    Notes: A mosaic of short, frequently grazed areas and tall, infrequently grazed areas is a characteristic of swards continuously stocked with cattle. Inclined point quadrat measurements were used to compare sward structure on the frequently and infrequently grazed areas in an experiment on mixed grass/clover swards with beef cattle, in which the swards were maintained at overall mean rising-plate target heights of 3·0, 5·5 or 7·0 cm. The results demonstrate large within treatment differences in the vertical distribution of plant parts between the frequently and infrequently grazed areas, and smaller differences within these areas between treatments. The consequences of these observations and the need for greater effort in recording the detailed structure within these areas in grazing experiments is noted.

    Notes: An experiment was carried out to examine the changes in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) populations in mixed swards, under different grazing severities over three successive grazing seasons. In year 1, three paddocks were erected on a sward with a low initial content of clover (block 1). Sward heights were measured using a rising-plate meter, and were maintained at overall mean heights of 3·0, 5·5 or 7·0 cm by variable stocking with 8-month-old steers. In year 2, a further three paddocks were erected on an adjacent area with a high initial content of clover (block 2), and were maintained at the same three heights by similar management. Botanical analyses were carded out on samples collected at four times during the season. Maintaining swards at 5·5 or 7·0 cm led to a large proportion of the area being infrequently grazed. Block I paddocks had higher initial tiller densities, which increased as sward height was reduced, while block 2 paddocks, with their lower initial tiller density, showed little effect of sward height on tiller density. Initially, clover stolon growing-point densities and stolon masses increased more rapidly in the taller swards. Later, however, large losses in the clover populations occurred on all paddocks during long wet winters and there was a general reversal in these trends for stolon growing-point densities and stolon masses, 3·0〉5·5〉7·0.     Notes: An experiment was designed to examine the changes in clover content of three mixed perennial ryegrass/white cover swards of differing initial clover contents subjected to different grazing height management regimes and their effect on lactation performance of 48 Friesian dairy cows and heifers. Two paddocks were established for each treatment and grazed on alternate days. Treatments T17 and Tl3 consisted of swards with initial clover contents of 0·17 and 0·13 of the dry matter (DM) mass, respectively, grazed to maintain compressed sward heights of 6 cm throughout the season. A third treatment, SI5, consisted of a sward with an initial clover content of 0·15 grazed to maintain a compressed sward height of 4·5 cm for the first 78 days of the grazing season (period 1). Throughout period 1, half the animals on each treatment each received 4 kg of a concentrate supplement daily, while the others remained unsupplemented. From days 79 to 90, the cattle on treatment S15 grazed a similar sward, while the compressed sward height of the S15 paddocks was allowed to increase to 6 cm before re introduction of the animals. The three swards were then grazed for a further 47 days (period 2) before the animals were housed and milk yield recorded for a further 63 days (period 3). While sward T17 showed little change in clover content over the first 29 days of grazing, remaining at just below 0·18 of DM mass, swards T13 and S15 showed a marked decline in clover content to 0·05 and 0·07 of DM mass respectively. However, by the end of period 1 the clover content of all three swards had increased markedly (0·25, 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass respectively). By the end of period 2, clover proportions were slightly higher than initial values (0·19. 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass for treatments T17, T13 and S15, respectively). Owing to the relatively small differences in clover content of swards TI7 and T13, there were no significant effects of these two treatments on milk yield or composition in any period. Supplementation had no effect on milk composition and had little effect on milk yield, except when sward height was maintained at 4·5 cm. There was no carryover effect of supplementation on milk yield or composition in periods 2 or 3.

