Description: Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM) III,a follow-on to the successful POAM II, is a spaceborne experiment designedto measure the vertical profiles of ozone, water vapor, nitrogen dioxide, and aerosol extinction in the polar stratosphere and upper troposphere witha vertical resolution of 1-2 km. Measurements are made by the solaroccultation technique. POAM III, now in polar orbit aboard the SPOT 4 satellite,is providing data on north- and south-polar ozone phenomena, including the south-polar ozone hole, and on the spatial and temporal variability of stratosphericaerosols, polar stratospheric clouds, and polar mesospheric clouds.Differences between POAM III and POAM II instruments are described.First validation of POAM III products by comparison with HalogenOccultation Experiment and ozonesonde data are presented.

Notes: Abstract The combination of thermogravimetry, microcalorimetry and infrared spectroscopy studies of pyridine adsorption has been used to characterize the acidity of a ZSM-5 catalyst. The majority of the acid sites are Brønsted acid centers associated with framework Al species, with heats of pyridine adsorption equal to 140 kJ/mol. Non-framework Al species in the zeolite sample of this study eliminate an approximately equal number of Brønsted acid sites. These nonframework Al species also produce strong Lewis acid sites with pyridine adsorption heats greater than 140 kJ/mol, as well as weak adsorption sites (e.g., weak Bransted acid sites or hydrogen bonding sites) with heats equal to 90–140 kJ/mol.

Notes: Abstract The acidity characteristics of H-ZSM-5, H-Mordenite and H-Y zeolite have been studied by microcalorimetric and gravimetric measurements of pyridine adsorption. H-ZSM-5 and H-Mordenite have Brønsted acid sites of primarily homogenous strength, with H-Mordenite having the stronger sites, whereas H-Y zeolite had Brønsted sites of varying strength. The effects of Na exchange level in H-Y zeolite and high temperature calcination for H-Mordenite have also been examined.

Notes: Abstract Alkaline fading of bromophenol blue was chosen for the investigation of the effect of heating rate on the activation energies derived from the dynamic kinetic method. Freeman and Carroll's treatment was adopted to compute the activation energies from experimental data taken with three heating rates: namely 1°, 0.5° and 0.25°/min. It was found that the activation energy increases as the heating rate decreases. This is attributed to the non-equilibrium conditions. By extrapolating to zero heating rate, the activation energy obtained is comparable to that obtained via classical isothermal kinetics.
