    Notes: Abstract  The accumulation of heavy metals and trace elements has been investigated in a well laminated sequence of Holocene and late Pleistocene lake sediments composed of diatomaceous gyttja, tuff and silt and clay sediments. Varve chronology of the annually deposited gyttja yielded a continuous high-resolution time sequence and allowed the absolute age dating of the sediment. Fluxes of elements remained largely uniform from the late Pleistocene into the Holocene (12 867–2 364 VT years ago; VT: varve time, years before 1950). Higher trace element and heavy metal fluxes occur from 2 322 to 862 VT years ago and reached their maxima in the uppermost sediments (〈845 VT years ago). These increasing element fluxes correlate with increasing inputs of clastic material. The changing accumulation rates are the result of elevated soil erosion in the lake catchment caused by human settlement, deforestation and agricultural activities. Thus disturbances of the natural geochemical cycles of the Holzmaar region have occurred since the beginning of the Iron Age and especially since the beginning of the Middle Ages.

    Notes: Abstract A minerogeniclayer occurs in early postglacial organic sediments from five maar lakes (West Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany). The mineralogy and stratigraphic position of this tephra suggests that it is related to the youngest German volcano, Ulmener Maar, nearby. Radiocarbon dating of wood from the base of the Ulmener Maar Tephra at two locations provide ages in agreement with an accelerator mass spectrometer 14C date for the minerogenic layer from sediments of Lake Holzmaar situated 13 km south-west of Ulmener Maar. The mean radiocarbon age is 9 560 years BP. Dating by varve chronology provides an age of 10017 years VT (varve time in years before 1950) or 10 895 years corrected VT. Based on palynology the Ulmener Maar Tephra was deposited at the end of the Preboreal. High values of natural remnant magnetization intensity, typical of pyroclastic material, confirm that this minerogenic layer differs in composition from other clastic deposits of the sedimentary record. Geochemical analyses reveal increased values of total trace elements for the Laacher See Tephra and Ulmener Maar Tephra. An isopach map based on thickness variations of the Ulmener Maar Tephra at five investigated maar lakes indicates that the tephra was mainly transported to the south west.

    Notes: Abstract Annually laminated sediments from Lake Holzmaar (Germany) provide high resolution sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental data of the last 22,500 years. Weichselian periglacial varves and Holocene organic varves indicate different depositional environments. For the best preserved sections from both parts, spectral analyses were performed in order to detect cyclic fluctuations in varve thickness. Weichselian varves are dominated by an 88 year periodicity. Linear spectral analysis of Holocene varves provides no significant cyclicity. But, supposing nonlinear transformations of the solar signal through the Lake Holzmaar ecosystem during the Holocene, an adequate nonlinear spectral analysis method was able to detect periodicities of 11, 88, and 208 years. The existence of these cyclicities, comparable to the solar activity fluctuations, give further evidence for the existence of a sun-climate relationship, based on a not yet completely understood mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract A high-resolution pollen and diatom stratigraphy has been studied from late-glacial annually laminated sediments of Holzmaar (425 m a.s.l., Germany). The sediment sequence studied comprises 475 varves and includes two environmental perturbations of different type and duration: the short, abrupt deposition of the late Allerød tephra layer of the Laacher See volcano (LST, 11 000 yr B.P.), and the more gradual onset of the 'Younger Dryas climatic cooling. Numerical analyses involving (partial) redundancy analyses in connection with Monte Carlo permutation tests suggest that the deposition of 78 mm of Laacher See Tephra had a statistically significant effect on the pollen stratigraphy (percentage and accumulation rates), most probably because of the proximity of the site to the volcano. The diatom accumulation rates also show a statistically significant change, whereas the diatom percentage data do not change significantly. The between-sample rates-of-change in both biostratigraphies are higher at and just after the LST event than at the transition to the Younger Dryas biozone. Sequence splitting of pollen and diatom accumulation rate data also shows a clustering of significant splits at the LST event. A close correlation between changes in the pollen and diatom percentage data for the investigated time-interval suggests a common underlying climatic signal, whereas the accumulation rates of both biostratigraphies behave more individualistically and show more short-term variability due, in part, to the inherent noise in the two data sets. Variance partitioning shows that the local pollen and diatom assemblage zones explain much of the variance in the data-sets. Statistical modelling using redundancy analysis shows that the changes in the diatom assemblages are best predicted by the Younger Dryas biozone and the main changes in the pollen stratigraphy (as represented by the first PCA axis of the pollen data). The results suggest that the biostratigraphies studied at Holzmaar reflect generally stable systems which were disturbed by the deposition of the Laacher See Tephra. After a phase of recovery both systems again reached a new phase of stability prior to the long-term Younger Dryas climatic deterioration that perturbed the assemblages again. The very close and statistically significant parallelism between the major stratigraphical patterns in the pollen and diatom percentage data highlights the responses of the two biological systems to environmental perturbations at different temporal scales.

