    Description: Significance: The “spiny fin,” comprising the anterior part of the dorsal and anal fins, is an evolutionary novelty that contributed to the success of the spiny-rayed fishes. This domain contains heavily ossified spines that serve as defense mechanism and differ from the posterior flexible soft rays. We show that the partitioning of the median fins into spines and soft rays is established through canonical developmental mechanisms responsible for the anterior–posterior patterning of appendages. Furthermore, the coloration of the anal fin in males appears to be genetically linked to soft-ray identity. Comparative analysis including nonacanthomorph fins indicates that the convergent evolution of fin spines across fishes likely involved the repeated exaptation of a deeply conserved developmental program from the anterior fin. Abstract: With over 18,000 species, the Acanthomorpha, or spiny-rayed fishes, form the largest and arguably most diverse radiation of vertebrates. One of the key novelties that contributed to their evolutionary success are the spiny rays in their fins that serve as a defense mechanism. We investigated the patterning mechanisms underlying the differentiation of median fin Anlagen into discrete spiny and soft-rayed domains during the ontogeny of the direct-developing cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni. Distinct transcription factor signatures characterize these two fin domains, whereby mutually exclusive expression of hoxa13a/b with alx4a/b and tbx2b marks the spine to soft-ray boundary. The soft-ray domain is established by BMP inhibition via gremlin1b, which synergizes in the posterior fin with shh secreted from a zone of polarizing activity. Modulation of BMP signaling by chemical inhibition or gremlin1b CRISPR/Cas9 knockout induces homeotic transformations of spines into soft rays and vice versa. The expression of spine and soft-ray genes in nonacanthomorph fins indicates that a combination of exaptation and posterior expansion of an ancestral developmental program for the anterior fin margin allowed the evolution of robustly individuated spiny and soft-rayed domains. We propose that a repeated exaptation of such pattern might underly the convergent evolution of anterior spiny-fin elements across fishes.

    Description: DataLad is a Python-based tool for the joint management of code, data, and their relationship,built on top of a versatile system for data logistics (git-annex) and the most popular distributedversion control system (Git). It adapts principles of open-source software development anddistribution to address the technical challenges of data management, data sharing, and digitalprovenance collection across the life cycle of digital objects. DataLad aims to make datamanagement as easy as managing code. It streamlines procedures to consume, publish, andupdate data, for data of any size or type, and to link them as precisely versioned, lightweightdependencies. DataLad helps to make science more reproducible and FAIR (Wilkinson et al.,2016). It can capture complete and actionable process provenance of data transformations toenable automatic re-computation. The DataLad project (datalad.org) delivers a completelyopen, pioneering platform for flexible decentralized research data management (RDM) (Hanke,Pestilli, et al., 2021). It features a Python and a command-line interface, an extensiblearchitecture, and does not depend on any centralized services but facilitates interoperabilitywith a plurality of existing tools and services. In order to maximize its utility and target audience, DataLad is available for all major operating systems, and can be integrated intoestablished workflows and environments with minimal friction.

    Description: The ongoing transition to renewable energy supply comes with a restructuring of power grids, changing their effective interaction topologies, more and more strongly decentralizing them and substantially modifying their input, output, and response characteristics. All of these changes imply that power grids become increasingly affected by collective, nonlinear dynamic phenomena, structurally and dynamically more distributed and less predictable in space and time, more heterogeneous in its building blocks, and as a consequence less centrally controllable. Here cornerstone aspects of data-driven and mathematical modeling of collective dynamical phenomena emerging in real and model power grid networks by combining theories from nonlinear dynamics, stochastic processes and statistical physics, anomalous statistics, optimization, and graph theory are reviewed. The mathematical background required for adequate modeling and analysis approaches is introduced, an overview of power system models is given, and a range of collective dynamical phenomena are focused on, including synchronization and phase locking, flow (re)routing, Braess’s paradox, geometric frustration, and spreading and localization of perturbations and cascading failures, as well as the nonequilibrium dynamics of power grids, where fluctuations play a pivotal role.

