Description: SummaryTwenty-four Friesian cows were allocated to one of four diets for weeks 3–14 of lactation following 2 weeks on a common diet. The diets (kg air-dry feed/day) were 7–2 kg hay and 10·8 kg either starchy or fibrous concentrates (60S and 60F) or 3·5 kg hay and 14·0 kg either starchy or fibrous concentrates (80S and 80F). Rumen samples were taken by stomach tube in weeks 10 and 12 of lactation and the digestibility of the diets was measured with four cows per treatment during weeks 13 and 14. The digestibility of the same feeds was also measured in sheep at maintenance. The principal carbohydrate constituents of the concentrates were barley, wheat and cassava in the starchy concentrates and citrus pulp, sugar-beet pulp and wheat feed in the fibrous concentrates. The concentrates were designed to have similar concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME) and the diets were planned to provide similar intakes of digestible energy and crude protein.Milk yield and composition were very similar for treatments 60S and 60F. With the higher proportion of starchy concentrates (80S), milk yield was about 20% greater than on 60S, fat concentration fell severely but protein and lactose concentrations were unaffected. With the higher proportion of fibrous concentrates (80F), milk yield and the protein and lactose concentration were similar to values on 60F but fat concentration was lower, though not nearly so low as on 80S. Milk energy yield was reduced by the higher proportion of concentrates but was unaffected by type of carbohydrates. Live-weight changes were small. In both the sheep, consuming at maintenance, and the lactating cows consuming at about 3 times maintenance, digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and energy was higher with the higher concentrate diets but was unaffected by type of concentrate. The digestibility of fibre was greater with the fibrous concentrates but the effect of level of concentrate inclusion was inconsistent. Digestibility coefficients were consistently lower for the lactating cows than for the sheep. The proportion of acetic acid in the rumen volatile fatty acids in the cows was higher and the proportion of propionic acid was lower with the fibrous concentrates. The differences were much greater with the higher proportion of concentrates.During weeks 15–22 of lactation the cows were reallocated to concentrate treatments and given hay ad libitum. Hay intake was about 1 kg/day higher with the fibrous concentrates but the difference was not significant. Hay intake fell by about 0·6 kg/kg concentrate intake for both concentrate types. No significant differences in milk yield or composition were established, probably because of incomplete adaptation even after 8 weeks. It is concluded that at concentrate intakes of about 10 kg/day, the source of carbohydrate in the concentrates has little effect on milk production when the concentrates are of similar ME concentration. However, at higher levels of concentrate inclusion, although the diets may have similar ME concentrations, important differences in the yields of fat, protein and lactose occur due to carbohydrate source and these can be related to differences in rumen fermentation.

Description: SummaryRelations between yield, water use and pre-anthesis growth were analysed for cropsof barley grown for three seasons at several sites in northern Syria. The relations obtained were compared with those for other cereal crops grown in similar regions of Mediterranean climates.Phosphorus fertilizer application increased the rate of crop development from emergence to floral initiation and advanced anthesis by up to 11 days. Grain and total shoot dry-matter yields were increased by fertilizer (nitrogen + phosphorus) applications at all sites in all years, in most cases without increasing total evapotranspiration. The increased dry matter at anthesis was produced without having used a larger proportion of the total evapotranspiration in the whole season. Consequently, the ratio of grain yield to total above-ground dry-matter yield (harvest index) and kernel weight were also relatively stable between sites and years, despite some very low amounts of post-anthesis water use. Grain yield appeared to be largely determined by anthesis and there were strong linear relationships between grain yield or total dry-matter yield and number of kernels. Differences in water use efficiency of crops given fertilizer between sites and years were closely related to the differences in amounts of winter growth. Some responses differed from those predicted from models of growth, water use and yield developed in other regions with similar climates. It is concluded that agronomists and breeders should increase amounts of early growth thereby increasing grain and dry-matter yields. Future research emphasis should also be on the development of dynamic simulation models of pre-anthesis growth and water use.

Description: A solution has been obtained for steady propagation of a two-dimensional fluid fracture driven by buoyancy in an elastic medium. The problem is formulated in terms of an integro-differential equation governing the elastic deformation, coupled with the differential equation of lubrication theory for viscous flow in the crack. The numerical treatment of this system is carried out in terms of an eigenfunction expansion of the cavity shape, in which the coefficients are found by use of a nonlinear constrained optimization technique. When suitably non-dimensionalized, the solution appears to be unique. It exhibits a semi-infinite crack of constant width following the propagating fracture. For each value of the stress intensity factor of the medium, the width and propagation speed are determined. The results are applied to the problem of the vertical ascent of magma through the earth's mantle and crust. Values obtained for the crack width and ascent velocity are in accord with observations. This mechanism can explain the high ascent velocities required to quench diamonds during a Kimberlite eruption. The mechanism can also explain how basaltic eruptions can carry large mantle rocks (xenoliths) to the surface. © 1987, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: Experiments on fluidization with water of spherical particles falling against gravity in columns of rectangular cross section are described. All of them are dominated by inertial effects associated with wakes. Two local mechanisms are involved: drafting and kissing and tumbling into stable cross stream arrays. Drafting, kissing and tumbling are rearrangement mechanisms in which one sphere is captured in the wake of the other. The kissing spheres are aligned with the stream. The streamwise alignment is massively unstable and the kissing spheres tumble into more stable cross stream pairs of doublets which can aggregate into larger relatively stable horizontal arrays. Cross stream arrays in beds of spheres constrained to move in two dimensions are remarkable. These arrays may even coalesce into aggregations of close packed spheres separated by regions of clear water. A somewhat weaker form of cooperative motion of cross stream arrays of rising spheres is found in beds of square cross section where the spheres may move freely in three dimensions. Horizontal arrays rise where drafting spheres fall because of greater drag. Aggregation of spheres seems to be associated with relatively stable cooperative motions of horizontal arrays of spheres rising in their own wakes. © 1987, Cambridge University Press. Description: The rhyolitic Lake Tapps tephra was deposited about 1.0 myr ago, shortly after culmination of the early phase of the Salmon Springs Glaciation in the Puget Lowland. It is contained within sediments that were deposited in ponds or lakes in front of the reteating glacier. An herb-dominated tundra existed in the southern Puget Lowland at that time. Lake Tapps tephra is most likely the product of an eruption that in part was phreatomagmatic. It forms an early Pleistocene stratigraphic marker across the southern sector of the Puget Lowland and provides a link between Puget lobe sediments of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet and sediments deposited by Olympic alpine glaciers.

