Notes: Schrödinger's equation for two-body scattering is analyzed in the tunneling range of energy for arbitrary, analytic potentials with one barrier. An exact scattering representation is given which furnishes a rigorous and efficient basis for the determination of all the eigenvalues of very long life and the associated linewidths and resonant responses. The approach is direct and simple enough to avoid computation or estimation of wave functions and asymptotic or perturbation expansions.

Notes: The objective of this paper is to study weakly nonlinear waves on a viscous magnetic fluid flow down an inclined plane under the influence of gravity and a constant magnetic field parallel to the plane. An approximate evolution equation is derived and a critical Reynolds number for the stability of three-dimensional long waves obtained. It is found that the component of the applied magnetic field aligned with the flow has a stabilizing effect but that the transverse component, however, has a destabilizing effect on the long waves. Stability regions of two-dimensional long waves at the critical Reynolds number and numerical results for the solution of a nonlinear ill-posed problem are presented. Several progressive-wave solutions are also given.

Notes: The nonlinear equations governing inviscid water waves close to shore over beaches of small slope are discussed to elucidate their scope, limitations, and ramifications. Their decisive feature is a singularity of the differential equations themselves, and to open the way for analysis, an associated problem is formulated in terms of singular wave equations. The emphasis is on the identification of the questions of oceanographical relevance that can be asked and the ways in which they can be posed to construct the basis for a correct, mathematical analysis [R. E. Meyer, Adv. Appl. Math. (in press)] and for its application to shoaling predictions [R. E. Meyer, Phys. Fluids 29, XXX (1986)].

Notes: The model of gravitational surface waves on beaches of small slope formulated in Part I [Phys. Fluids 29, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1986)] and its mathematical theory [R. E. Meyer, Adv. Appl. Math. (in press)] are used to show how an incident-wave amplitude can be defined so that a bound on it guarantees solutions which respect the assumptions of the model everywhere and forever. The structure of those solutions "far'' from shore is then compared with that predicted "near'' shore by the classical, linear theory [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 1 (1948)] to remove the indeterminacies of both theories and to develop a unified theory which describes the whole shoaling process for unbroken waves of arbitrary time-dependence on inviscid water. These results indicate that the beach theory [Waves on Beaches (Academic, New York, 1972), p. 357 and Phys. Fluids 29, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1986)] captures and elucidates the basic singularity structure underlying the shore behavior of gravitational surface waves.

Notes: Abstract Ho & Meyer [1] have sketched an argument for arriving at asymptotic properties of solutions of a pair of non-linear conservation laws with floating, shocktype boundary condition of importance in gas dynamics and oceanography. To clarify the mathematical basis of their method of inequalities, a proof of their main asymptotic results is given here. It depends on substantially weakened hypotheses.

Notes: Summary Surface waves trapped over naturally gentle seabed topographies near coasts may decay in time due to energy absorption at the shore. The decay rate is computed in terms of the shore reflection coefficient for round islands and for seabed depth varying only normally to a straight beach, as in laboratory channels. This decay rate is liable to be considerably larger than that due to energy leakage to the open sea, but is still relatively small, since it is proportional to (frequency)-1. The resonant response of such modes may therefore still be important.
