Notes: Recognizes the link between rhetoric and organizational outcomes in organizational theory. Suggests that it is a link which could also be developed in organizational change management; and that selected literary texts could provide a valid learning resource for exploring the role of root metaphors in organizational culture and in management development. Literary artists filter "real life" through a personal, but sensitively attuned conduit; so their "findings" and "conclusions" provide a challenging alternative to the traditional case study. If, for example, literary texts suggest that root metaphors in organizational culture influence action, then it would follow that management initiative to change a root metaphor could lead to change in action outcomes.

Notes: This paper identifies influential, but previously unrecognized, subtexts in the writings of Frederick Winslow Taylor. Working with analytical methods developed from reader-response theories of literary criticism, we look at the words of the text as we share the standard meaning-making of the management community, as well as through the words of the text searching out the worldview that emerges from our particular reading of the subtext. We have described our approach to reading as ‘toggling’: that is, switching between reading text ‘rhetorically’ and reading it ‘philosophically’. We conclude that reader identification with textual voices may appear in philosophical as well as rhetorical reading outcomes – that Taylor's text may inveigle readers into accepting a moral worldview wrapped up in a seemingly rational argument – and that ‘toggling’ would empower management theory readers.

Notes: Institutional investment in New Zealand public companies has important implications for corporate governance of those companies. This study investigates the corporate governance issues that are perceived as important by fund managers, and the extent to which they become involved in the governance aspect of their portfolio companies. 14 NZ fund managers from a total population of 20 were interviewed. The findings reveal that fund managers would like to see more independence in governance processes and structure: for example, the proportion of independent directors, the CEO's role and the selection of new directors. In terms of remuneration for executive directors, fund managers in Australia and New Zealand prefer performance-based remuneration, but they admit that the formulation of appropriate schemes is complex. Two cases of intervention in the governance affairs of publicly listed companies attest to the active interest of fund managers.

Notes: Uses Kenneth Burke's "dramatistic pentad" as an analytical framework to analyse a company event that in New Zealand became symbolic of social responsibility in action. Presents the event in which the staff of an Auckland food processing operation was flown to Western Samoa for a weekend "picnic". Explores the act - what happened; the scene the physical, geographic and cultural milieu of the action; the agent - managing director Dick Hubbard's individual identity and the role he played out in terms of the action; the agency - the means by which Hubbard was enabled to accomplish this action, and his role in initiating, approving and funding the staff picnic; and finally, the purpose - the intended effect of the action and a consideration of perceived outcomes. Considers the usefulness of the dramatistic pentad to other organisational contexts. Concludes that it provides a useful model to guide the analysis of diverse organisational texts.

Notes: Abstract Conformance control for ATM cells is based on a real-time reactive algorithm which delivers a value depending on inputs from the network. This value must always fit with a well defined theoretical value. We present here the correctness proof of the algorithm standardized for the ATM transfer capability called ABR. The proof turned out to produce a key argument during the standardization process of ABR.

Notes: Abstract Previously we showed that dormancy break of spindle tree embryos after gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment was followed by an increase in arginine decarboxylase (ADC) activity (Béranger-Novat N. et al., Plant Sc. 102: 139–145, 1994). These results indicated that arginine decarboxylase pathway mediate hormone-induced growth responses in spindle tree embryos. In the present investigation we show that in GA3-treated embryos diamine oxidase (DAO) increases immediately after putrescine content and the increase in DAO activity paralleles the accumulation of putrescine at the beginning of the culture (before the visible appearance of the radicle). In this system polyamine oxidase (PAO) increases immediately after DAO activity and follows closely the increase in spermidine content. These results demonstrate a direct correlation between the biosynthesis and oxidation of putrescine and spermidine. At every stage of development DAO and putrescine levels are lower than spermidine and PAO levels. Dormant embryos can be distinguished from GA3-treated embryos by a complete lack of putrescine accumulation. In dormant embryos compared to GA3-treated embryos DAO changed more or less in parallel and on the whole seemed to follow the same content and distribution, but the kinetics of the activation of DAOs were different in dormant embryos with a delay of 1.5 day for the first and 1 day for the second peak. During the first days of culture at least up to 4 days the distribution of spermidine and PAO in GA3-treated embryos followed the same pattern observed in dormant embryos, but the levels of spermidine and PAO were greatly reduced in dormant embryos. On the other hand the kinetics of the activation of PAOs were different in dormant embryos with a delay of 1 day. The results suggest that dormant embryos are deficient in their ability to synthesize polyamines efficiently and support the view that spermidine catabolism (via PAO pool) is limiting in untreated embryos during the first days of culture.

Notes: Abstract In vitro formation of roots and somatic embryos is obtained from cotyledon explants of a Spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus L.) cultured on two different media: a medium inducing callus formation and the production of roots, and a medium inducing callus formation, root and somatic embryo production. We studied the effects of α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific, irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) on root and somatic embryo production, growth and titers of putrescine in Euonymus explants and explant-derived calli. Early changes in putrescine levels were detected in both cultures before the visible emergence of roots or somatic embryos. DFMO rapidly inhibited putrescine accumulation and growth in non-embryogenic calli and highly stimulated rooting activity. DFMO partially inhibited putrescine accumulation in embryogenic calli. This inhibition had no effects on callus growth but significantly reduced the time of emergence of roots and highly stimulated somatic embryo production. The relationship among putrescine, putrescine metabolism, growth, root and somatic embryo formation is discussed.
