    Notes: The electromagnetic stopping of intense and relativistic electron beams (REB) arising from femtosecond lasers interacting with a precompressed deuterium+tritium (DT) fuel is investigated within the Bohr–Fermi formalism with a large impact parameter. Dynamical intrabeam correlations through long-range collision with target electrons are shown to be quantitatively significant for various arrangements of projectile electrons and the overall REB penetration in the DT fuel. One thus expects much shorter stopping ranges yielding an easier access to fuel ignition through hot spots production. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A fully electromagnetic particle in cell-Monte Carlo (PIC-MCC) code is considered for the ballistic transport of intense ion beams in a reaction chamber field with Flibe gas surrounding a pellet with a thermonuclear fuel in it. A specific emphasis is given to a self-consistent treatment of beam boundary conditions. Spurious electromagnetic waves are evacuated out of the grid, and a modified Maxwell system corrects for Gauss theorem error. A dynamical grid with self-adaptating field follows beam convergence. Final ion propagation in the Hylife II [R. Moir, Fusion Technol. 29, 306 (1991)] scheme and also in the space charge compensated one is investigated at length. For the first, a partial beam neutralization is identified only through electron background. The second displays an acceptable focalization at pellet, the background electron temperature has a significant influence on beam minimum radius. Transverse emittance is given specific attention.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: All the Thomas–Fermi approaches to the thermodynamics and atomic physics properties of dense and ionized matter consisting of a single element are systematically derived and compared within a density-functional theoretical framework. The corresponding results are contrasted to those of the average atom model by using similar approximations for exchange, correlation, and gradient corrections. Emphasis is led on equations of state, ionization, level shifts, and radial moments. The same numerical algorithms are used to unravel similar trends or identify specific ones, in terms of density and temperature variations. The most sophisticated Thomas–Fermi–Dirac–Weizäcker method yields the closest results to the hybrid average atom model using quantized bound states. Parameters ranges of potential interest for inertially confined thermonuclear fusion stress out density in the 0.1–10 times the solid, and temperature up to 10 keV. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Correlated ion stopping of charged debris resulting from the fragmentation of energetic cluster ions focussed on Au foam converters is considered for driving indirectly a thermonuclear capsule. The 1D simulation of converter time evolution demonstrates a very high conversion efficiency of projectile energy into hard X-ray photons building up a very hot (Tr 〉 300 eV) thermal bath. Intense and energetic cluster ion beams thus demonstrate considerable potential as a novel driver for inertial confinement fusion.

    Notes: Abstract The interaction of relativistic electrons produced by ultrafast lasers focussing them on strongly precompressed thermonuclearfuel is analytically modelled. Energy loss to target electrons is treated through binary collisions and Langmuir wave excitation. The overall penetration depth is determined by quasielastic and multiple scattering on target ions. It thus appears possible to ignite efficient hot spots in a target with density larger than 300 g/cc.

    Notes: Abstract Enhanced energy loss of 333 MeV 238Uions in a hydrogen discharge plasma with a high degree of ionization has been observed. The ion stopping in a plasma environment exceeds the stopping in cold matter by more than a factor of two. Measured stopping powers are in agreement with theoretical predictions for the energy loss of heavy ions in a hydrogen plasma.

    Notes: Abstract Scattering effects are considered for radiative transfer within randomly distributed and binary mixtures in one dimension. The most general formalism is developed within the framework of the invariant imbedding method. The lengthL of the random sample thus appears as a new variable. One transmission coefficientT(L) suffices to specify locally the intensities. By analogy with the homogeneous situation, one introduces an effective opacity with 〈T〉=(1+σeff L)−1 fulfilling σeff〈〈σ〉=p 0σ0+p 1σ1(0 and 1 refer, respectively, to the components involved in the mixture). Equality is reached whenL→0, ∞. Otherwise, σeff displays a deep transmission window. It is numerically expressed for three combinations of opacities (σ0,σ1) and average grain sizes (λ0, λ1). These results are of crucial concern in optimizing an ICF compression for a pellet nonuniformly illuminated by intense laser or ion beams.

    Notes: Abstract Simulated annealing (SA) is being increasingly used for the generation of stochastic models of spatial phenomena because of its flexibility to integrate data of diverse types and scales. The major shortcoming of SA is the extensive CPU requirements. We present a perturbation mechanism that significantly improves the CPU speed. Two conventional perturbation mechanisms are to (1) randomly select two locations and swap their attribute values, or (2) visit a randomly selected location and draw a new value from the global histogram. The proposed perturbation mechanism is a modification of option 2: each candidate value is drawn from a local conditional distribution built with a template of kriging weights rather than from the global distribution. This results in accepting more perturbations and in perturbations that improve the variogram reproduction for short scale lags. We document the new method, the increased convergence speed, and the improved variogram reproduction. Implementation details of the method such as the size of the local neighborhood are considered.
