    Description: In recent years, Chinese students have enjoyed a prominent presence in the Italian higher education system. A recent survey conducted by Uni-Italia shows that Chinese students account for 24% of non-EU students in Italian universities. When the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) erupted in Italy at the beginning of 2020, panic spread quickly through social media; numerous fears, generated by the tide of information available online, permeated the Chinese university student community in Italy. This chapter first analyses the problems encountered by Chinese university students in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then introduces the artistic and cultural response from within that same community. Such forms of creative response also shine light, more generally, on a growing Anti-Asian sentiment in Italy. Despite the enormous challenges posed by COVID-19, Chinese university students in Italy have developed a mode of communication that builds bridges between different cultures— quite different from “mass media” or “major news outlets”—because it is personal, honest, and intimate.

    Notes: Differentiation between natural and anthropogenic sources of ground-water contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons is necessary in areas where natural hydrocarbons may be present in the subsurface. Because of the similarity in composition between natural and refined petroleum, the use of statistical techniques to discern trends is required. In this study, both multivariate plotting techniques and principal component analysis were used to investigate the origin of hydrocarbons from a variety of study sites. Ground-water and gas samples were collected from the Niagara Falls area and from three gasoline stations where leaking underground storage tanks had been found. Although soil gas surveys are used to indicate the presence of hydrocarbons, they were not useful in differentiating between natural and anthropogenic sources of contamination in ground water. Propane and pentene were found to be the most useful chemical parameters in discriminating between the natural and anthropogenic sources. These chemicals are not usually measured in investigations of ground-water contamination, yet analysis can be conducted by most environmental laboratories using conventional methods.

    Notes: The concept of root contact hypothesizes that the absorbing roots grown in sandy soil are only partially effective in water uptake. Co-ordination of water supply and demand in the plant requires that the capacity for water uptake from the soil should correspond to an operational rate of water loss from the leaves. To examine how the plant hydraulic system responds to variations in soil texture or evaporative demand through long-term acclimation, an experiment was carried on cotton plants (Gossypium herbaceum L.), where three grades of soil texture and three grades of evaporative demand were applied for the whole life cycle of the plants. Plants were harvested 50 and 90 d (fully grown) after sowing and root length and leaf area measured. At 90 d hydraulic conductance was measured as the ratio of sap flow (measured with sap flow sensors or gravimetrically) and water potential. Results showed that for plants grown at the same evaporative demand, those in sandy soil, where root-specific hydraulic conductance was low, developed more absorbing roots than those grown in heavy-textured soil, where root specific conductance was high. This resulted in the same leaf specific hydraulic conductance (1.8 × 10−4 kg s−1 Mpa−1 m−2) for all three soils. For plants grown in the same sandy soil, those subjected to strong evaporative demand developed more absorbing roots and higher leaf-specific hydraulic conductance than those grown under mild evaporative demand. It is concluded that when soil texture or atmospheric evaporative demand varies, plants co-ordinate their capacities for liquid phase and vapour phase water transport through long-term acclimation of the hydraulic system, or plastic morphological adaptation of the root/leaf ratio.

    Notes: Sinorhizobium meliloti DctD is an activator of σ54-RNA polymerase holoenzyme and member of the AAA+ superfamily of ATPases. DctD uses energy released from ATP hydrolysis to stimulate the isomerization of a closed promoter complex to an open complex. DctD binds to upstream activation sequences (UAS) and contacts the closed complex through DNA looping to activate transcription, but the UAS is not essential for activation if DctD is expressed at higher than normal levels. Introduction of specific substitutions within or near the conserved ESELFG motif in the C3 region of a truncated, constitutively active form of DctD produced several mutant forms of the protein that had increased dependence on the UAS for activation. Removing the DNA-binding domain from one UAS-dependent mutant and from one activation-deficient mutant significantly increased transcriptional activation, indicating that the DNA-binding domain interfered with the activities of these mutant proteins. A UAS-dependent mutant with a P315L substitution in the C6 region was identified from a genetic screen. Alanine scanning mutagenesis of conserved amino acid residues around Pro-315 produced two additional UAS-dependent mutants as well as several mutants that failed to activate transcription but retained ATPase activity. In contrast to the two mutant proteins with substitutions in the C3 region, removal of the DNA-binding domain from the mutant proteins with substitutions in the C6 region did not stimulate their activity. The residues in the C6 region that were altered are in a probable hinge region between the α/β and α-helical subdomains of the AAA+ domain. The α-helical subdomain contains the sensor II helix that has been implicated in other AAA+ proteins as sensing changes in the nucleotide during the hydrolysis cycle. Substitutions in the hinge region may have abolished nucleotide sensing by interfering with subdomain interactions, altering the relative orientation of the sensor II helix or interfering with oligomerization of the protein.

    Notes: With the rapid development of the subgrade or the foundation over recent years in China, there is a growing tendency for tall building to orient its directions to the more numbers of plies, much higher and more complex in plane layout. Moreover, some buildings adopt tube structure or bundled tube structure and so on to diversified development. The changing-rigidity of ground or foundation has obvious effects on superstructure when the buildings act on much higher and huge type. Therefore, in view of this, taking the bundled-tube structure of super high building for example in the paper, the method, equal the bundled tube structure of super high building and its foundation to stiffening-thin wall-combination, is adopted, then based on the three-dimensional model, the rigidity of subgrade and foundation’s effect on superstructure are given by calculation with semi-analysis. The calculated result indicated that there exist remarkable influence on sideway of the top end, the sideway between layers, the warp of the tube and the stresses between the subgrade and the bottom of the foundation

    Notes: A series of polyurethane organometallic complexes based on novel diols, bis[N-[[2-hydroxyphenyl]methylene]hydroxylethyleneamino]-copper(II) (DBSICu), were synthesized successfully. The products are elastomeric glassy materials or powders. Similar to other polyurethane elastomers, these coordination block copolymers exhibit 2-phase microstructure and thermoplastic properties. It is interesting to note that some of these polyurethanes show a Schlieren pattern under the polarizing optical microscope. The liquid crystalline properties of DBSICu and the coordination polymers are studied in detail in this study. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
