Notes: Abstract Czochralski grown silicon crystals contain interstitially dissolved oxygen which diffuses on heating to form precipitates of silica. We have examined these precipitates by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) in the Q-range 0.05 Å−1〈Q〈0.4 Å−1. The obtained SANS patterns reveal pronounced anisotropic intensity distributions which resemble the symmetry of the host crystal. The SANS spectra show an anisotropic central peak at Q〈0.1 Å−1 due to the single particle shape and a number of weak intensities for larger Q-values. These weak side maxima are considered correlation peaks or quasi-elastic interference peaks. They show, however, an unexpected and distinct temperature dependence: with decreasing temperature below values of 220 K their intensity is lost slowly, but reversibly. At T = 50 K only the central peak from the single-particle scattering remains unchanged. Upon heating, the correlation peaks regain their former value of intensity and Q-position without any evidence of thermal hysteresis.

Notes: Abstract Observations of the occultation of 28 Sgr by Titan are presented. Apparently being located close to the central line of the occultation track, a double peaked central flash was observed. Some characteristic times of the phenomenon are given.

Notes: Abstract In [3] a particle method is proposed which acts on an infinite grid. Hence, for a numerical application an estimation of the numerically relevant support is necessary. To overcome this difficulty we suggest a finite grid based on Gaussian integration formulas and present numerical results of different test examples.

Notes: Abstract The water permeabilities of 3174 astomatous, isolated cuticular membranes from Citrus aurantium L. leaves were studied. Trees were grown in environmental chambers at temperatures ranging from 15 to 35° C and humidities of 50% and 90%. Photosynthetically active radiation was 500–1000 μmol photons·m−2· s−1. The different growing conditions had no effect on the water permeability of the membranes. However, storing isolated cuticular membranes at 8° C for up to 112 weeks decreased their water permeability, and it is argued that this is a consequence of the healing of defects between wax crystallites, and also indicates the dynamic nature of cuticular waxes.

Notes: Abstract Superferritic stainless steels become embrittled when aged in a temperature interval around 475 °C, This phenomenon has been studied in the alloy Fe-28Cr-2Mo-4Ni-Nb by measuring the decrease in the energy absorbed in the impact test as a function of ageing time at 475 °C. The change which occurs in the microstructure has been studied by small-angle neutron scattering. It is shown that ageing at 475 °C produces the decomposition of the alloy in zones rich in chromium via spinodal decomposition. The high rate of embrittlement observed, compared with that which occurs in Fe-Cr binary alloys of similar chromium content, is related to a faster development of the spinodal decomposition in the steel studied.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of B, Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Zn and agar were determined in samples of the red alga,Pterocladia capillacea, collected during one year in three distinct locations having different hydrologic characteristics, close to the city of Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pattern recognition methods showed that, although these concentrations are subject to temporal variations, they are more dependent on the location from which the samples were collected. Algae from locations with high human activity were richer in P, B, Co, Zn and agar than those from other locations.

Notes: Abstract We have attempted to elucidate the natural history of pulmonary aspergillus intracavitary colonization (PAIC) based on more than 350 cases of the disease observed in the last 11 years and on data collected from the literature. The data indicate that PAIC is a dynamic process consequent to the continual growth and death of fungal elements and also with their relationships to the anatomic features of the cavity (valvular mechanisms, vascular alteration). The clinical presentations reflect immunological changes in the host. Metabolites produced by the species of Aspergillus involved affect the clinical presentation of the syndrome.

Notes: Summary Recently it has been found that the two monkey species Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus fuscicollis, both belonging to the same New World monkey family Callitrichidae and held in the same colony under identical conditions, had extremely different serum ascorbate levels. To examine the ascorbic acid metabolism the14C-excretion of orally given 1-14C-ascorbic acid was studied under conditions of marginal and abundant vitamin C supply and under intentional stress. There were large differences in the mode of14C excretion between low and high ascorbate supply. The differences were smaller between stress/no stress conditions intraindividually than between the two species, but they were in the same manner. In comparable trials S. fuscicollis reacted such that a higher status of stress can be supposed in this species.

Notes: Abstract The isolation and purification of a neutral glycolipid fraction fromTaenia crassiceps metacestodes (KBS strain), harvested from both male and female NMRI mice at 70–80 days following intraperitoneal infection, revealed 24 thin-layer chromatography-designated glycolipid bands. The glycolipids were defined as ceramide mono-(n=3), di-(n=3), tri-(n=4), tetra-(n=5), and 〉tetrasaccharides (n=9) according to their running properties as defined by thin-layer chromatography against standards of known structure. The defined glycolipids were tested for immunoreactivity with sera from noninfected andT. crassiceps-infected NMRI mice (intraperitoneal injection or implantation of 15 larvae/animal) using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) until day 33 p.i. (IgM and IgG reaction) and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) combined with immunostaining (IgG reaction) until day 7 p.i. ELISA-determined IgM and IgG titres were significantly elevated from day 5 p.i. Immunostaining revealed early reactivity for certain ceramide tetra- and 〉tetrasaccharides (n=6) on day 3 p.i. From day 5 p.i. onwards, nearly all glycolipids, including ceramide mono-and disaccharides, were recognized by the sera from metacestode-challenged mice. On day 7 p.i., a total of 22 bands were serologically active; of these, a considerable number (n=10) showed increased staining intensity. Remarkably, in many cases (10 of 20), 3 glycolipids (tetra-and 〉tetrasaccharides) were weakly recognized by mouse sera taken before infection.
