Notes: Polyperfluorobut-2-yne is prepared by a fluoride ion-induced polymerization of hexafluorobut-2-yne. The mass spectrum indicates a regular fragmentation pattern but the ESCA spectrum establishes the structure as a polyene, rather than a crosslinked system, and the occurrence of a shake-up peak assists in this assignment.

Notes: The effects of various polyolefin photostabilizers on the thermal and photodecomposition of model and polymeric hydroperoxides have been investigated, both in the liquid and solid phases. Several extremely effective ultraviolet stabilizers belonging to the metal chelate class can cause the rapid thermal decomposition of model and polymeric hydroperoxides. Although stabilizers did not reduce the quantum yield for polypropylene hydroperoxide photolysis, several additives can scavenge hydroxyl and macroalkoxy radical products which result from hydroperoxide photolytic cleavage. Ultraviolet stabilizers which were found to trap radicals were able to prevent the photodegradation of polypropylene which already contained a significant concentration of hydroperoxide groups. Highly effective polypropylene ultraviolet stabilizers probably operate by a range of mechanisms including hydroperoxide decomposition, radical scavenging and singlet oxygen quenching.

Notes: The equilibrium and kinetics of gas sorption by a silicone rubber filled with highly adsorptive molecular sieves was studied. Sorption in this system is by two mechanisms: gas is simply dissolved in the polymer matrix according to Henry's law, while it is adsorbed by the dispersed sieve phase in accordance with a Langmuir's isotherm. The latter effectively immobilizes the gas molecules preventing their further diffusion. All equilibrium parameters were determined experimentally. Immobilization greatly affects sorption kinetics and renders conventional analyses invalid. A theory to account for this process was adapted from a previous analysis by Vieth and Sladek which assumes that the kinetics of adsorption is very fast compared to diffusion. For this situation the kinetics always assume a Fickean form. The experimental data agreed very well with the predictions of this theory in a comparison where all parameters were defined by independent experiments. It was found that a single effective diffusion coefficient describes sorption kinetics, steady-state permeation, and time-lag results once the effects of immobilization are properly accounted for.

Description: The present work proposes a general rule relating the polarity of broad-band (spectral range: 5250 A to 5350 A) circular polarization fields observed in sunspots to that of the corresponding magnetic fields. The rule is illustrated with observations of particular spots.

Description: Solar wind plasma and magnetic field measurements from Pioneers 9 and 10 during August 2-17, 1972, reveal complex and large-amplitude variations on a one-hour time scale and numerous discontinuities. During this time period an approximate radial alignment of the two spacecraft as seen from the Sun occurred with heliocentric distances of 0.8 AU for Pioneer 9 and 2.2 AU for Pioneer 10, both at 45 deg east of the Earth's solar longitude. The peak hourly average solar wind proton bulk velocity measured at Pioneer 9 was 990 km sec (exp -1) during hour 0 UT of August 5. The peak hourly average proton number density was 62 cm (exp -3) during hour 11 UT of August 3. The peak solar wind speeds are generally much reduced at Pioneer 10 compared with those observes at Pioneer 9. The peak 30 minute average magnetic field magnitude was 85 gamma during 1245 - 1315 UT of August 3. The Pioneer 9 data indicate passage of four fast forward interplanetary shocks, and one slow forward interplanetary shock.

Notes: Two series of monodisperse polystyrenes have been prepared with a molecular weight range of 3,000 to 300,000. One series was lightly substituted with dimethylbenzylamine groups, the other with 2,6 dinitro-4-benzoyloxyphenol groups. Members of each series were dissolved together in benzene solution in the range of 0.1-30%, and the equilibrium constant for the formation of the ammonium phenolate ion pair measured. Also measured was the corresponding equilibrium constant between comparable small molecular weight analogs, and between these analogs and the substituted polymers. The degree of association found between the models and between the models and the polymers was independent of molecular weight, but deviations were found in the polymer-polymer interaction. Normal equilibrium constants were found at high polymer concentrations indicating that chain interpenetration occurred freely. At low concentrations of polymer, if several links per chain were possible it was found an excess of linkages were formed. If only one link per chain was possible, low degrees of association were found for high molecular weight polymers, but the effect was not as large as a consideration of excluded volumes on a spherical model would predict.

Notes: The relative availabilities of hydroxyl groups at C(2), C(3), and C(6) on the D-glucopyranosyl units of a particular, highly ordered hydrocellulose II have been studied by means of the reaction of N,N-diethylaziridinium chloride, which introduces 2-(diethyl-amino)ethyl substituents. The hydrocellulose II was formed by hydrolysis of fibrous cotton cellulose II during 40 min reflux in 2.5M hydrochloric acid and is designated EHC-II (exemplar hydrocellulose II) because it represents the most highly ordered (crystalline) particles in a series of hydrocelluloses. The deviation in the distribution of substituents among the 2-O-, 3-O-, and 6-O- positions of the D-glucopyranosyl units in EHC-II from that in a disordered cellulose, in which the three types of hydroxyl groups are equally available, is the basis for estimated availabilities of the three types of hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of elementary fibrils in EHC-II. The experimental values of relative availabilities of O(2)H:O(3)H:O(6)H for EHC-II were 1.0:0.26:0.72 compared to estimated values of 1.0:0.0:.075 for surfaces of elementary fibrils of an idealized, perfectly ordered cellulose II, a model that is based on intensities of x-ray diffraction peaks.

Notes: Polymers with fluoroalkyl side-groups on three of every four carbon atoms along the polymer main chain were made by treating 1 : 1 copolymers of perfluoroallyl (or methallyl)ethers and maleic anhydride with SF4, and then esterifying the resulting acid fluoride groups with 1H, 1H-pentadecafluorooctanol. Surface wettability of these polymers by polar and non-polar liquids was studied. The critical surface tension (γc) was found by Zisman's method. The dispersion force component of polymer surface energy (γsD) and the polar component of surface energy (γsp) were calculated by the respective methods of Fowkes and Owens. The γc values for several of the highly fluorinated polymers were lower than previously reported for any fluoropolymer but not so low as has been observed for the surface of an oriented perfluoroacid monolayer. In the range 11.4-18.5 dyne/cm, γc approximates γsD for the fluorinated surfaces; however at lower γc values, considerable difference between γc and γsD was noted.