    Notes: An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of time of day on the rate of intake of herbage by grazing dairy cows. Eight unsupplemented Holstein Friesian cows in their fourth month of lactation grazed grass swards maintained at a sward surface height of 6·5 cm. Commencing at 07.00, 11.30, 16.00 and 19.00 h, intake rates were estimated by measuring the liveweight change, corrected for insensible weight loss, over a period of 1 h while grazing. During the period of grazing, recordings of jaw movement activity were made to determine total eating time, number of grazing jaw movements (GJMs) and bites. Total eating time over 24 h was measured: once before and once after determination of intake rate.Although time of day did not affect GJM rate, it had a quadratic effect on the proportion of GJMs represented by biting and non-biting jaw movements, resulting in a significant effect on bite rate. Bite rate showed a quadratic effect of time, decreasing between 07.00 and 11.30 h, and then increasing by 16.00 h to reach a maximum at 19.00 h (52·6, 47·5, 51·6 and 59·4 bites min−1 respectively). Bite mass (mg fresh matter bite−1) was greatest at 07.00 h because of the lower dry-matter (DM) content of the herbage and the presence of surface moisture at that time, but the effect of time of day was not significant. Mean bite mass measured as DM or organic matter (OM) differed significantly between the different times of day (332, 384, 481 and 402 mg DM and 302, 348, 438 and 367 mg OM bite−1 respectively). The net result of these differences in bite rate and bite mass was a linear increase in DM and OM intake rate over the day. The magnitude of such differences will have profound effects on mean daily intakes when calculated as the product of total eating time and intake rate.

    Notes: Herbage heights were measured with a rising plate meter in mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens) swards maintained under five different systems of management. Double normal distributions fitted to the height frequencies were used to interpret changes over the grazing season in the mean heights of the shorter ‘frequently’ and the taller ‘infrequently’ grazed components of the sward, the variability of height within the two components, and the proportions of the two components in the sward. An attempt was also made to demonstrate that the overlap of these components, implicit in fitting double normal distributions, is a true reflection of the height distributions of frequently and infrequently grazed areas of the sward, and that the fitting of such a distribution provides a useful estimate of the proportion of a sward which is infrequently grazed.

    Notes: Herbage height was measured in ryegrass/white clover (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens) swards grazed by cattle using the rising plate meter or the sward stick. Ordinary single normal and double normal distributions were fitted to the data obtained. After the first 6 weeks of continuous grazing the double normal distributions fitted data for the taller swards better than the single normal distribution did, but for a short sward there was no improvement. There was no improvement due to the use of the double normal distribution with data for swards grazed by sheep.

    Notes: An experiment was carried out to examine the effect of supplementation on the performance of spring-calving dairy cows grazing swards of differing perennial ryegrass and white clover content. Seventeen heifers and sixty-four Friesian cows in their third to ninth week of lactation were turned out onto one of three pastures with different proportions of perennial ryegrass and white clover. Nine animals on each pasture received either 0, 2 or 4 kg d−1 of a concentrate with a crude protein concentration of 180 g kg−1 dry matter (DM). Prior to grazing, swards contained proportionately 0·01 (L), 0·15 (M) and 0·20 (H) of total DM as clover. During the experiment, grazing pressures were adjusted by movement of buffer fences to maintain compressed sward heights at 6 cm. Samples taken 26 and 68 d after the start of grazing showed little change in the proportion of clover in sward L (〈 0·01 and 0·02 respectively), but convergence in the proportion of clover in swards M and L (0·08-0·16 and 0·10-0·15 respectively). Mean daily yields of milk, fat, protein and lactose increased significantly with increased clover content and, even without supplementation, daily yields were 25·4, 0·98, 0·73 and 1·09 kg respectively on sward H. Of the milk components, only protein was significantly increased by increasing sward clover content. The response in milk yield to supplementation was greater on sward L than on swards M and H.

