    Notes: A computer model was developed to evaluate the impact of various technologies for water conservation in domestic households, in terms of the Impact on the operation of downstream infrastructure. These technologies, which include (a) low-flush toilets, (b) greywater re-use, and (c) re-use of rainwater from roof runoff for toilet flushing, were compared using indicators of sustainability to measure water consumption, sewerage-system operational performance and process treatment efficiency. The results demonstrated that rainwater re-use is potentially the most sustainable strategy in terms of the benefits associated with water conservation and reduction in sewage discharges from combined-sewer overflows (CSOs). The benefits were observed without the problems associated with increased sedimentation in sewers during dry weather, associated with other water-conservation strategies such as reduced-flush toilets, greywater re-use and the resultant increase in pollutants from CSOs during wet weather.

    Notes: This paper discusses the potential threat to health associated with the microbial contamination of grey-water. Although it has been shown that greywater may contain large numbers of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, the incidence of disease is dependent upon more than just the concentration of organisms. Other factors include the degree of exposure and the health and age of affected individuals. Proposed guidelines for the re-use of greywater focus upon faecal coliform contamination and suggest limits based upon the end use of recycled water.The paper (a) proposes modifications to the guidelines to better represent the delicate balance between protection of public health and the levels of risk posed by greywater re-use within the context of everyday human activity, and (b) attempts to identify areas where there is either an expectation for responsibility or a personal acceptance of responsibility with regard to public or personal health.

    Notes: Surface-water flooding occurs frequently in low-income urban settlements of developing countries, with impacts on public health and the local economy. In many locations, drainage systems are neither appropriate nor sustainable. A computer model of a small surface-water drainage catchment has been developed within a slum improvement programme in Indore, India. The model was calibrated and verified against flow-survey data, and was used to study the effects on performance of maintenance (as reflected in solids build-up in pipes) and site grading. The results confirm the critical importance of maintenance in drainage performance and the need for construction engineers to consider drainage carefully before changing site-grading plans. The results also suggest some general trends in drainage performance during floods.

    Notes: A systems approach is used to model the urban water and wastewater system. Scenarios are developed for the implementation of a range of water demand management measures, including (a) leakage reduction, (b) the increasing use of water metering, (c) the replacement of standard WCs by low-flow WCs, and (d) the introduction of greywater recycling systems. These measures are assessed according to the water saving, cost per unit of water saved, and other indicators of the relative contribution to the sustainability of the system. Preliminary assessments of selected environmental costs and benefits are also included.

    Notes: Water-demand management is a pro-active approach to water conservation, which considers water-consumption ‘needs’as ‘demands’rather than requirements. Taking into account a variety of engineering strategies to reduce urban water consumption, this research discusses the use of a tool for developing a master plan for site-specific implementation. The tool links the characteristics of urban areas (engineering, economic and social) with the applicability of particular water-demand management strategies within a fuzzy logic framework, to provide spatially-sensitive decision support - both at a strategic and an application level. The initial results, under various user-defined scenarios, are presented and discussed. It is argued that decision-support tools are beneficial in assisting the water industry to move towards a more pro-active approach to urban water management, similar to the approach which has already been adopted by the Telecommunication and Energy sector.

    Notes: Aspects of the hydraulic performance of an in-sewer vortex regulator have been studied. These devices are increasingly used in stormwater management schemes, but their characteristics under a variety of prototypical situations have not been widely disseminated. The study used a full-size laboratory mockup of a section of sewer and associated manhole with facilities for measuring discharges of up to 60 1/s. The performance of a typical vortex flow regulator was investigated under both steady and unsteady flow conditions. The steady head-discharge relationship revealed the expected ‘kick back’region (during rising head); however, this was less pronounced during falling head. Under unsteady conditions, vortex initiation was affected and a hysteresis effect was noted. The influence of downstream surcharge was significant at lower upstream heads. Theoretical comparison showed that to obtain equivalent performance, an orifice of 62% of the diameter of the vortex regulator would be required, and 25% savings in storage could be made.
