Notes: Summary Cytochemical detection of ascorbic acid in cultured root tips of Zea mays shows that dividing cells accumulate ascorbic acid in the cytoplasm. The localization pattern alters in the root tip as the cells begin to elongate. In elongating cells ascorbic acid is distinctly localized on cell walls. Ascorbic acid content per cell inreases with the onset of cell elongation. Fully elongated cells contain fivefold more ascorbic acid than meristematic cells. Cytophotometric analysis reveals a sharp and positive correlation (r=+0.93) between percentage increase in content of ascorbic acid per cell and corresponding increase in cell size at different phases of cell elongation. IAA treatment to the roots raises the content of ascorbic acid per cell with a parallel increase in size of cell. Involvement of ascorbic acid in IAA induced cell elongation is discussed.

Notes: Summary Crystallization of polyacrylonitrile has been carried out at different temperatures from fractionated sample, and different morphological growth features obtained are compared with those observed previously from unfractionated sample. Several new growth features like rectangular single crystals, twinned crystals, ovals and spherulites have been observed. The role of different typical growth features for the development of spherulites has been studied. It seems that the proposed growth mechanism for the development of spherulite grown either from the melt or concentrated solution is the same for different polymers. From the observed growth features of dendritic nature in different conditions, a mechanism of development of dendritic spherulite is discussed.

Notes: Summary A simple, rapid, sensitive and highly selective method for extraction-photometric determination of microamounts of vanadium(V) is described. The method is based on the formation of the VO(OAm)2-OH complex by the reaction of vanadium(V) withN-hydroxy-N-p-chlorophenyl-N'-(3-chloro-4-methylphenyl)-p-toluamidine, and its extraction into chloroform as 1∶1 adducts [VO(OAm)2OH∶L] (where HOAm=theN-hydroxyamidine and L=carboxylic acid) with various carboxylic acids. The nature of carboxylic acids has large effect in theλ max andɛ of ternary complexes. The sequestrating agents e. g. oxalic, succinic, fumaric, citric, tartraric acid have been also used as a Synergist in the extraction of vanadium(V). Apparent molar absorptivities of the extracts lie in the range of 3100–6700 l · mole−1 · cm−1. Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ti4+, Zr4+, Mo6+ and W6+ do not interfere. The method has been applied to various alloys.

Notes: Summary N-Hydroxy-N- (p- chlorophenyl)-N′-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)-p-toluamidine hydrochloride reacts with Fe3+, V5+ and Mo5+ in thiocyanate media, giving water-insoluble mixed complexes, extractable into benzene. The large differences in the analytical conditions for formation of the mixed complexes of these elements affords a simple, rapid and sensitive extraction-photometric method for determination of these elements at microgram levels. Cr3+, Mn2+, W6+, Ti4+ and Zr4+ do not interfere. The method has been applied for determination of these elements in artificial mixtures.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we will consider the effect of introducing parallel computers to solve optimisation problems. We briefly highlight four situations where most improvements are likely. We consider the possible interaction of the four classifications with the currently available parallel processing machines. A brief description of one of the parallel systems, ICL DAP, is outlined. We have implemented two parallel (SIMD) algorithms, one for local optimisation and the other for global optimisation, on the ICL DAP. Numerical results, together with the processing times, are reported.
