    Description: Sediments recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 210 Hole 1276A range in age from Early Cretaceous (earliest Albian) to Paleogene (earliest Oligocene). In this study, samples were processed and analyzed for micropaleontological and palynological content, as well as sedimentary components. Core recovery from this site was good (85% between 800 and 1725.16 meters below seafloor), and the majority of samples processed yielded microfossils of some nature. Although none of the major groups are consistently present in all samples, calcareous nannofossils, agglutinated benthic foraminifers, and radiolarians do occur in many samples. The best age constraints for Hole 1276A are provided by calcareous nannofossils and dinoflagellate cysts. Age-diagnostic planktonic foraminifers are more commonly found in redeposited turbidite sandstones rather than in the autochthonous pelagic mudrocks. The depositional environments of the sediments have been interpreted as varying in oxygenation but having been deposited at abyssal depths (〉2000 m) near or below the calcite carbonate depth (CCD). Almost uninterrupted deepwater deposition since the Aptian is evidenced both by the evolutionary succession of biota recovered from the sediments and by the sedimentary history of turbidites and gravity flow deposits derived from neritic and bathyal sources on the adjacent margin. A condensed interval recorded in the Turonian-Maastrichtian is likely associated with sediment starvation at times of high global sea level. A disconformity and condensed interval in the lower middle Eocene (~48.5-43.7 Ma) is associated with a change in global sea level and may be associated with invigorated deepwater current activity. Anoxic conditions affected the deep seafloor of the North Atlantic during Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1b (earliest Albian, ~112 Ma) and OAE2 (Cenomanian-Turonian boundary interval, ~93.5 Ma). Cooling during the early Turonian followed the vast carbon burial associated with OAE2 based on calcareous nannofossil assemblages. The recovery of a nearly complete Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary transition represents one of the deepest-water records of the end-Cretaceous event known. Another important paleontological discovery from Hole 1276A was the redeposited large-size benthic foraminifers of Campanian-Maastrichtian and latest Paleocene-early Eocene ages, which point to a nearby source of shallow, warm-water carbonates during these two periods of global warmth.

    Description: Part of the abstract: The Michelson Interferometer for Passive AtmosphericSounding (MIPAS), on-board the European ENVIronmentalSATellite (ENVISAT) launched on 1 March 2002,is a middle infrared Fourier Transform spectrometer measuringthe atmospheric emission spectrum in limb sounding geometry.The instrument is capable to retrieve the vertical distributionMIPAS data were re-processed by ESA using updated versions ofthe Instrument Processing Facility (IPF v4.61 and v4.62) andprovided a complete set of level-2 operational products (geolocatedvertical profiles of temperature and volume mixingratio of H2O, O3, HNO3, CH4, N2O and NO2). MIPAS operated in its standard observation mode for approximately two years, from July 2002 to March 2004. MIPAS data were re-processed by ESA using updated versions of the Instrument Processing Facility (IPF v4.61 and v4.62) and provided a complete set of level-2 operational products (geolocated vertical profiles of temperature and volume mixing ratio of H2O, O3, HNO3, CH4, N2O and NO2). MIPAS operated in its standard observation mode from July 2002 to March 2004, covering the altitude range from the mesosphere to the upper troposphere with relatively high vertical resolution (about 3 km in the stratosphere). In this paper, we report a detailed description of the validation of MIPAS-ENVISAT operational ozone data, that was based on the comparison between MIPAS v4.61 (and, to a lesser extent, v4.62) O3 VMR profilesand a comprehensive set of correlative data, including observations from ozone sondes, ground-based lidar, FTIR and microwave radiometers, remote-sensing and in situ instruments on-board stratospheric aircraft and balloons, concurrent satellite sensors and ozone fields assimilated by theEuropean Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting. A clear indication of the validity of MIPAS O3 vertical profiles is obtained for most of the stratosphere, where the mean relative difference with the individual correlative data sets is always lower than ±10%. Furthermore, these differences always fall within the combined systematic error (from1 hPa to 50 hPa) and the standard deviation is fully consistent with the random error of the comparison (from 1 hPa to 3040 hPa).

