    Notes: A new ansatz for local electron correlation is introduced, which truncates double substitutions subject to a triatomics in molecules (TRIM) criterion. TRIM includes all double substitutions in which one occupied-virtual substitution is atomic while the other substitution can be nonlocal (a cubic number, before cutoffs). With an additional approximation, the TRIM second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) model can be noniteratively solved; this is the model that is implemented. Results are shown for absolute energies of alkane and polyene chains, rotational barriers of substituted ethylenes and benzenes, and association energies of the water and neon dimers. Over 99.7% of the untruncated MP2 energy is recovered for the test cases, and the relative energies of small systems are in error by less than 0.1 kcal/mol. By contrast, a diatomics in molecules (DIM) truncation recovers about 95% of the full MP2 energy, and yields errors several times larger for relative energies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Anonymous distributed computing systems consist of potentially millions of heterogeneous processing nodes connected by the global Internet. These nodes can be administered by thousands of organizations and individuals, with no direct knowledge of each other. This work defines anonymous distributed computing systems in general then focuses on the specifics of an applet-based approach for large-scale, anonymous, distributed computing on the Internet. A user wishing to participate in a computation connects to a distribution server, which provides information about available computations, and then connects to a computation server with a computation to distribute. A Java class is downloaded, which communicates with the computation server to obtain data, performs the computation, and returns the result. Since any computer on the Internet can participate in these computations, potentially a large number of computers can participate in a single computation.

    Notes: Recent interest in the Internet as a medium for commerce has raised questions about the usefulness of branding on the World Wide Web. Examines whether consumers use brands as sources of information when shopping on the Internet. Applying theory from the economics of information, predicts that recent adopters of the Internet will be less proficient at searching for product information and will rely more on brands. As they gather more experience on the Internet, their search proficiency should rise and their brand reliance should fall. These hypotheses are tested and confirmed using usage and opinion survey data from the Internet community. The results suggest that branding can facilitate consumers' acceptance of electronic commerce.

    Notes: Two approaches to measuring perceptions of synergistic risk were compared, one using the traditional Likert scale, the other using an anchored, relative scale. Perception of synergistic risk was defined as rating the combined hazard as more risky than each of its constituent single hazards. In a within-subjects design, a convenience sample from the community (N= 604) rated three hazard combinations and their constituents: Driving while Intoxicated (familiar, high synergy), Radon and Smoking (unfamiliar, high synergy), and Smoking and Driving (familiar, low synergy), on both scales. The relative scale was expected to be a more sensitive measure of synergy than the Likert scale. The effects of item order (single hazards rated first versus combined hazards rated first) were examined between subjects. Driving while Intoxicated was perceived by the large majority of participants as a synergistic risk on both scales, but neither of the other two combined hazards were rated synergistically on either scale. The relative scale demonstrated a slight advantage over the Likert scale, and presenting the single hazards first for the relative scale produced more synergistic ratings. It is recommended that anchored, relative scales be used to measure synergy and that single hazards be presented prior to the combined hazards when using relative scales.

    Notes: Zea mays L.), especially grain yield, display low correlations between the trait values observed in inbred and hybrid progeny. Comparisons of quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling inbred per se and hybrid performance are needed to understand the underlying genetic factors, and to determine the utility of QTL detected in the two progeny types. DNA markers were used to identify QTL for grain yield and grain moisture in hybrid progeny of F2:3 and F6:8 lines from a Mo17xH99 population. For both generations, testcross progeny were developed by crossing the lines to three inbred testers (B91, A632, B73). Each testcross population was evaluated in field trials with two replications in eight environments. The testcross progeny from the two generations were evaluated at the same locations but in different years. QTL were identified within each testcross population and for mean testcross (MTC) performance. Individual tester QTL effects were not consistent in rank or detection across generations; however, parental contributions were consistent. MTC effects were more consistent across generations with most of the QTL with large effects being detected across generations. QTL detected with only one tester were not necessarily detected for the other two testers, especially for grain yield, but parental contributions were consistent when QTL were detected in a region for more than one tester. The QTL for grain yield identified in this population for inbred and hybrid progeny show only partial correspondence, indicating that marker-assisted selection programs would need to identify and incorporate QTL for both progeny types.

    Description: The morphological and molecular evidence for higher-level reptile relationships is reassessed, A combined analysis of 176 osteological, 40 soft anatomical, and 2903 (1783 aligned) molecular characters in 28 amniote taxa yields the traditional reptile tree. Synapsids (including mammals) are the sister taxon to all other amniotes, including all extant reptiles. Turtles group with anapsid parareptiles and fall outside a monophyletic Diapsida. Within diapsids, squamates and Sphenodon form a monophyletic Lepidosauria, and crocodiles plus birds form a monophyletic Archosauria. This tree is identical to the tree strongly supported by the osteological data alone when fossils are included. In a combined analysis the strong osteological signal linking turtles with anapsids is sufficient to override a soft anatomical signal placing turtles next to a heterodox archosaur-mammal clade, and a weaker molecular signal linking turtles with archosaurs. However, the turtle-archosaur clade cannot be statistically rejected. When fossils are ignored, the signal in the osteological data set disappears and, in a combined analysis of morphology and molecules, the molecular (turtle-archosaur) signal prevails. These results highlight the importance of fossils, not just in osteological studies, but even in “combined” analyses where they cannot be scored for the majority of characters (soft anatomy and molecules). Although the total number of molecular traits (2903) is much greater than the total number of morphological taits (216), when only characters informative at the relevant levels are considered, the two data sets are approximately equal in size. The partition homogeneity test yields unreliable results unless uninformative (invariant and autapomorphic) characters are excluded. Analyses of the mitochondrial data suggest that recent evidence from nuclear genes for a heterodox turtlecrocodile clade (excluding birds) might be an artefact of inadequate sampling of a diverse outgroup (mammals) and thus, problems with rooting the reptile tree.
