Description / Table of Contents: The Issue of Jobs versus the Environment and Research Question -- Principles: Landscape Ecology and Total Human Ecosystem -- Design Scenario: Formation and Coevolution -- Proposal Evaluation: Conclusion and Critique.
Abstract: This book applies the Total Human Ecosystem as a guiding concept in coastal urban communities to achieve a mutually beneficial relationship between industrial parks and their surrounding wetlands. The early 21st century has been shaped by a need for economic recovery, and by climate change. Consequently, new development models that promote both economic growth and environmental preservation are urgently needed. In turn, the book puts forward an innovative proposal to achieve the shift from a hard path to a soft path through landscape architectural interventions, one that will help industrial factories and their surrounding wetlands coevolve toward sustainability. Through the incorporation of science and design, the proposal for the Total Human Ecosystem on Blakeley Island integrates industry with its surrounding environment. The design scenarios for this new living system are based on scientific principles of landscape ecology that take into account both the human and nonhuman environments as components of the land mosaic. Sustainability is not a final status that is achieved once and for all; it is an ongoing challenge. As a case study, this proposal outlines the urgently needed reconciliation between industrial parks and their surrounding natural ecosystems, and promotes the evolution of both components toward sustainability.

Description: This is an open access book. This book, first of all, introduces the new unveiled Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone with details as a special mode of the regional collaborative development that is committed to be mutually beneficial to both sides with different political and economic systems. China's central authorities have recently issued a masterplan for constructing the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone at Hengqin Island in September 2021. As China's first and last European colony and one of China’s two special administrative regions (SARs), Macao has developed the gambling industry seven times larger than that of Las Vegas. However, the problem of the homogeneous industrial structure and the urgent need to promote sustainable economic growth by regional cooperation have been important theoretical and practical issues discussed by scholars and policy-makers. The Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone (ICZ) is managed under special customs supervision between two boarder lines and expected to diversify Macao’s economy. Then, this book dissects the theory of regional synergistic development and its applications in a number of international comparative and cross-interdisciplinary case studies worldwide. Finally, from the perspective of land use, transportation connection, and social service, this book thoroughly explores the challenges and strategies to implement the new cooperation model within the framework of one country, two systems, two customs, and two currencies to achieve a win–win situation using updated first-hand data collected by literature review, case study, field survey, spatial analysis, and interview.

Notes: Bipolar electric fatigue in ferroelectric niobium-doped lead zirconate titanate stannateceramics was investigated. Variations in the polarization and strain hysteresis loops as well asmicrostructural modifications of the material due to the electric cycling were analyzed. Comparedwith ferroelectric PZT ceramics cycled under similar conditions, the material exhibited a higherresistance to electric fatigue. Properties of the specimens showed significant decays above 106.5 cycles.Asymmetric suppression of strain hysteresis loop was monitored. At 108 cycles, the remanentpolarization, the right maximum strain and the left maximum strain decreased to 70%, 58% and 44%of their initial values, respectively. The color of the material was changed from pale yellow to darkgrey with cycling. The properties and color of the fatigued samples were recovered almost fully tothose of the virgin state after a heat treatment at 500oC for 1 h. The pinning of domain walls, probablyby oxygen vacancies, was concluded to be the predominant fatigue mechanism for the material

Notes: The influence of processing parameters on the morphology of hydrothermally derivedBaTiO3 powders was investigated. Layered H2Ti3O7 with plank-like morphology were used as theTi-precursor materials. The BaTiO3 powders were characterized by XRD and SEM. Lower Ba/Tiratio is benefit for preparation of BaTiO3 particles which retains the morphology of the precursor. TheBaTiO3 particles obtained at 200°C for 24h were large, uniform, and plank-like particles. Extendingthe hydrothermal temperature or the hydrothermal time does not help to synthesize BaTiO3 powdersof large size and uniform morphology

Notes: Based on double cermet layer structure, Mo-Al2O3 cermet solar selective coating wasprepared on stainless steel substrate. A solar absorptance of 0.92 and normal emittance of 0.19 atroom temperature have been achieved. Vacuum annealing treatment was done and its influences onthe solar selective performance was discussed. Absorptance changed between 0.90 and 0.92 under theselected annealing temperature range of 350-800°C, and emittance varied from 0.19 to 0.23 whenheated at 650°C. The microstructures before and after annealing process at different temperatureswere investigated

Notes: It is an effective approach to combine state signal processing with fuzzy mathematics for recognizing fuzziness and randomness clearly. This paper shows how the fuzzy membership functions are obtained from the result of signal processing of fault diagnosis in electrical equipment. So the properties of electrical equipment are revealed more thoroughly. Finally, the effectiveness of the method was proved by an example.

Notes: "Poor" information systems are found everywhere. In this paper, a control approach to "poor" information systems, such as social economic systems, is proposed. First, "poor" information processing and SCGM-model will be discussed. Secondly, we will develop an optimal controller of "poor" information systems.

Notes: Bipolar electric fatigue in antiferroelectrics of the lead zirconate titanate stannate ceramics family was investigated. Variations in strain hysteresis loops and damages in microstructure of the materials due to the electric cycling were analyzed. The materials showed symmetric or asymmetric suppression of strain hysteresis loop, normal or diffuse AFE-FE phase transition and intact or damaged microstructure after 5×10-7 cycles, indicating a strong composition dependent fatigue effectand the corresponding mechanism. In general, the antiferroelectric materials exhibited much higher fatigue resistance than ferroelectric ceramics reported previously

Description: The sand rat Psammomys obesus is a gerbil species native to deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, and is constrained in its ecology because high carbohydrate diets induce obesity and type II diabetes that, in extreme cases, can lead to pancreatic failure and death. We report the sequencing of the sand rat genome and discovery of an unusual, extensive, and mutationally biased GC-rich genomic domain. This highly divergent genomic region encompasses several functionally essential genes, and spans the ParaHox cluster which includes the insulin-regulating homeobox gene Pdx1. The sequence of sand rat Pdx1 has been grossly affected by GC-biased mutation, leading to the highest divergence observed for this gene across the Bilateria. In addition to genomic insights into restricted caloric intake in a desert species, the discovery of a localized chromosomal region subject to elevated mutation suggests that mutational heterogeneity within genomes could influence the course of evolution.
