Beschreibung: Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM) III,a follow-on to the successful POAM II, is a spaceborne experiment designedto measure the vertical profiles of ozone, water vapor, nitrogen dioxide,and aerosol extinction in the polar stratosphere and upper troposphere witha vertical resolution of 1-2 km. Measurements are made by the solaroccultation technique. POAM III, now in polar orbit aboard the SPOT 4 satellite,is providing data on north- and south-polar ozone phenomena, including the south-polar ozone hole, and on the spatial and temporal variability of stratosphericaerosols, polar stratospheric clouds, and polar mesospheric clouds.Differences between POAM III and POAM II instruments are described.First validation of POAM III products by comparison with HalogenOccultation Experiment and ozonesonde data are presented.

Notizen: An investigation is made of the effects of nongyrotropic equilibrium distributions in the phase angle of p⊥ on the stability properties of a relativistic electron beam propagating along and gyrating about an applied uniform magnetic field. Perturbations are assumed to vary spatially only in the direction of the applied magnetic field, so that generated electromagnetic and longitudinal electric fields propagate parallel to the applied field. The two equilibrium distributions considered are the time-dependent distribution f0(p⊥,pz,ξ) with ξ=φ−Ωct/γ and the axial-dependent distribution f0(p⊥,pz,ζ) with ζ=φ−mΩcz/pz. A Vlasov-Maxwell analysis leads to integral equations relating the field Fourier components. These equations reduce to algebraic equations when no spread in γ is present in the time-dependent equilibrium distribution and when no spread in pz is present in the axial-dependent distribution. Numerical computations for these special cases show that a rich variety of stability properties are obtained by changing the distributions in ξ and ζ. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We demonstrate single electron charging in fully controllable nanoscale quantum devices at temperatures above 4 K. Hitherto, single electron devices operating at "high'' temperatures have been two-terminal, having no control electrode, whereas fully tunable structures such as quantum dots have only shown charging effects at temperatures of 4 K or less. We have fabricated ultrasmall quantum dots on modulation doped heterostructures where the two-dimensional electron gas is less than 30 nm from the surface. Dots with lithographic diameter 150 nm show Coulomb oscillations up to temperatures of 7 K. Higher temperature operation allows potential applications to be considered without the need, for example, of a dilution fridge. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present the first results using a new technique that combines femtosecond pump–probe methods with energy- and angle-resolved photoelectron–photoion coincidence imaging. The dominant dissociative multiphoton ionization (DMI) pathway for NO2 at 375.3 nm is identified as three-photon excitation to a repulsive potential surface correlating to NO(C 2Π)+O(3P) followed by one-photon ionization to NO+(X 1Σ+). Dissociation along this surface is followed on a femtosecond timescale. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fungal ribotoxins, such as mitogillin and the related Aspergillus toxins restrictocin and α-sarcin, are highly specific ribonucleases, which inactivate the ribosome enzymatically by cleaving the eukaryotic 28S RNA of the large ribosomal subunit at a single phosphodiester bond. The site of cleavage occurs between G4325 and A4326, which are present in a 14-base sequence (the α-sarcin loop) conserved among the large subunit rRNAs of all living species. The amino acid residues involved in the cytotoxic activities of mitogillin were investigated by introducing point mutations using hydroxylamine into a recombinant Met-mature mitogillin (mitogillin with a Met codon at the N-terminus and no leader sequence) gene constructed from an Aspergillus fumigatus cDNA clone. These constructs were cloned into a yeast expression vector under the control of the GAL1 promoter and transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Upon induction of mitogillin expression, surviving transformants revealed that substitutions of certain amino acid residues on mitogillin abolished its cytotoxicity. Non-toxic mutant genes were cloned into an Escherichia coli expression vector, the proteins overexpressed and purified to homogeneity and their activities examined by in vitro ribonucleolytic assays. These studies identified the His-49Tyr, Glu-95Lys, Arg-120Lys and His-136Tyr mutations to have a profound impact on the ribonucleolytic activities of mitogillin. We conclude that these residues are key components of the active site contributing to the catalytic activities of mitogillin.

Notizen: A simple model of gross solids' movement in sewers is proposed, based upon the results of studies of part-full pipe flow in two laboratory installations, under steady and unsteady flow conditions. The model covers advection and deposition, and is intended as one component in a comprehensive model of the behaviour of gross solids in sewers. Such a model is needed because gross solids are not included in the currently available sewer-flow quality models, even though they can cause pollution which is of particular concern to the publicThe paper describes the laboratory studies and their results. It sets out the principles of the proposed model and explains why these differ from existing models of dissolved and fine suspended pollutants.

Notizen: The effect of reduced doses of propiconazole (Tilt) and different initial inoculation levels on leek rust caused by Puccinia allii was quantified by three parameters: (i) rate of plant-to-plant spread (b), (ii) the time taken for 50% plant infection (m) and, (iii) rate of appearance of new pustules. All propiconazole doses tested reduced values for b compared with an unsprayed treatment but lower doses had little effect on new pustule appearance. Although b values were different for the same propiconazole dose at two field sites with different epidemics, values compared with the unsprayed treatments were similar. Fungicide efficacy was therefore measured independently of disease level in the field. The parameter b for rust spread was also directly related to marketable yield at harvest. Initial rust incidence levels of 〈 0.1% infected plants reduced b compared with higher levels (0.5–5%). This suggests that rust spread occurs at a maximum rate unless incidence is extremely low. Reduced doses of propiconazole also suppressed spore germination of P. allii and the appearance of rust pustules in inoculated plants in the glasshouse. The value of the parameters identified is discussed in relation to leek rust control, epidemiology and the effect of weather.