    Notes: The effect of sward surface height (SSH) on grazing behaviour and intake by lactating Holstein Friesian cows on continuously stocked grass pastures maintained at mean heights of 5, 7 and 9 cm was studied during the growing season. Intake rate was estimated over periods of 1 h by weighing animals before and after grazing, with a correction made for insensible weight loss. Grazing behaviour during that hour and over 24 h was recorded automatically using sensors to measure jaw movements.Although maintained at the overall mean SSH, swards had a patchy appearance with short, frequently grazed areas interspersed with taller, infrequently grazed areas, which is typical of pastures continuously stocked with cattle. Daily organic matter (OM) intake, calculated as the product of daily grazing time and intake rate, was greater at a SSH of 7 cm than at 5 or 9 cm (14·1 vs. 10·5 and 12·1 kg respectively). On the 5-cm sward, OM intake per grazing jaw movement (GJM) was reduced compared with that on the 7-cm sward (0·182 vs. 0·264 g respectively), and because cows were unable either to increase significantly GJM rate (95·8 vs. 90·1 GJM min−1) or the proportion of GJM that were bites (0·80 vs. 0·81) OM intake rate was reduced (16·9 vs. 23·5 g min−1). Cows were unable to increase their grazing time significantly (628 vs. 604 min d−1) to compensate for the reduction in intake rate, and as a result daily intakes were lower. Cows grazing the 9-cm sward also incurred a reduction in OM intake GJM−1 compared with those on the 7-cm sward (0·237 vs. 0·264 g respectively) and therefore there was a reduction in OM intake rate (21·6 vs. 23·5 g min−1). These animals did not compensate by increasing the time spent grazing (581 min d−1), probably owing to an increased ruminating requirement per kg of herbage ingested compared with those on 7 cm SSH (2264 vs. 1780 ruminating jaw movements respectively). The results show that SSH can significantly influence intake rate, but, while the cow's only effective strategy to compensate for any reduction in intake rate is to increase grazing time, this may be limited by the requirement for ruminating and non-grazing, non-ruminating activities, which is influenced by qualitative and quantitative aspects of the herbage ingested, whereas the cows' only effective strategy to compensate for any reduction in intake rate is to increase grazing time.

    Notes: During an experiment in which the height of mixed perennial ryegrass/while clover swards was maintained throughout the season at 3 or 7 cm (S and T, respectively), or were maintained al those heights until 30 June then changed (ST and TS), a limited study was made of the effects on the population densities and masses of the two species. During the earlier part of the season the short swards (S and ST) developed higher tiller and stolon growing point (sgp) densities, but with a reduced mass of ryegrass, principally of the pseudostem fraction, than the tail swards (T and TS). Thiere was little effect of sward height on the mass of clover. Whilst there was a general tendency for tiller and sgp densities to increase during the latter part of the season, tiller density increased greatly where sward height was reduced (TS) and both tiller and sgp densities were reduced where sward height was allowed to increase (ST). Changing sward height, whilst limiting the accumulation of dead grass material (TS), allowed grass leaf and dead masses to increase (ST), and adversely affected the increase in the clover component, principally of stolon material, in both ST and TS.

    Description: SUMMARYThe effect of herbage allowance on the intake and performance of Scottish Half bred ewes with twin lambs was investigated over the first 16 weeks of lactation. Herbage allowances were defined as g herbage D.M./kg live weight (LW)/day, and were maintained by provision of fresh areas of ungrazed sward each day.Herbage allowances in the range 25–120 g D.M./kg LW/day were offered on an area of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv. S. 23). Parturition was synchronized and ewes and lambs were turned out to pasture 1 day after lambing.Measurements were made of the herbage intake, live-weight change and milk yield of ewes, of lamb growth rates and of the herbage intake of lambs from 10 weeks of age.Herbage allowance had a significant linear effect on intakes of grass by ewes and lambs. The highest intakes by the ewes were achieved during the second week, and were in the range 23–43 g OM/kg LW/day. Intakes declined, as lactation proceeded, to 19–29 g OM/kg LW/day at week 12. Intakes of lambs were similar in weeks 10 and 12 and were in the range 17–24 g OM/kg LW/day. Allowance had a significant effect on live-weight change of the ewes after the first month and upon final body condition.There was no effect of allowance on milk yield until week 6. Mean milk yields were 2·3 kg/day at day 14, 1·0–1·5 kg/day at day 42 and 0·7–1·1 kg/day at day 84. There was a positive effect of allowance on growth rates of the lambs after the first month. Mean overall growth rates to 84 days of age were 175–243 g/day.
