    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract With AWPS (Amplitude Weighted Phase Structuration), a new signal processing scheme is demonstrated for the simultaneous determination of zeta potentials and particle sizes. It allows the measurements of a small electrophoretic mobility in the presence of large particle diffusion and constant velocity, e. g. due to thermal convection. Laser light scattering techniques instead of the former methods determine electrophoretic velocity more objectively and precisely. The applicability of laser measurement techniques by analysis of the frequency spectrum is limited for particles ≪50 nm or very low potentials, because of the broadening of the spectral peak by Brownian motion. In contrast to AWPS a separation of the various kinds of collective motion is not possible. The presented results demonstrate that this separation is of considerable significance in the acquisition of reliable values. Additionally the novel signal processing scheme allows a significant increase in sensitivity and therefore the application of an oscillating field (50–100 Hz) with a very small field strength. The system is feasible for particle sizes in the range of a few nm up to several μm. Its high resolution allows experiments with low fields or with small zeta potentials, even in the critical particles size range of a few nanometers.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Mit AWPS (Amplitudengewichteter Phasenstrukturation) wird ein neues Signalverarbeitungssystem zur gleichzeitigen Bestimmung von Zetapotential und Partikelgröße vorgestellt. Es erlaubt die Messung geringer elektrophoretischer Beweglichkeiten in Gegenwart einer starken Diffusion der Partikel sowie einer überlagerten konstanten Geschwindigkeit, z. B. aufgrund eines Konvektionssthermes. Laserstreulichtverfahren anstatt der bisherigen Methoden bestimmen die elektrophoretische Geschwindigkeit objektiver und präziser. Die Anwendbarkeit der Lasertechniken, die über die Analyse des Frequenzspektrums arbeiten, ist begrenzt für Partikel ≪s50 nm oder sehr niedrige Potentiale, aufgrund der Verbreiterung des spektralen Peaks durch die Diffusionsbewegung. Im Gegensatz zu AWPS ist eine Auftrennung in die verschiedenen Komponenten der kollektiven Bewegung nicht möglich. Die vorgelegten Ergebnisse belegen, daß diese Auftrennung von beträchtlicher Bedeutung ist, um verläßliche Werte zu erhalten. Das neue Signalverarbeitungssystem ermöglicht zusätzlich einen bedeutenden Zuwachs an Empfindlichkeit und daher die Anwendung eines oszillierenden Feldes (50–100 Hz) mit sehr geringer Feldstärke. Das System ist anwendbar für Partikelgrößen im Bereich von wenigen nm bis zu einigen μm. Seine hohe Auflösung ermöglicht Experimente mit kleinen Feldern oder mit niedrigen Zetapotentialen, besonders im kritischen Teilchengrößenbereich von einigen Nanometern.

    Notes: Summary Chronic treatment of rats with reserpine, isoproterenol, or a combination of these two agents has been suggested as a means to produce an experimental animal model for the chronic exocrinopathy cystic fibrosis. The effect of these treatments on glycoconjugate distribution in rat submandibular gland acinar cells was investigated by quantitative lectin cytochemistry. Significant changes in wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), soy bean agglutinin (SBA) and concanavalin A (Con A) binding sites in the mucus granules were observed, but peanut agglutinin (PNA) binding was not significantly affected. The quantitative changes in glycoconjugates in the acinar cells of the submandibular gland could be a possible explanation for the increased binding of calcium by the intracellular mucus noted in previous studies on these animal models.

    Notes: Abstract The long-time (t=10–200 h) heat release $$\dot Q$$ from glasses, from organic materials, and from Nb-Ti-H (D) was measured at 30≤T≤70 mK. For Suprasil W glass, Dimethyl-Siloxan, Stycast 1266, Stycast 2850 FT, Vespel, and for Nb-Ti-H (D) with various Ti and D concentrations, we found $$\dot Q \sim t^{ - 1}$$ . Typical values are $$\dot Q$$ = 0.05 nW/g for the organic materials and for Nb-Ti-H (D) and $$\dot Q$$ = 0.005 nW/g for the glass att=100 h after cooldown from room temperature. For charging temperaturesT i 〈5 K, we find the predicted dependence $$\dot Q \sim t_i^2$$ (investigated for Suprasil W glass and for Nb-Ti-D). The observed time and temperature dependences agree with predictions of the conventional two-level tunneling model for amorphous materials even at these very long times. No heat release was observed for Teflon, graphite, and Al2O3.

    Notes: Abstract The results are presented of a systematic study of the influence of temperature, time, pressure, and atmosphere during pretreatment and sintering on the surface area, packing factor, structure, hardness, mechanical contact to a foil, and electrical conductivity of sinter produced from 900-Å Cu powder. Conditions for the reproducible production of sinter with high surface area (2–3 m2/g) and good conductivity (ρ300=10–15 µΩ-cm andR 300/R4.2≈3) are determined.

    Notes: Abstract The design, construction, and performance of a Cu nuclear refrigerator are reported. The first nuclear stage (total 275 moles Cu with 104 moles Cu in 8 T) has refrigerated a195Pt NMR thermometer in the low-field experimental region to 15 µK; it can keep experiments below 20 µK for more than 1 week. It can alternatively precool a second nuclear stage (2 moles Cu in 9 T). Demagnetizing this stage has resulted in a temperature of at most 12 µK as measured by another195Pt NMR thermometer attached to the stage. The details of the thermometry are described and possible origins of the observed internal heat leaks as well as unexpected contributions to the specific heat of the nuclear stages are discussed.

Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of head-injured patients reveals that the concentration of intraventricular xanthine is elevated and that of uridine is decreased relative to those of adult lumbar CSF. 2. No correlations were observed between CSF lactate and CSF hypoxanthine, xanthine, or uridine, suggesting that changes in purine metabolites and the pyrimidine nucleoside do not index similar cellular events as does lactic acid production. 3. Ventricular CSF from hydrocephalic infants had uridine and hypoxanthine concentrations not significantly different from those of normal adult lumbar CSF, but xanthine was significantly elevated. 4. Since uridine has anticonvulsant properties and is a crucial substrate for cerebral metabolism, it may be useful to evaluate this pyrimidine for use in the management of patients with head injury.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wir analysieren die Komplexität von eingeschränkten Linear Arrangement Problemen, bei denen nur solche Permutationen der Knoten erlaubt sind, die durch die Ordnung eines die Knoten des Graphen strukturierenden, binären Baumes — des sogenannten P-tress — entstehen. Derartige Versionen von Linear Arrangement Problemen tauchen an mehreren Stellen in heutigen Schaltkreis Layout Systemen auf. Der P-tree resultiert dabei aus einem rekursiven Zerteiluungsprozeß des Graphen. Wir zeigen, daß das MINCUT LINEAR ARRANGEMENT und das OPTIMAL LINEAR ARRANGEMENT Problem in polynomieller Zeit lösbar sind, wenn der P-tree balanciert ist. Alle anderen betrachteten Versionen von Linear Arrangement Problemen sind NP-vollständig.
    Notes: Abstract We analyze the complexity of the restrictions of linear arrangement problems that are obtained if the legal permutations of the nodes are restricted to those that can be obtained by orderings of a binary tree structuring the nodes of the graph, the so-called p-tree. These versions of the linear arrangement problems occur in several places in current circuit layout systems. There the p-tree is the result of a recursive partitioning process of the graph. We show that the MINCUT LINEAR ARRANGEMENT problem and the OPTIMAL LINEAR ARRANGEMENT problem can be solved in polynomial time, if the p-tree is balanced. All other versions of the linear arrangement problems we analyzed are NP-complete.
