Notes: Abstract The International Germanium Experiment (IGEX) has now analyzed 117 mol yr of data from its isotopically enriched (86% 76Ge) germanium detectors. Applying pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to the more recent data, the lower bound on the half-life for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge is deduced: T 1/2(0ν)〉1.57×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This corresponds to an upper bound on the Majorana neutrino mass parameter, 〈m ν〉, between 0.33 eV and 1.35 eV depending on the choice of theoretical nuclear matrix elements used in the analysis.

Notes: Abstract The estuary of Odiel and Tinto rivers, located on the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, receives acidic fluvial water discharges with high concentrations of sulphates and heavy metals from these rivers. In addition, a big industrial complex which efflues directly on the system is located in the same estuary. The effluents induce the presence in the estuary of high concentrations of heavy metals and phospates (nutrients). The application of factorial analysis techniques on the nutrients and heavy metal concentrations in 46 water samples taken from 32 different sampling stations located along the estuary, allows three groups of elements and compounds with a distinct origin to be determinated. So, Cu and Zn have a clear fluvial provenance, whereas PO4 and As are clearly industrial wastes and Cl, K, Ca, Li, Rb and Sr come from the sea. From the factorial analyses we can deduce the existence of two agents controlling the behavior of the analyzed elements, which are: the tidal exchange with the open sea and the fluvial supply.

Notes: Abstract  Mining of massive sulfide deposits in southwestern Spain extending back to the Copper and Bronze Ages has resulted in the pollution of the Rio Tinto fluvial-estuarine complex, the site of Columbus' departure for the New World in 1492. Additional sources of potential pollution include the large industrial complex at Huelva near the lower portion of the estuary. Extensive analysis of surface sediment samples and cores has established that there are no geographic trends in the distribution of the pollutants, which include Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Ti, Ba, Cr, V and Co. These data have, however, demonstrated that tidal flux within the estuary carries phosphorus and perhaps other elements from the industrial complex at Huelva to the tidal limit of the system, several kilometers upstream from the discharge site. Radiometric analysis of short cores shows that sedimentation rates over at least the past couple of centuries have been about 0.3 cm/year. These data and that from a single deep core demonstrate that the estuary was polluted from mining activity long before the large-scale operations began in the late nineteenth century.

Notes: Abstract To search for cold dark matter (CDM) particles, the data from two (Ge-76 and Ge-natural) detectors, fabricated in the first phase of the IGEX collaboration, were accumulated and analyzed for a period from May 1995 to May 1999. The use of effective passive and active shielding together with pulse shape discrimination allowed us to perform long-term measurements with an energy threshold of 2 keV at a level of the residual background 0.1 counts/(kg keV d). New restrictions on masses of weakly interacting massive particles and the cross section of their elastic scattering on nuclei have been obtained from the data corresponding to 810 d of live time. The derived exclusion plots compete with the best bounds obtained so far. Annual modulations of the CDM signal have been also investigated. It is shown that the planned operation of all IGEX detectors (at Canfranc and Baksan) with the recently achieved low-energy thresholds gives a chance to achieve the DAMA annual modulation sensitivity region in a nearest future.

Notes: This article presents a generalization of the standard Darboux transform applied to Sturm–Liouville differential equations. This is achieved with the aid of an ansatz as a particular solution for the Riccati relationship involved, which in turn led us to obtain its generalized Darboux solution that contains, as a particular case, the standard Darboux transform. The proposed generalized Darboux transform (GDT), applied to the quantum mechanical field, gives the opportunity to prove the existence of standard and generalized Darboux potentials that match with the so-called isospectral potentials. This is exemplified by obtaining, through the GDT, a set of standard and generalized Darboux potentials that form the partner of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator model for any quantum principal number. The worked example indicates how the GDT can be used to obtain the isospectral potentials associated to any known specific potential. We consider also the application of our method as proposed to the theory of solitons in order to show why the GDT will be important in other fields of application where the standard Darboux transform is usually concerned. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : The effects of calcium hydroxide and screw speed on expansion, pasting, crystallinity, torque, water absorption, and solubility indices upon extruded blue maize meal products were studied, using a central composite experimental design. All the characteristics measured presented a significant quadratic regression model, indicating relationship between the responses and extrusion conditions. It was found that the expansion, crystallinity, torque, water absorption, and solubility indices decreased and the Rapid Viscosity Analyzer's (RVA) pasting characteristics increased with the increase of calcium hydroxide concentrations. The Pearson correlation indicated that the responses presented strong correlation (r 〉 0.7, p 〈 0.01) between them. Extruded products with physical appearance and expansion similar to the control were found at concentrations lower than 0.1% of calcium hydroxide.

Notes: : Three species of cephalopods: volador (Illex coindetii), pota (Todaropsis eblanae), and octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) were classified according to sex, stage of sexual development, and anatomical zone for characterization and functionality of their muscle proteins. The 3 species exhibited very similar levels of total protein. Octopus mantles and arms contained the least proline and the most hydroxyproline. The highest solubility values in immature pota coincided with the lowest apparent viscosity and emulsifying capacity values. The highest insolubility values observed in octopus coincided with the highest viscosity and emulsifying capacity values. However, in volador which exhibited an intermediate solubility, viscosity was very high and emulsifying capacity was very low.

Notes: Abstract. A generalization of the Hulthén potential is presented on the basis of an approach that uses the factorization of a general Hamiltonian by means of a specific model of operational equations with the structure ∼β(r)∓(d/dr). To achieve this goal, the treatment of the V Hs(r) standard Hulthén potential for bound s states is carried out by proposing a particular βp(r) ansatz to identify V Hs(r) by means of a particular Riccati-type relationship. Once the identification has been achieved, the generalized Hulthén potential is obtained straightforwardly with the aid of a general Riccati formula. As expected, the Hamiltonian of the generalized Hulthén potential is isospectral when compared with the corresponding standard Hamiltonian. Moreover, according to the Darboux transform there exists a modified Hulthén potential which is also isospectral. We show that the latter is just a particular case of the generalized Hulthén interaction model.

Notes: Abstract A least‐squares method is used to determine the heat transfer coefficient H of a solid copper bar in air at constant temperature. For this purpose, twelve steady states and their corresponding cooling curves were measured with temperature excesses of the metal over the surrounding air in the range of 11–74°C and were compared to those calculated using a mathematical model to solve the equation for the heat flow in the bar. The model reduces an experimental double exponential law to an overall single exponential and gives similar behavior, within 10% of statistical uncertainty, for H in the steady state and in cooling. The values obtained in this study are in qualitative agreement with the values given in the literature under similar experimental conditions, but there it is not specified how they are obtained in solids.

Notes: Abstract. The non-selfadjoint nature of some second order differential equations with periodic boundary conditions is exhibited by describing properties of its spectrum, such as geometric and algebraic multiplicities and existence of nonreal eigenvalues.
