Notes: This study has defined five brachiopod assemblage zones within the Permian Kapp Starostin Formation of Festningen, Central West Spitsbergen. They are designated as the Horridonia timanica zone, the Waagenoconcha sp. A (Gobbett 1964) zone, the Megousia weyprechti zone, the Plerospirifer alatus zone and the Haydenella wilczeki zone in ascending order. Only the lower three zones are recognized in the same formation of Sveltihel. The first zone, which is exactly equivalent to the 'Spirifer Limestone’as well as the Vøringcn Member of the Kapp Starostin Formation, is probably Kungurian in age. The last zone, situated near the uppermost portion of the Hovtinden Member, may possibly have a brachiopod assemblage matching that of the Cyclolobus-bearing beds of the Foldvik Creek Formation in Central East Greenland. Consequently, the uppermost beds of the Kapp Starostin Formation are chronologically dated as late Permian, most probably as Dzhulfian of the Tethys Province.

Notes: Tanier spinach (Xanthosoma brasiliense, Araceae) is a common leafy vegetable in south-eastern Brazil. A cuneiform leaf blight which started at the edges of leaves and resulted in complete leaf decay has recently been observed. The causal agent was identified as Pseudomonas cichorii. This appears to be the first report of the disease.

Notes: Peruvian carrot soft rot occurs quite frequently in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, either under field conditions or after harvested roots have been stored. The etiology of the disease was investigated and the disease was found to be induced by Erwinia carotovora. This appears to be the first report of this disease.

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to shed new light on the consistent aggregation problem in input-output systems by making use of some properties of M-matrices. For example, we show that the stability of a multisectoral dynamic multiplier model is invariant under consistent aggregation, that a consistently aggregated dynamic Leontief model is relatively stable if the original system is stable, and that Gillen and Guccione's Third Proposition can be generalized to cover the case of weighted aggregation.

Notes: To investigate HLA-linked genes controlling the susceptibility and resistance to insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), HLA-DQ alleles of 45 Japanese patients with IDDM were analysed, using sequence specific oligonucleotide (SSO). DQA1*0301 and DQBI*04 were positively associated (R.R = 6.6, Pc〈0.05 and R.R. = 4.7 Pc〈0.01) and DQAI*0103 and DQBI*0104 were negatively associated (R.R. =0–2, Pc〈0.01) with IDDM. DQAI*0103 and DQB1*0104 were in strong linkage disequilibrium to encode for DQw6 molecule. Therefore, in a Japanese population, the DQw6 molecule seems to control the resistance to IDDM. To determine whether or not the DQw6 molecule itself can protect against glycosuria and insulitis in NOD mice, these animals were mated with HLA-DQw6 transgenic-C57BL/6 mice (DQw6-B6) and the F1 progeny expressing the DQw6 molecule were backcrossed with NOD mice. Eighty-five female backcross progenies were classified into four groups, according to the MHC classII phenotype; I-Anod/I-Anod DQw6(-), I-Anod/I-Anod DQw6(+), I-Anod/I-Ab DQw6(-) and I-Anod/I-Ab DQw6(+). At the age of 16 weeks, 9.1% of the DQw6(-) I-Ab(-) mice had a glycosuria whereas none of the DQw6(+) I-Ab(-) mice had a glycosuria. At the age of 30 weeks 13.6% of the DQw6(-) I-Ab(-) mice had a glycosuria and 7.7% of the DQw6(+) I-Ab(-) mice had a glycosuria. Histological examinations of the pancreas were performed in the 30 week old mice or after the development of glycosuria. About 50% of I-Ab(-) mice developed insulitis, regardless of the expression of the DQw6 molecule. Thus, the DQw6 molecule seemed to delay the onset of glycosuria but did not protect against glycosuria and insulitis in the NOD mice despite a functional expression.

Notes: Two different types of T cell clones which recognize Mlsb haplotype gene products were established by using mice congenic at the Mls locus. The antigens defined by these T cells showed differences not only in strain distribution but also in the restriction element for antigen recognition by T cells (i.e. Kd or Dd). The antigens appear to be expressed on various types of lymphocytes.

Notes: Abstract Different LPS was shown to have a relatively different proportion of O-specific chain-less (R-form) LPS by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) with sodium deoxycholate (DOC). By using DOC-PAGE, S-form LPS having O-chain with approximately 11 repeating units on average (S-Fr) and O-chain-less LPS (R-Fr) were separated from Escherichia coli UKT-B S-form LPS. Significantly stronger pyrogenicity was observed in R-Fr than in S-Fr when measured on the weight basis. Similar result was observed in Limulus test. Comparing biological activities of different S-form LPS, attention should be given to the amounts of co-existing R-form LPS.

Notes: Abstract The glutamine synthetase (GS) gene from Bacillus subtilis PCI 219 was cloned in Escherichia coli using the vector pBR329. A plasmid, pSGS2, was isolated from a glnA+ transformant and the cloned GS gene was found to be located in a 3.6 kb DNA fragment. The nucleotide sequence of a 1.8 kb segment encoding the GS was determined. This segment showed an open reading frame which would encode a polypeptide of 444 amino acids. The amino acid sequence of this GS gene product has higher homology with that of the Clostridium acetobutylicum GS than that of the E. coli GS.

Notes: The mechanism of thermal degradation of inosine 5′-monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine (GMP) was investigated kinetically in aqueous solution as a function of pH and temperature. The degradation of IMP and GMP followed first order kinetics. The rate constants were considerably affected by pH and temperature. The half-life times at 100°C were: IMP, 8.7 hr (pH 4.0), 13.1 hr (pH 7.0), 46.2 hr (pH 9.0); GMP, 6.4 hr (pH 4.0), 8.2 hr (pH 7.0), 38.5 hr (pH 9.0). These times were shortened to about one-third by raising the temperature 10°C. The predominant degradation products were nucleosides and phosphoric acid, indicating that the main reaction of the thermal degradation was the hydrolysis of the phosphoric ester bond in the nucleotides.