Description: We consider the steady self-propagation with respect to the fluid at infinity of two equal symmetrically shaped vortices in a compressible fluid. Each vortex core is modelled by a region of stagnant constant-pressure fluid bounded by closed constant-pressure, constant-speed streamlines of unknown shape. The external flow is assumed to be irrotational inviscid isentropic flow of a perfect gas. The flow is therefore shock free but may be locally supersonic. The nonlinear free-boundary problem for the vortex-pair flow is formulated in the hodograph plane of compressible-flow theory, and a numerical solution method based on finite differences is described. Specific results are presented for a range of parameters which control the flow, namely the Mach number of the pair translational motion and the fluid speed on each vortex bounding streamline. Perturbation-theory predictions are developed, valid for vortices of small core radius when the pair Mach number is much less than unity. These are in good agreement with the hodograph-plane calculations. The numerical and the perturbation-theory results together confirm the recently discovered (Barsony-Nagy, Er-El & Yungster 1987) existence of continuous shock-free transonic compressible flows with embedded vortices. For the vortex-pair geometry studied, solution branches corresponding to physically acceptable flows that could be calculated using the present hodograph-plane numerical method were found to be terminated when either the flow on the streamline of symmetry separating the vortices tends to become superonic or when limiting lines appear in the hodograph plane giving a locally multivalued mapping to the physical plane. © 1987, Cambridge University Press. Description: SummaryIn a 2-year field study, all the maize cultivars tried (Partap-1 Ageti-76, Ganga-5 and DHM-103) produced similar length of ears and equivalent grain yields. However, Partap-1 and Ganga-5 produced greater 100-kernel weight and greater grain yield per ear but fewer ears per hectare than Ageti-76 and DHM-103. The yield attributes and grain yields of maize sown on 19 December, 29 December and 8 January were identical and were superior to those of the 19 January sowing. Maize sown on 19 December, 29 December and 8 January exhibited longer ears, more ears and fully developed kernels and thereby produced greater grain yields than the 18 January sowing.During 1983–4, in the 19 December and 29 December sowings all the cultivars gave identical grain yields. In the 8 January sowing Partap-1 and Ageti-76 produced similar yields and proved better than Ganga-5 and DHM-103. In the 18 January sowing Ageti-76, Ganga-5 and DHM-103 yielded more than Partap-1.

Description: SummaryThe effect of oestradiol-17β on the response to fishmeal supplementation of grass silage was studied in young growing cattle. Voluntary intake and live-weight gain were recorded over 63 days with 36 British Friesian male castrates (initial live weight (LW) 119 kg) offered silage alone (C) or with 50 (FM1), 100 (FM2), or 150 (FM3) g fishmeal/kg silage dry matter. Twelve calves were allocated to each of treatments C and FM3 and six to treatments FM1 and FM2. Half of the calves on each treatment were ear-implanted with oestradiol-17β (Compudose 365) at the start of the experiment. The calves on treatments C and FM3 were slaughtered after 75 days and chemical analysis conducted on half of each carcass. The silage had an organic-matter digestibility in vivo of 0·794 and was well-fermented, with a pH of 3·7. Intake averaged 24·2±0·42 g D.M./kg LW over all the treatments and live-weight gain was 0·77 kg/day on the silage alone. There was a significant (P 〈 0·05) interaction between fishmeal and oestradiol-17β, such that response to the hormone was observed only in the presence of fishmeal at 100 or 150 g/kg silage D.M. A similar interaction was apparent between fishmeal at 150 g/kg silage D.M. and oestradiol-17β in the final weights of empty body and carcass. This level of fishmeal also increased protein gain from 96 to 147 g/day and this was further increased to 179 g/day in the implanted animals receiving fishmeal. However, the overall effect of oestradiol-17β on protein gain was not significant. Gross efficiency of energy utilization was significantly (P 〈 0·01) increased by fishmeal supplementation suggesting an improved balance of nutrients compared with the silage alone diet.

Description: SummaryFlowers were present over a period of approximately 6 weeks in 12 varieties of oil-seed rape. A linear relationship was found between flower cover (maximum 74%) and photon reflectivity (400–700 nm) which increased from around 0·047 during vegetative growth to 0·195 for a canopy in full flower. Reflexion and absorption of photons by flowers reduced light available to the leaf canopy and immature pods. Spectral measurements indicate that flowering canopies reflect substantially more radiation and absorb less than vegetative canopies between 500 and 700 nm but reflect less and absorb slightly more between 400 and 500 nm.Seed yield was not strongly correlated with estimates of the radiation absorbed by the leaf canopy under the flower layer. It appears that whilst increased flower density in a canopy might be expected to contribute to increased seed yield, increased reflectivity by petals may have a negative effect on yield. Breeding for reduced petal size or for apetalous lines may result in improved yields by producing more efficient light distribution within the canopy.
