Description: We have produced a draft sequence of the rice genome for the most widely cultivated subspecies in China, Oryza sativa L. ssp. indica, by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The genome was 466 megabases in size, with an estimated 46,022 to 55,615 genes. Functional coverage in the assembled sequences was 92.0%. About 42.2% of the genome was in exact 20-nucleotide oligomer repeats, and most of the transposons were in the intergenic regions between genes. Although 80.6% of predicted Arabidopsis thaliana genes had a homolog in rice, only 49.4% of predicted rice genes had a homolog in A. thaliana. The large proportion of rice genes with no recognizable homologs is due to a gradient in the GC content of rice coding sequences.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Yu, Jun -- Hu, Songnian -- Wang, Jun -- Wong, Gane Ka-Shu -- Li, Songgang -- Liu, Bin -- Deng, Yajun -- Dai, Li -- Zhou, Yan -- Zhang, Xiuqing -- Cao, Mengliang -- Liu, Jing -- Sun, Jiandong -- Tang, Jiabin -- Chen, Yanjiong -- Huang, Xiaobing -- Lin, Wei -- Ye, Chen -- Tong, Wei -- Cong, Lijuan -- Geng, Jianing -- Han, Yujun -- Li, Lin -- Li, Wei -- Hu, Guangqiang -- Huang, Xiangang -- Li, Wenjie -- Li, Jian -- Liu, Zhanwei -- Li, Long -- Liu, Jianping -- Qi, Qiuhui -- Liu, Jinsong -- Li, Li -- Li, Tao -- Wang, Xuegang -- Lu, Hong -- Wu, Tingting -- Zhu, Miao -- Ni, Peixiang -- Han, Hua -- Dong, Wei -- Ren, Xiaoyu -- Feng, Xiaoli -- Cui, Peng -- Li, Xianran -- Wang, Hao -- Xu, Xin -- Zhai, Wenxue -- Xu, Zhao -- Zhang, Jinsong -- He, Sijie -- Zhang, Jianguo -- Xu, Jichen -- Zhang, Kunlin -- Zheng, Xianwu -- Dong, Jianhai -- Zeng, Wanyong -- Tao, Lin -- Ye, Jia -- Tan, Jun -- Ren, Xide -- Chen, Xuewei -- He, Jun -- Liu, Daofeng -- Tian, Wei -- Tian, Chaoguang -- Xia, Hongai -- Bao, Qiyu -- Li, Gang -- Gao, Hui -- Cao, Ting -- Wang, Juan -- Zhao, Wenming -- Li, Ping -- Chen, Wei -- Wang, Xudong -- Zhang, Yong -- Hu, Jianfei -- Wang, Jing -- Liu, Song -- Yang, Jian -- Zhang, Guangyu -- Xiong, Yuqing -- Li, Zhijie -- Mao, Long -- Zhou, Chengshu -- Zhu, Zhen -- Chen, Runsheng -- Hao, Bailin -- Zheng, Weimou -- Chen, Shouyi -- Guo, Wei -- Li, Guojie -- Liu, Siqi -- Tao, Ming -- Wang, Jian -- Zhu, Lihuang -- Yuan, Longping -- Yang, Huanming -- 1 RO1 ES09909/ES/NIEHS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Apr 5;296(5565):79-92.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Beijing Genomics Institute/Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 101300, China.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11935017" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The circuitry and function of mammalian visual cortex are shaped by patterns of visual stimuli, a plasticity likely mediated by synaptic modifications. In the adult cat, asynchronous visual stimuli in two adjacent retinal regions controlled the relative spike timing of two groups of cortical neurons with high precision. This asynchronous pairing induced rapid modifications of intracortical connections and shifts in receptive fields. These changes depended on the temporal order and interval between visual stimuli in a manner consistent with spike timing-dependent synaptic plasticity. Parallel to the cortical modifications found in the cat, such asynchronous visual stimuli also induced shifts in human spatial perception.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fu, Yu-Xi -- Djupsund, Kaj -- Gao, Hongfeng -- Hayden, Benjamin -- Shen, Kai -- Dan, Yang -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Jun 14;296(5575):1999-2003.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Division of Neurobiology, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12065829" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The lattice dynamics of five compounds with the caesium chloride structure have been investigated using shell models. Debye–Waller factors for these compounds are calculated over the temperature range from 1 to 1000 K and the results are presented analytically in a polynomial form. When experimental results are available, the calculated results are compared to the experimentally measured Debye–Waller factors and typically the discrepancies between these factors are less than 10%.

Notes: A new mode of 0°–360° bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is developed by using a parameter space method. This new mode possesses a large dΔn value that provides a possibility of using a 4.8–7 μm cell gap and a 6.5 V operating voltage for the new 0°–360° BTN cells. The high-contrast ratios above 80 within −80°–80° viewing-angle ranges are obtained experimentally in a horizontal direction, and the highest contrast ratio achieved is up to 250. In the contrast ratio, the experiment's results concur with the simulation results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A π/2 and 5π/2 twist bistable nematic liquid crystal cell is optimized in optics by a parameter space approach. The cell possesses good contrast ratio, a preferable dΔn value, a wide viewing angle, and black–white display. Three switching wave forms can be used to switch the cell between π/2 and 5π/2 twist states. Controlling the selection voltage amplitude can provide gray scales for the cell. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Theoretical analysis and numerical modeling indicate that, under high fields, the director of a thin region of liquid crystal close to the wall of a twisted nematic cell returns to the "easy" axis on the interface. Polarization conversion reflectivity signals are recorded for half-leaky guided modes from a twisted nematic cell subject to high ac fields. By fitting model theory to reflectivities recorded for a particular region of incidence angles, the director twist at the cell walls is deduced. In the high-field limit, this then gives the original director alignment axis, the easy axis, at the wall of a twisted nematic cell. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fully leaky guided optical modes are used to explore the director profile in a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell built using a pair of high-index glass plates. This allows access to the pseudocritical angles corresponding to the liquid-crystal indices. Optical data is recorded over a range of angles of incidence with the cell subject to ac voltages. At higher-applied fields, the director in the cell center aligns almost homeotropically. Then the two surface regions become elastically decoupled, the directors at the surfaces realigning along the original alignment axes. Beyond the pseudo-critical angle corresponding to the low index of the liquid-crystal two minima of the polarization conserving transmission signal, for transverse electric polarization, TSS (over a particular range of incidence angles) are found as the cell rotation angle is changed. These two minima give the original alignment directions of the director, the easy axes, at the two substrates, information vital to the measurement of the torsional anchoring energies at the interfaces of the cells. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