    Description: The ENVISAT validation programme for the atmospheric instruments MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOS is based on a number of balloon-borne, aircraft, satellite and ground-based correlative measurements. In particular the activities of validation scientists were coordinated by ESA within the ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign or ESABC. As part of a series of similar papers on other species [this issue] and in parallel to the contribution of the individual validation teams, the present paper provides a synthesis of comparisons performed between MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles produced by the current ESA operational software (Instrument Processing Facility version 4.61 or IPF v4.61, full resolution MIPAS data covering the period 9 July 2002 to 26 March 2004) and correlative measurements obtained from balloon and aircraft experiments as well as from satellite sensors or from ground-based instruments. In the middle stratosphere, no significant bias is observed between MIPAS and correlative measurements, and MIPAS is providing a very consistent and global picture of the distribution of CH4 and N2O in this region. In average, the MIPAS CH4 values show a small positive bias in the lower stratosphere of about 5%. A similar situation is observed for N2O with a positive bias of 4%. In the lower stratosphere/upper troposphere (UT/LS) the individual used MIPAS data version 4.61 still exhibits some unphysical oscillations in individual CH4 and N2O profiles caused by the processing algorithm (with almost no regularization). Taking these problems into account, the MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles are behaving as expected from the internal error estimation of IPF v4.61 and the estimated errors of the correlative measurements.

    Description: Recent paleoseismic investigations have identified a number of active faults in Northern and Western Thailand. Northern Thailand is an intraplate basin and range province, comprised of north-south-trending Cenozoic intermontane grabens and half grabens, bounded by north- to northwest-striking normal to normal-oblique faults and northeast-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults. The basin-bounding normal faults are marked by steep, linear range fronts with triangular facets and wineglass canyons and have slip rates of 0.1 to 0.8 mm/yr. Based on limited data, the average vertical displacement-per-event is about 1.0 to 1.5 m. These faults are characterized by recurrence intervals of thousands to tens of thousands of years and are capable of generating earthquakes up to moment magnitude (M) 7, and larger. The northeast-striking strike-slip faults are marked by shutter ridges, and deflected drainages. Slip rates are 3 mm/yr or less. Western Thailand is dissected by a number of northwest- and north-northwest-striking, right-lateral strike-slip faults related to the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar. Although showing much less activity than the faults in neighboring Myanmar, these faults display abundant evidence for late Quaternary movement, including shutter ridges, sag ponds, and laterally offset streams. The slip rate on these faults is estimated to be 0.5 to 2.0 mm/yr. These faults are considered capable of generating maximum earthquakes of up to M 71/2.

    Description: Spectroscopic measurements of BrO using direct sun and zenith sky viewinggeometries are combined in an optimal estimation retrieval algorithm to obtaintropospheric and stratospheric columns of BrO. Twenty-two twilight periods areinvestigated over Arrival Heights, Antarctica (77.8 S, 166.7 E) during the polar springperiod of 2002. This paper presents the first tropospheric and stratospheric BrO columnretrievals from UV-visible ground-based measurements for a polar location. A directcomparison is made between stratospheric columns retrieved at 80 , 84 , and 88 solarzenith angles (SZA) from the spectroscopic measurements and those calculated by theSLIMCAT three-dimensional chemical transport model. The ground-based column BrOobservations are consistent with a SLIMCAT stratospheric Bry loading of 21.2 parts pertrillion at 20 km. SLIMCAT reproduces the observed sunrise column BrO increase butdoes not match the sunset observations, which display less variation. The significantwarming of the Antarctic polar stratosphere in 2002 led to highly variable stratosphericcolumns being observed. The observed column BrO decreased with the transition fromvortex to extravortex air on 21 September but did not change much following the return ofthe vortex on 12 October. For the tropospheric column, an almost normal distributionconsistent with a background of 0.3 ± 0.3 1013 molecules cm 2 is observed from theground (80 , 84 , and 88 for both sunrise and sunset). A statistically significant bromineexplosion event (at the 2s level) was detected at the end of October with a troposphericcolumn of 1.8 ± 0.1 1013 molecules cm 2. The measured tropospheric columns arecompared with the tropospheric Model of Atmospheric Transport and ChemistryMaxPlanck Institute for Chemistry version model. The tropospheric BrO sunrise columnobservations can only be explained with an additional bromine source other thandecomposition of CH3Br and downward transport of long-lived bromine from thestratosphere. A comparison with the spaceborne Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment(GOME) found the total columns observed from the ground to be 1625% smaller thanthe total columns observed by GOME for SZAs between 80 and 88 .
