    Notes: Abstract. This paper describes the design and implementation of a practical parallel algorithm for Delaunay triangulation that works well on general distributions. Although there have been many theoretical parallel algorithms for the problem, and some implementations based on bucketing that work well for uniform distributions, there has been little work on implementations for general distributions. We use the well known reduction of 2D Delaunay triangulation to find the 3D convex hull of points on a paraboloid. Based on this reduction we developed a variant of the Edelsbrunner and Shi 3D convex hull algorithm, specialized for the case when the point set lies on a paraboloid. This simplification reduces the work required by the algorithm (number of operations) from O(n log 2 n) to O(n log n) . The depth (parallel time) is O( log 3 n) on a CREW PRAM. The algorithm is simpler than previous O(n log n) work parallel algorithms leading to smaller constants. Initial experiments using a variety of distributions showed that our parallel algorithm was within a factor of 2 in work from the best sequential algorithm. Based on these promising results, the algorithm was implemented using C and an MPI-based toolkit. Compared with previous work, the resulting implementation achieves significantly better speedups over good sequential code, does not assume a uniform distribution of points, and is widely portable due to its use of MPI as a communication mechanism. Results are presented for the IBM SP2, Cray T3D, SGI Power Challenge, and DEC AlphaCluster.

    Notes: Abstract. In this paper a systematic method for the design of efficient parallel algorithms for the dynamic evaluation of computation trees and/or expressions is presented. This method involves the use of uniform closure properties of certain classes of unary functions. Using this method, optimal parallel algorithms are given for many computation tree problems which are important in parallel algebraic and numerical computation, and parallel code generation on exclusive read and exclusive write parallel random access machines. Our algorithmic result is complemented by a P-complete tree problem.

    Notes: Abstract The evolution of the domain structure in LiNbO3 with polarization switching in an electric field is investigated experimentally. Special attention is given to the formation processes of a regular domain applicable to nonlinear optical devices. A new method based on the spontaneous backswitching effect is proposed for creating a regular structure with a period of 2.6 µm in LiNbO3 with a thickness of 0.5 mm.

    Notes: Characteristics of marrow lipids in bones from three different anatomical locations (cervical, lumbar, femur) in steers and cows on low energy (range) or high energy (feedlot) diets are reported. Cervical marrow contained the least and femur marrow the most total lipid and triglycerides (TG) were the major type of lipid present in all marrows. Phosphatidyl choline was the major PL present in all marrows. The predominant fatty acids were 16:0, 18:0 and cis 18:1. There were no consistent effects due to anatomical location of bone, diet or sex upon any of the acids measured. TG structures were similar in all marrows and the fatty acid composition of TG from steer marrow resembled that of steer intramuscular TG.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to quantify nucleic acids in bone marrow and to determine if nucleic acid levels in mechanically deboned meat (MDM) which contains marrow are high enough to be nutritionally hazardous. Bone marrow from cervical and lumbar vertebrae, MDM and longissimus muscle samples were analyzed for DNA and RNA. Nucleic acid concentrations in marrow were influenced by class of animal and by anatomical location of bones. Marrow, MDM and muscle averaged 20.3, 7.6, and 1.4 mg DNA/g, and 1.9, 0.7 and 0.4 mg RNA/g respectively, indicating that increased levels of marrow in MDM would increase nucleic acid content. Nevertheless, processed meat is limited to 20% of the meat block as MDM. At this level processed meats would contain moderate amounts of nucleic acids which would not be substantially greater than levels already found in processed meat.

    Notes: Abstract Much of the recent rapid progress in large-scale genomic sequencing has been driven by the dramatic improvements both in the area of biological protocols and in the availability of improved laboratory instrumentation and automation platforms. We discuss recent developments in the area of bioinstrumentation that are contributing to the current revolution in genetic analysis. Examples of systems for laboratory automation are described together with specific single-purpose instruments. Emphasis is placed on those tools that are contributing significantly to the scale-up of genomic mapping and sequencing efforts. In addition, we present a selection of more advanced measurement techniques and instrumentation developments that are likely to contribute significantly to future advances in sequencing and genome analysis.

    Notes: The temporal evolution of Kármán vortex shedding patterns in the wake of a cylinder placed at right angles to a uniform flow is studied for Reynolds numbers (based on cylinder diameter) between 80 and 140. Focusing on the dynamics of the vortex shedding phase in the wake planview (the plane spanned by the free-stream direction and the cylinder axis) we study experimentally and model the response of shedding patterns to time-dependent boundary conditions imposed at the cylinder ends. By appropriate impulsive changes of end conditions, spanwise wave number "shocks'' can be produced that travel along the cylinder span. These shock experiments, together with data from steady oblique shedding patterns, are used to determine the parameters for the spanwise Ginzburg–Landau model, which has already been used successfully to describe many of the phenomena observed in cylinder wakes. We then demonstrate experimentally that, in analogy to gasdynamics, it is also possible to produce "expansion waves'' of the spanwise wave number, which are well described by the Ginzburg–Landau model without further adjustment of its parameters. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: With the increasing duration of space flights, the development of a permanent facility in space, and the increasing use of ground-based hyperthermal atomic oxygen sources there is a need for a simple instrument to provide long-term monitoring of the beam flux. Such an instrument can also be used as a diagnostic tool to investigate the material degradation process. Reliance on models of the upper atmosphere to determine the fluence of atomic oxygen is not only necessarily complex but also imprecise due to the strong dependence of oxygen concentration on day/night, latitude, and solar activity. Mass spectroscopy, the traditional method for determining the gas phase species densities at low pressure, is not only expensive but is limited in the area that it can monitor as well as subject to effects of material degradation. Our group has developed a simple and inexpensive dosimeter to measure the atomic oxygen fluence via the change in resistance as the sensor element is gradually oxidized. The sensors consist of thin-film circuit elements of selected material deposited on a suitable substrate. Four-point resistance measurements are used to monitor the change in sensor resistance with respect to time. Results obtained from silver and carbon dosimeters flown on STS-46 (CONCAP-II-01) indicate that such sensors are sensitive enough to monitor the diurnal variations in atomic oxygen distribution and sufficiently durable to last the lifetime of a mission. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Influence of mechanically separated lamb (MSL), NaCl level, processing conditions and extenders on composition and quality of 72 chunked and formed lamb roasts were evaluated. Roasts with 0.5% NaCl had significantly (P〈0.05) lower juiciness and flavor scores than roasts containing 1.0-2.0% NaCl. Muscle chunk separation was more extensive and Instron breaking strength values were lower at the 0.5% NaCl level. Roasts containing 30% MSL were more tender and juicy than roasts containing 10% MSL and they had less cook loss. Soy-extended roasts had less desirable juiciness, flavor and texture scores and were lower in fat and lighter in color than control roasts or roasts containing dried skim milk. All roast formulations had TBA values below 1.0.