    Description: Frequency measurements indicate the state of a power grid. In fact, deviations from the nominal frequency determine whether the grid is stable or in a critical situation. We aim to understand the fluctuations of the frequency on multiple time scales with a recently proposed method based on detrended fluctuation analysis. It enables us to infer characteristic time scales and generate stochastic models. We capture and quantify known features of the fluctuations like periodicity due to the trading market, response to variations by control systems, and stability of the long time average. We discuss similarities and differences between the British grid and the continental European grid. The power grid (main) frequency, as an observable variable, is not only easily measurable but also contains significant information about the state (and therefore stability) of the considered grid. The information in the frequency variations can include the functionality of control systems, the effect of regular dispatches due to the trading market and moreover the effect of fluctuations in renewable energies (REs) and demands on the grid. Therefore, disentangling the interplay of control systems, dispatch and fluctuations from REs and demands provides deeper insight into the dynamics of the frequency and, consequently, enables us to model or forecast it. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a well-known method for scaling analysis. Recently, it has been shown that one can also recognize typical characteristic time scales in datasets via the DFA fluctuation function. Employing this new approach, we recognize characteristics time scales of the frequency and attempt to recognize the role of the trading market, control systems, REs, as well as consumers in the short- and long-time fluctuations from seconds to weeks. Finally, we model the frequency variations by a superposition of autoregressive models of order two AR(2), a daily cycle, and an additional regulatory component for long periods of time

    Description: Background The incidence of many infections is seasonal e.g. surgical site infections, urinary tract infection and bloodstream infections. We questioned whether there is seasonal variation even in climate-controlled hospitalized patients, and analyzed the influence of climate parameters on nosocomial bloodstream infections. Methods and findings The retrospective cohort study is based on two databases: The German national surveillance system for nosocomial infections in intensive care units (ICU-KISS) from 2001 to 2015 and aggregated monthly climate data. Primary bloodstream infection (PBSI) is defined as a positive blood culture with one (or more) pathogen(s) which are not related to an infection on another site and which were not present at admission. Monthly infection data were matched with postal code, calendar month and corresponding monthly climate and weather data. All analyses were exploratory in nature. 1,196 ICUs reported data on PBSI to KISS. The ICUs were located in 779 hospitals and in 728 different postal codes in Germany. The majority of the 19,194 PBSI were caused by gram-positive bacteria. In total, the incidence density of BSI was 17% (IRR 1.168, 95%CI 1.076–1.268) higher in months with high temperatures (≥20°C) compared to months with low temperatures (〈5°C). The effect was most prominent for gram-negatives; more than one third (38%) higher followed by gram-positives with 13%. Fungi reached their highest IRR at moderately warm temperatures between 15–20°C. At such temperatures fungi showed an increase of 33% compared to temperatures below 5°C. PBSI spiked in summer with a peak in July and August. PBSI differed by pathogen: The majority of bacteria increased with rising temperatures. Enterococci showed no seasonality. S. pneumoniae reached a peak in winter time. The association of the occurrence of PBSI and temperatures ≥20°C was stronger when the mean monthly temperature in the month prior to the occurrence of BSI was considered instead of the temperature in the month of the occurrence of BSI. High average temperatures ≥20°C increased the risk of the development of a PBSI by 16% compared with low temperatures 〈5°C. Conclusions Most nosocomial infections are endogenous in nature; the microbiome plays a crucial role in host health. If gut and skin microbiome varies with season, environmental parameters will contribute to the observed incidence patterns. Similarly, the impact of global warming on both local weather patterns and extreme weather events may influence the acquisition of pathogens. A better understanding of the etiology of these infections is needed to provide guidance for future infection control strategies.

