choices. Whether or not the same ingredients are also adequate for a behavioural theory of multi-group choices is an issue that will not be gone into. However, the example effectively illustrates how a process of bargaining can be described with the aid of the mathematical scheme. In the second example, a class of bargaining situations is modelled in the symbolism of linear programming with several objective functions combined with unknown ‘weights’; the ‘cost’ vectors in such formulations are identified with homomorphisms, and the main theorem of this essay is applied.

Notes: Abstract The object of the present paper is to investigate the radial motion of a solid spherical body, assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic and elastic, in presence of a magnetic field in the azimuthal direction. The body is assumed to be in a state of initial stress which is hydrostatic in nature. This theory of radial motion of a solid spherical body in a magnetic field has been utilised to find the small radial motion of a solid Earth assumed to be homogeneous isotropic elastic sphere in presence of a magnetic field in the azimuthal direction. Considering the effect of gravity and the initial stress produced by slow process of creep due to extra masses over the surface of the Earth, the fundamental equations of motion are derived which are non-linear in character and are solved. The times of a desired radial displacement are calculated in presence of a magnetic field only and in presence of the same magnetic field, initial stress and gravitational field, which are compared and exhibited numerically.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and processing of the major storage proteins in soybean cotyledons was studied both in vivo and in vitro. The α and α′ subunits of 7S as well as the 11S proteins are synthesized as higher molecular weight-precursors on membrane-bound polysomes. The initial translation products of the 7S are proteolytically cleaved during translation suggesting the removal of a ‘signal peptide’ as evidenced by the presence of 2α and 2α′ peptides immunoreactive with 7S antibody in the in vitro chain completion products of the membrane-bound polysomes. This is followed or accompanied by cotranslational glycosylation, which increases their size equivalent to that of initially-synthesized precursors. In vivo pulse-labelled 7S α and α′ products are of slightly higher molecular weights than the immunoprecipitable chain-completion products, indicating further post-translational modifications. A slow post-translational processing during a period of 1.5 to 16 h yields the final 7S α and α′ glycoproteins. Acidic and basic subunits of the 11S protein appear to be synthesized from common large molecular weight (60K-59K) precursors. Antibodies to the 11S acidic component recognize both acidic and basic domains in the precursor while those raised against basic subunits appear to be specific for that region only. The processing of the 11S precursor is also very slow and occurs post-translationally. This slow rate of processing, coupled with a temporal difference in the synthesis of 7S and 11S components, suggests a highly coordinated mechanism for synthesis and packaging of these proteins into protein bodies during seed development.

Notes: Abstract Oligodeoxynucleotides complementary to the deduced mRNA sequence of soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) were used to prime the synthesis of cDNA from soybean cotyledon total poly(A) RNA. The primed cDNA was used to select clones from a Glycine max cotyledon cDNA library. Two out of twelve hybridizing clones were shown to contain KTI cDNA. The nucleotide sequence of one clone, pSTI 9-2, was determined and it was found to encompass the complete protein coding region of KTI excet for three C-terminal residues. Trypsin inhibitor is synthesized with a 25 amino acid hydrophobic N-terminal sequence presumed to be a signal peptide. The mature polypeptide encoded by pSTI 9-2 agrees with the published amino acid composition of KTI, but contains two discrepancies at the peptide sequence level.

Notes: Abstract Callus cultures were established from node and internode segments of Dioscorea floribunda Mart. & Gal. Both Murashige and Skoog's and modified White's medium supported callusing as well as organogenesis when supplemented with either 2,4-D or NAA in combination with BAP or Kn. On development of shoot primordia, calli were transferred to unsupplemented, half strength MS basal medium. This procedure led to the increase in formation of shoots. Several ‘crops’ of shoots were obtained from single differentiating callus cultures by excising the shoots and subculturing the residual part. Seventy percent of plantlets survived rooting and transfer to soil. When they were maintained in half-strength MS basal medium and 0.5 mg1-1 of NAA, 70% of plantlets formed aerial tubers at nodes. These tubers produced both roots and shoots and could be detached from the mother plant.