    Notes: Abstract A comprehensive study of meteorological, hydrological, limnological and sedimentological conditions in the watersheds of density-stratified (meromictic) lakes around Taconite Inlet, Northern Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., Canada was carried out from 1990–1992. Lakes C1 and C2 contain seawater ‘trapped’ by isostatic uplift as the former embayments became isolated from the sea. These lakes, and Lake C3, contain varved sediments which provide an annually resolvable paleoclimatic record. By studing the major systems influencing sedimentation in one of these lakes (Lake C2) a better understanding of the climatic controls on varve formation, and hence on the paleoclimatic signal in the varved sediment record, was obtained. The varves of Lake C2 provide a proxy record of summer temperature for the region.

    Description: The causes for the rise of atmospheric CO 2 during the last deglaciation are complex and remain a matter of controversial scientific discussion. One hypothesis explains this phenomenon with CO 2 release from the deep ocean. A change in atmosphere-ocean interaction induced by a shift or intensification of Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHW) could have stimulated this process. Here this hypothesis is tested using oxygen isotope ratios of aquatic cellulose from Patagonian lacustrine sediments as west-wind proxy. Our record indicates maximum SHW strength at 52°S between 13.4 and 11.3 calibrated kyr B.P. This is in agreement with an increase in zonal wind strength extending to the southern mid-latitudes during the Younger Dryas chronozone triggering the final CO 2 increase. Comparison with other Southern Hemisphere records implies southward migration of strengthened SHW at that time, leading to interglacial CO 2 levels and hence terminating the Last Glacial.

    Description: Lake sediments are excellent sources of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic information because they provide continuous and high-resolution records. South America is of particular interest because it is the only landmass that stretches southward into the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans towards Antarctica. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship of magnetic parameters with elemental and palaeobiological data of Laguna Potrok Aike to develop a model of lake-level changes and related hydrological and climatic fluctuations. Magnetic measurements were performed on subsamples from 15 500 cal. BP to the present, and associated rock magnetic parameters were calculated to infer magnetic mineralogy, concentration and grain size. According to the model, parameters dependent on magnetic concentration and grain size are directly related to lake-level changes. During dry periods, the remanent coercivity displays high values, whereas the proportion of magnetite is relatively low. Low percentages of greigite are observed, indicating that the water of the lake was stratified at least four times during the studied period, at approximately 10 300, 8900, 8500 and 8300 cal. BP. The preservation of greigite by inhibiting its complete transformation into pyrite is associated with a rapid burial that occurs with high sedimentation rates. Thermal stratification could be caused by a slight cooling in the area triggered by a weakening of the Westerlies and/or low activity of the sun, sum to the effect of a flood of melt water in the North Atlantic.

    Description: A series of long sediment cores was retrieved from Laguna Potrok Aike, Southern Patagonia, within the framework of PASADO (Potrok Aike Maar Lake Sediment Archive Drilling Project), an ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) lake drilling project. This maar lake, located at 52°S, 70°W in the Province of Santa Cruz (Argentina), in the southernmost continental area of the world, is one of the few permanent lakes in the region, providing a unique continuous paleoclimatic and paleoecological lacustrine record for the last glacial cycle. Previous multiproxy studies of this site have characterized the environmental history of these dry lands in the Patagonian Steppe for the last 16 cal. ka BP. This new series of sediment cores provides a much longer record of climate variability in Southern Patagonia since 51.3 cal. ka BP. Using a multiproxy strategy, a set of samples (mostly from core catcher material) was analyzed for physical properties, rock magnetism, geochemistry, CNS elemental analysis, stable isotopes, pollen and diatoms. This preliminary multiproxy limnogeological interpretation sheds new light on the regional Pleistocene and Holocene environmental history, revealing lake-level variations through time and identifying time windows of interest where higher resolution analyses will be carried out.
