    Notizen: High quality Mn-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.75 Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 crystal was grown and its two-wave mixing and self-pumped phase conjugation properties were studied in detail. The two-wave coupling gain is as high as 37.60 cm−1 and the phase conjugation reflectivity is higher than 40%. It is shown that Mn dopants effectively increase photorefractive property of the crystal, and the possible mechanism is analyzed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have demonstrated a method to directly pattern organic light-emitting structures with a submicron resolution without any degradation in optical properties. Both small molecules and polymer-based light-emitting structures were patterned by nanoimprint at 150 °C in a vacuum. The comparison of luminescence efficiency before and after patterning shows that nanoimprint did not cause degradation in the optical property of the materials. Nanoimprint offers a low-cost, high-throughput, high-resolution patterning technique that opens a way for realizing novel photonic devices based on organic light-emitting materials. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Upon the cessation of exponential growth, Bacillus subtilis enters a transition phase leading to either sporulation or a non-sporulating stationary phase. During this transition period, cells secrete degradative enzymes, become competent for DNA transformation, are motile and acquire resistance to oxidative killing. We now report that mrgA, originally identified as a gene repressed by metal ions, encodes a member of the Dps/PexB family of general stress proteins. Like Escherichia coli Dps(PexB), MrgA forms highly stable, multimeric protein-DNA complexes which accumulate in stationary-phase cells and protect against oxidative killing. MrgA is part of an inducible oxidative stress response in B. subtilis: mrgA is induced by hydrogen peroxide, and a strain lacking MrgA displays increased sensitivity to oxidative killing. In addition, a hydrogen peroxide-resistant mutant, which constitutively overproduces catalase and alkyl hydroperoxide reductase, also overproduces MrgA. These results indicate a complex interplay between metal ions and the expression of the B. subtilis oxidative stress response.

    Notizen: Summary A new type of coordination polyurethane was prepared by incorporating the transition metal ions into the pyridine containing thermoplastic polyurethane films. Then the metal ions dispersed in the polyurethane matrix were reduced by controlling the exposure of the metal sites to NaBH4 under mild condition. The reduction of the polyurethane metal complex films resulted in the production of amorphous ultrafine metal powders. The size of these powders was controlled by the content of the metal ions and the polarity of the polymer matrix. A polar polymer backbone and lower metal ion concentration favored to achieve a smaller particle. It was also found that the polymer chains prohibited the excessive aggregation of the metal atoms and have protective effect on the final metal powders.

    Notizen: Summary Ultrafine copper particles with diameters in the range of nanometer scale have been prepared in a polymer matrix, using ionic aggregates in Cu2+-random poly(itaconic acid-co-acrylic acid) complex precursor films as “microreactors” of controllable size.The morphology and formation of metallic copper particles were studied by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Results from the measurements indicate the copper ions were transformed into nanocrystalline by in situ chemical reduction. It was also found that the polymer chains prohibited the excessive aggregation of the metal atoms and have protective effect on the ultrafine copper particles.

    Notizen: d -Glucan contents and (1→3),(1→4)-β-d-glucan hydrolase activity increased in the faster phase of coleoptile growth, then declined under both light and dark conditions. The relative glucan content in the cell wall showed a good correlation with the increment of coleoptile length. Strong correlations were also observed among the increment of coleoptile length, the decrease in the level of the glucans, and the relative activity of the glucanase in the cell wall of light- and dark-grown coleoptiles except for those values in the early stage of coleoptile growth, supporting a hypothesis that the turnover of the glucans is one of the important factors which regulate rice coleoptile growth. The levels of the glucans and the glucanase activity were always lower in the cell wall of coleoptiles grown in the light than those in darkness during the experimental period. These results suggest that light irradiation inhibits both the synthesis and the breakdown of the glucans, causing a decrease in the capacity of the cell wall to extend, thereby inducing growth suppression in rice coleoptiles.

    Notizen: Abstract The synthesis of the title matrix-mediated nanocomposite was performed in both poly(4-vinylpyridine) homopolymer and vinylstyrene-4-vinylpyridine copolymers. NH2–NH2 was used as the reducing agent to prepare the polymer-supported metallic particles which were later converted into fine oxide powders by oxidation. The structure and morphology of the products were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy as well as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis and magnetic measurements. The wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns contained reflections that could be assigned to Fe3O4 particles while no reflections were observed that correspond to ultrafine iron powders. The magnetization behaviour of the nanocomposite was determined by the degree of loading of Fe in the polymer matrix.

    Notizen: A series of polyurethane organometallic complexes based on novel diols, bis[N-[[2-hydroxyphenyl]methylene]hydroxylethyleneamino]-copper(II) (DBSICu), were synthesized successfully. The products are elastomeric glassy materials or powders. Similar to other polyurethane elastomers, these coordination block copolymers exhibit 2-phase microstructure and thermoplastic properties. It is interesting to note that some of these polyurethanes show a Schlieren pattern under the polarizing optical microscope. The liquid crystalline properties of DBSICu and the coordination polymers are studied in detail in this study. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: In this study, a series of polyether-ester ionomers was prepared by neutralizing the carboxylic acid groups in 1 : 1 copolymers of benzenetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and poly(tetramethylene oxide) or poly(ethylene oxide) glycol. The base polymers were in a liquid state while the ionomers were in solid state and a separate ionic phase was formed. The local structure and the morphology of the ionomers were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and small-angle x-ray scattering as well as extended x-ray absorption fine structure. Clearly, the geometric structure of the ionic sites varied with the nature of the metal ions and the morphology of the ionomers was determined by the microstructure of the ion aggregates. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
