    Abstract: The demand for oil and gas has brought exploration and production to unprecedented depths of the world’s oceans. Currently, over 50% of the oil from the Gulf of Mexico now comes from waters in excess of 1,500 meters (one mile) deep, where no oil was produced just 20 years ago. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill blowout did much to change the perception of oil spills as coming just from tanker accidents, train derailments, and pipeline ruptures. In fact, beginning with the Ixtoc 1 spill off Campeche, Mexico in 1979-1980, there have been a series of large spill events originating at the sea bottom and creating a myriad of new environmental and well control challenges. This volume explores the physics, chemistry, sub-surface oil deposition and environmental impacts of deep oil spills. Key lessons learned from the responses to previous deep spills, as well as unresolved scientific questions for additional research are highlighted, all of which are appropriate for governmental regulators, politicians, industry decision-makers, first responders, researchers and students wanting an incisive overview of issues surrounding deep-water oil and gas production.

    Abstract: It has often been said that generals prepare for the next war by re-fighting the last. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill was unlike any previous – an underwater well blowout 1,500 meters deep. Much has been learned in the wake of DWH and these lessons should in turn be applied to both similar oil spill scenarios and those arising from “frontier” explorations by the marine oil industry. The next deep oil well blowout may be at 3,000 meters or even deeper. This volume summarizes regional (Gulf of Mexico) and global megatrends in marine oil exploration and production. Research in a number of key areas including the behavior of oil and gas under extreme pressure, impacts on biological resources of the deep sea, and the fate of oil and gas released in spills is synthesized. A number of deep oil spills are simulated with detailed computer models, and the likely effects of the spills and potential mitigation measures used to combat them are compared. Recommended changes in policies governing marine oil exploration and development are proposed, as well as additional research to close critical and emerging knowledge gaps. This volume synthesizes state-of-the-art research in deep oil spill behavior and response. It is thus relevant for government and industry oil spill responders, policy formulators and implementers, and academics and students desiring an in-depth and balanced overview of key issues and uncertainties surrounding the quest for deep oil and potential impacts on the environment.

    Description: Flow boiling heat transfer, pressure drop and flow pattern of CO?-POE oil mixtures were experimentally investigated in smooth and micro-fin tubes. The POE oil used features full miscibility in the range of operation investigated. The experimental data was evaluated based on mixture properties, used to evaluate and improve established predictive methods. The knowledge obtained contributes to understanding the influence of oil, which is essential for achieving an efficient evaporator design.

    Description: In this work, the task of wide-area indoor people detection in a network of depth sensors is examined. In particular, we investigate how the redundant and complementary multi-view information, including the temporal context, can be jointly leveraged to improve the detection performance. We recast the problem of multi-view people detection in overlapping depth images as an inverse problem and present a generative probabilistic framework to jointly exploit the temporal multi-view image evidence.

    Description: Die Stabilität nicht-vorgemischter, doppelt-verdrallter Flammen wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit mittels numerischer Methoden am Beispiel eines Gasturbinen-Modellbrenners untersucht. Die Ergebnisse der Simulationen erlauben es, den Mechanismus der Stabilisierung abzuleiten, und zeigen, dass die überlegene Zündstabilität der Gegendrallflamme aus einem wesentlich inhomogeneren Mischungsfeld mit einer stark vergrößerten Zone nahestöchiometrischer Gemischzusammensetzungen resultiert.

    Description: In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Seitenwindstabilität von Schienen- und Kraftfahrzeugen im Rahmen einer probabilistischen Analyse untersucht. Aufgrund stochastischer Wind- und Fahrbahnanregungen erfolgt die Quantifizierung der Seitenwindstabilität über Versagenswahrscheinlichkeiten, die über effiziente Monte-Carlo Simulationen und Approximationsmethoden berechnet werden. Der Einfluss unterschiedlicher Zufallsvariablen und Konstruktionsparameter wird über eine Sensitivitätsanalyse untersucht.

    Description: Ground subsidence caused by natural or anthropogenic processes affects major urban areas worldwide. Sinkhole formation and infrastructure fractures have intensified in the federal capital of Maceió (Alagoas, Brazil) since early 2018, forcing authorities to relocate affected residents and place buildings under demolition. In this study, we present a 16-year history (2004–2020) of surface displacement, which shows precursory deformations in 2004–2005, reaching a maximum cumulative subsidence of approximately 200 cm near the Mundaú Lagoon coast in November 2020. By integrating the displacement observations with numerical source modelling, we suggest that extensive subsidence can be primarily associated with the removal of localized, deep-seated material at the location and depth where salt is mined. We discuss the accelerating subsidence rates, influence of severe precipitation events on the aforementioned geological instability, and related hazards. This study suggests that feedback destabilization mechanisms may arise in evaporite systems due to anthropogenic activities, fostering enhanced and complex superficial ground deformation.

    Description: A common trend is the decomposition of large software systems into multiple loosely coupled and independently deployable components in order to improve maintainability or scalability. Consequently, cloud applications’ composition, orchestration, and operation become more complex, as do test and benchmark scenarios. In this work, to address this increasing complexity, we provide a monitoring and logging approach to improve the observability of the distributed software Promotional Loan System (PLS) in Kubernetes. The main focus point of this thesis is a scalability evaluation of the observability-enhanced PLS using the cloud-native benchmarking framework Theodolite. We incorporate multiple tools into Theodolite, examine allowable service level indicators to create a service level objective (SLO), and model complex load profiles to provide a benchmark specification and an executable benchmark for the PLS. The PLS uses messages to assist processes in the promotional loan business, which may include attachments that increase the size of a message. Therefore, we perform a scalability evaluation of the PLS to investigate the degree to which the PLS is able to scale with an increasing rate of and size of messages in two analyses. The first analysis investigates different frequencies in combination with large message sizes and discovers that the maximum amount of manageable bytes is nearly identical for different frequency and size combinations. The second benchmark configuration examines high request rates and demonstrates that the PLS can handle high frequencies if message sizes are small. We discover that the PLS can scale vertically with the number of CPU cores and that the amount of provided memory significantly impacts performance. The number of CPU cores is more critical for high message frequencies than for large message sizes.

    Description: Theodolite is a framework for benchmarking the scalability of cloud-native applications such as microservices. It automates deployment and monitoring of a cloud-native application for different load intensities and provisioned cloud resources and assesses whether specified service level objectives (SLOs) are fulfilled. Provided as a Kubernetes Operator, Theodolite integrates with the cloud-native ecosystem and runs existing deployment configurations of various systems-under-test, load generators, and benchmarks. We give a presentation on Theodolite and exemplify its usage by benchmarking the scalability of the TeaStore microservice reference application.
