Notes: The interaction of hydrogen transfer in a double minimum potential with a condensed phase environment is studied. For a symmetric double minimum system, the tunneling motion in the vibrational ground state is retarded efficiently by fluctuation as well as by rearrangement of the lattice consisting of harmonic oscillators. Environmental displacements with large inertia cause dynamic asymmetry by failing to cooperate with the transfer motion and favor a thermally activated process even at low temperatures. To describe such processes, an effective Hamiltonian is derived, which consists of a leading term referring to a one-dimensional transfer motion along an asymmetric potential profile and of a random perturbation term linear in the transfer coordinate. The power spectral density is derived for the perturbation given as a superposition of the time-dependent quantum mechanical expectation values of the vibrational displacements in the environment. A master equation treatment is proposed to describe the kinetic properties and is applied to a model for benzoic acid dimers in the crystalline state. The model reproduces the full temperature dependence of the observed NMR T1 data for (C6H5COOH)2 and (C6H5COOD)2 with plausible parameters and relates the temperature-dependent apparent activation energy to the energy level scheme of the transfer motion.

Notes: We have investigated the activation by post-deposition annealing of Zn and Cd acceptors incorporated in InP during epitaxial growth using metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Growth was carried out at 20 mbar and atmospheric pressure for Zn- and Cd-doped samples, respectively, using TMI, PH3, DEZn, and DMCd as sources. Post-epitaxial annealing in a N2 atmosphere at temperatures in the range of 370–470 °C leads to complete activation of the acceptors. This process is strongly temperature dependent and a distinct effect of a GaInAs overlayer was observed. The activation energy is the same for Zn- and Cd-doped samples. It is suggested that the diffusion of vacancies plays a determining role in activating the dopant.

Notes: This paper is concerned with the characteristics of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at modulation-doped GaInAs/InP and GaInAsP/InP heterojunctions and GaInAs/InP single-quantum-well structures grown by low-pressure metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy (LP-MOVPE) at 20 hPa. Using trimethyl-In, trimethyl-Ga, AsH3, and PH3 as source materials, this process permits the deposition of very uniform films with abrupt interfaces and doping profiles. We give the first detailed analysis of modulation-doped structures by classical Hall effect, Shubnikov–de Haas, and quantum Hall-effect measurements. Study of the scattering mechanisms of the 2DEG in modulation-doped GaInAs/InP and GaInAsP/InP structures reveals a small interface roughness and a low impurity content at the interfaces. Electron mobilities at 4.2 K up to 189 000 cm2/V s for a GaInAs/InP and 72 000 cm2/V s for a GaInAsP/InP heterojunction as well as values as high as 170 000 cm2/V s for a GaInAs/InP quantum well structure demonstrate the excellent control of the growth process and the quality of the material attainable by LP-MOVPE.

Notes: Schrödinger's equation for two-body scattering is analyzed in the tunneling range of energy for arbitrary, analytic potentials with one barrier. An exact scattering representation is given which furnishes a rigorous and efficient basis for the determination of all the eigenvalues of very long life and the associated linewidths and resonant responses. The approach is direct and simple enough to avoid computation or estimation of wave functions and asymptotic or perturbation expansions.

Notes: The ordinary mode damping near the electron-cyclotron frequency is investigated using the relativistic dispersion relation. It is shown that the Doppler splitting of the absorption spectrum claimed by Arunasalam et al. [Phys. Rev. A 36, 3909 (1987); 37, 2063 (1988)] is an erroneous result obtained from an oversimplified dispersion relation and assuming an infinite speed of light in the resonance condition.

Notes: The nonlinear equations governing inviscid water waves close to shore over beaches of small slope are discussed to elucidate their scope, limitations, and ramifications. Their decisive feature is a singularity of the differential equations themselves, and to open the way for analysis, an associated problem is formulated in terms of singular wave equations. The emphasis is on the identification of the questions of oceanographical relevance that can be asked and the ways in which they can be posed to construct the basis for a correct, mathematical analysis [R. E. Meyer, Adv. Appl. Math. (in press)] and for its application to shoaling predictions [R. E. Meyer, Phys. Fluids 29, XXX (1986)].

Notes: The power dependence of the wave damping in a tokamak plasma for arbitrary direction of propagation, mode of polarization, and wave frequency is investigated. Using a 2-D Fokker–Planck code, it is shown that the wave damping increases or decreases with the rf power depending on the velocity range of the absorbing electrons.

Notes: The model of gravitational surface waves on beaches of small slope formulated in Part I [Phys. Fluids 29, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1986)] and its mathematical theory [R. E. Meyer, Adv. Appl. Math. (in press)] are used to show how an incident-wave amplitude can be defined so that a bound on it guarantees solutions which respect the assumptions of the model everywhere and forever. The structure of those solutions "far'' from shore is then compared with that predicted "near'' shore by the classical, linear theory [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 1 (1948)] to remove the indeterminacies of both theories and to develop a unified theory which describes the whole shoaling process for unbroken waves of arbitrary time-dependence on inviscid water. These results indicate that the beach theory [Waves on Beaches (Academic, New York, 1972), p. 357 and Phys. Fluids 29, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1986)] captures and elucidates the basic singularity structure underlying the shore behavior of gravitational surface waves.

Notes: The combined effects of the dc electric field and electron-cyclotron wave absorption in tokamak plasmas are investigated. The case of the ordinary mode for nearly normal propagation from the low magnetic field side is studied by a two-dimensional Fokker–Planck code. It is found that the small fraction of the wave energy that goes into the superthermal electrons enhances the effect of the continuous pushing of the tokamak electric field.
