    Notes: Abstract Five species of bivalves and two species of vestimentiferan tubeworms were collected from hydrocarbon seeps in the Gulf of Mexico, and the composition of their free amino acid and related compounds analysed. Like other marine molluscs, taurine, glycine, glutamic acid, and alanine were abundant in the seep bivalves, but, unlike other molluscs, hypotaurine and thiotaurine were also abundant in the seep species. The relative levels of the most abundant amino compounds indicate that glycine is likely to be an important osmoregulatory compound in the bivalves, but not in the vestimentiferans. A consistent pattern of decreasing taurine:glycine ratio with increasing depth was evident in both vent and seep bivalves, and attributed to differences in the relative availability of taurine and glycine in their diet. Additionally, the generally high glutamate levels and higher levels in the symbiont-containing gills are interpreted as consistent with the proposed role of glutamate as a nutritive transfer molecule in these symbioses. The distribution of hypotaurine and thiotaurine in the seep species is discussed in relation to previously proposed hypotheses on the function of these compounds: hypotaurine as an antioxidant, and thiotaurine as a binding and transport molecule for reduced-sulphur species.

    Notes: We have determined the sequences of 5S rRNA and spliced leader (SL) RNA genes, and adjacent intergenic regions for representatives of all known trypanosomatid genera parasitizing insects. The genetic loci have been analyzed separately as well as by a combined approach. Several isolates, assigned by morphology to different genera (Leptomonas spp., Blastocrithidia spp.), seem to belong to a single species with an unexpectedly wide host and geographical range. An unnamed trypanosomatid isolated from rats in Egypt was found to belong to the genus Herpetomonas, so far associated with insect hosts only. It is closely related to Herpetomonas ztiplika, a parasite of a blood-sucking biting midge. Apparently several different trypanosomatid species can infect one insect species, as exemplified by Leptomonas sp. PL and Wallaceina sp. Wsd, which were isolated from different specimens of Salda littoralis on the same locality and day. However, since the same species of Leptomonas was obtained from insect hosts belonging to different genera, some insect trypanosomatids may have low host specificity. Our data revealed additional discrepancies between molecular phylogenetic data and cell morphology, rendering current trypanosomatid taxonomy unreliable.

    Notes: Volume diffusion and dislocation creep at T ∼ 800 °C led to high finite strain in granulite and orthogneiss of the Ohře crystalline complex (North Bohemian shear zone). Intragranular creep by volume diffusion is indicated by (i) lobate phase boundaries between feldspar and quartz, and (ii) removal of perthite lamellae and precipitation of tiny, aluminium-rich needles at the margins of K-feldspar. The striking diffusional-creep structures imply high interfacial free energy that has been preserved from equilibration as a result of rapid cooling. U–Pb dating of monazite (342 ± 1 Ma) and 40Ar–39Ar dating of muscovite (341 ± 4 Ma) of Kadaň orthogneiss result in a cooling rate of 50 + 25/−17 °C Myr−1. This high value is attributed to collapse-related ‘elevator-style’ movements along the North Bohemian shear zone, resulting in the juxtaposition of upper crustal rocks of the Tepla–Barrandian unit against lower crustal rocks of the Erzgebirge crystalline complex.

The comparatively higher frequency and wider distribution of this process defines an innovation society and its economy. This article proposes a focus on the individual as the first beneficiary of preparatory and on-the-job-services to help evolve innovation societies for coping with five major "divides" currently driving the unequal distribution of global opportunity. To this end, the article proposes developing personal capital through role evolution, rehearsal, and assessment processes supported by "virtual" selves.

    Notes: Abstract The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), calculated from pH and total alkalinity measurements, was monitored together with chlorophyll a and bacterioplankton biomass in shallow coastal water located inside and outside a giant kelp bed (Macrocystis pyrifera) situated in the Kerguelen Archipelago, Southern Ocean. In spite of large changes over a short time-scale, pCO2 variations over the year are large and exhibit a seasonal pattern in which the different stages of the annual biological turnover are well marked. The overall pattern of pCO2 variations is related to biological activity (development of both photosynthesis and respiration) during almost the whole year. However, physical and thermodynamical constraints exert a strong influence on pCO2 at meso time-scale (10 days) and/or when biological activity is weak. Macrocystis acts to maintain pCO2 below saturation almost the whole year and large undersaturations (pCO2 as low as 20 μatm) were observed within the kelp bed. Furthermore, primary production of Macrocystis covers a period of 8 ∼ 9 months a year from winter to late summer and the kelp bed seems to favour the spring phytoplanktonic bloom. The buffer factor β indicates that, outside the kelp bed, inorganic carbon dynamics are mainly influenced by air-sea exchange and photosynthesis without calcification. Inside the kelp bed, β suggests calcification by the epiphytic community.

    Notes: Abstract Triple resonance HCN and HCNCH experiments are reliable methods of establishing sugar-to-base connectivity in the NMR spectra of isotopicaly labeled oligonucleotides. However, with larger molecules the sensitivity of the experiments is drastically reduced due to relaxation processes. Since the polarization transfer between 13C and 15N nuclei relies on rather small heteronuclear coupling constants (11–12 Hz), the long evolution periods (up to 30–40 ms) in the pulse sequences cannot be avoided. Therefore any effort to enhance sensitivity has to concentrate on manipulating the spin system in such a way that the spin–spin relaxation rates would be minimized. In the present paper we analyze the efficiency of the two known approaches of relaxation rate control, namely the use of multiple-quantum coherence (MQ) and of the relaxation interference between chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar relaxation – TROSY. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that for the sugar moiety (H1′-C1′-N1/9) the MQ approach is clearly preferable. For the base moiety (H6/8-C6/8-N1/9), however, the TROSY shows results superior to the MQ suppression of the dipole–dipole relaxation at moderate magnetic fields (500 MHz) and the sensitivity improvement becomes dramatically more pronounced at very high fields (800 MHz). The pulse schemes of the triple-resonance HCN experiments with sensitivity optimized performance for unambiguous assignments of intra-residual sugar-to-base connectivities combining both approaches are presented.