    Description: This dataset was collected during field-based monitoring in the Kali Gandaki River catchment be-tween the years 2013 and 2017. The monitoring aims to understand the hydrological fluxes and feedback with weathering and erosion processes across the mountain range. The Kali Gandaki River sources its water in the North and traverses through the Himalayan Mountain Range, along a north-south transect. The field-based monitoring comprises targeted field campaigns to revisit locations at different years and seasons in order to constrain the annual and intra-annual variability. This is complemented by permanent installations and routine river and rain sampling at two loca-tions, Lete and Purtighat. Lete is situated at the orographic barrier, at ~2500 m asl. and the up-stream catchment integrates the northern part of the Himalayan Range as well as some of the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Purtighat is located further south and integrates the north-ern part as well as south-facing flanks of the Higher and Lower Himalayas. At both locations, auto-mated river monitoring is installed as well as a trained station ward for daily routine sampling. At Lete, rainfall samples are obtained on a daily resolution during the monsoon. This sampling was not feasible at Purtighat for logistic reasons. Instead, rain was sampled daily in Kathmandu. This dataset contains five tables of stable water isotope analysis. One containing grab samples from the Kali Gandaki river in its vicinities and 4 tables with time series sampling from the Kali Gandaki River and from rainfall.
    Description: Methods
    Description: Grab sampling: Grab samples were obtained from all hydrological compartments (spring, river, tributary, snow, ice, and rain) in the Kali Gandaki catchment and its surroundings. The samples were taken during repeated field campaigns covering all seasons during the years 2013 to 2016. Samples were filtered in the field and stored 30ml Nalgene bottles. Snow and ice samples were melted at ambient temperatures before filtering and storing. Stable water isotope time series of rainfall: Samples were collected by a local, trained station ward, during rainfall periods 2016 and 2017. Samples were recuperated always between 8 and 9 o’clock local time (GMT+5:45) if sufficient rainwater was accumulated. At both locations Lete and Kathmandu we used Palmex Rain Sampler RS1 (Gröning et al., 2012). The following isotope ratios, expressed as δ values with VSMOW as a standard, were measured: δ18O and δ2H. Stable water isotope time series of river water: Samples were collected by a local, trained station ward, between the 10th of June 2015 and October 2018 daily during the monsoon (June to Septem-ber) and bi-weekly (October to May) during the dry season. Sampling time was always between 8 and 9 o’clock local time (GMT+5:45). Samples were typically analyzed for stable water isotopic com-position with weekly resolution. The following isotope ratios, expressed as δ values with VSMOW as a standard, were measured: δ18O and δ2H. River time series samples in Purtighat were first obtained at Mirmi Hydropower Intake, upstream of the confluence with Andhi Khola from a suspension bridge in the middle of the river. The sampling location was later moved upstream to Purthighat village, roughly 10km upstream with no major tributary in between.

    Description: New sedimentological data of facies and diagenesis as well as chronological data including strontium (87Sr/86Sr)-isotope ratios and uranium (U)-series dating, radiocarbon (14C) accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating and biostratigraphy from elevated reef terraces (makatea) in the southern Cook Islands of Mangaia, Rarotonga and Aitutaki contribute to controversial discussions regarding age and sea-level relationships of these occurrences during the Neogene and Quaternary. The oldest limestones of the uplifted makatea island of Mangaia include reef-related facies which are mid-Miocene in age, based on new Sr-isotope and biostratigraphical data. In between these older deposits and the lowest coastal reef terrace of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, various older Pleistocene reef-related facies were identified. Based on Sr-isotope ratios, these were deposited during earlier Pleistocene highstands (as old as 2.28 Ma). Rare reef terraces on Rarotonga belong to the Plio-Pleistocene and the late Miocene, according to 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The late Miocene age is enigmatic as it exceeds the age of subaerially exposed volcanic rocks of Rarotonga island. The fossil reef could have formed on an older submarine volcanic high that was later displaced by younger volcanism to its present position, or the Sr-age could be too old due to diagenetic resetting. The Plio-Pleistocene Rarotonga reef terraces are overlain irregularly by Holocene reef deposits that are interpreted as storm rubble. Reef terraces on Aitutaki represent evidence of a higher-than-present (up to 1 m) sea-level during the late Holocene, based on 14C AMS age data. They are very similar to elevated late Holocene reefs of adjacent French Polynesia with regard to composition, elevation and age.
