In:  Supplement to: Zheng, Fan; Li, Qianyu; Li, Baohua; Chen, Muhong; Tu, Xia; Tian, Jun; Jian, Zhimin (2005): A millennial scale planktonic foraminifer record of the mid-Pleistocene climate transition from the northern South China Sea. Description: A high resolution record (~1100 yr) of planktonic foraminifers from ODP Site 1144 in the northern South China Sea reveals rapid and strongly variable climatic changes during the mid-Pleistocene transition period. The abundance of warm water species decreased from an average of 60% in marine isotope stage (MIS) 29 to 〈40% at MIS 22, followed by a steady increase in cool water species toward younger intervals. Many deep dwelling, warm water species decreased to a minimum during MIS 22 and remained extremely rare or even became absent in younger glacial intervals, indicating stepwise sea surface cooling in the region. Estimated SSTs show large fluctuations mostly at glacial-interglacial transitions. A maximum winter temperature difference of 11 °C (17-28 °C) across MIS 23/22 boundary likely corresponded to a major growth of boreal ice sheets across the MPT center at 0.9 myr, coupled with a strengthened winter monsoon over East Asia . The MPT event not only led to a better correlation between changes in species abundances and glacial-interglacial cycles but also a more constrained thermocline that shoaled considerably during subsequent glacial periods. The oxygen isotope record and the abundance of shallow water species display power spectra closely in pace with the 41,000 and 100,000 years cyclicities. A lower coherence over these cyclicities between deep-water dwelling species and the planktonic delta18O, a shoaled thermocline, and more positive glacial delta18O together suggest disturbances of surface and subsurface waters by intensified winter monsoons over the last 1.1-0.5 myr in the South China Sea.

Notes: Abstract The global structure of the mapping Tn:x→[x 2]n is studied. The symmetric unconnected substructures of T2 is coincident with [1] by computer, but for n=3 the symmetry of these substructures vanishes. As n is increasing, the global bifurcation structure of Tn is shown. Finally, similar results for the mapping Tn, μ:x→[μx 2]n are also proved..

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a method is developed to detect the appearance of stochasticity in a kind of near-integrable Hamiltonian system with two time-scales. One is fast and the other slow. The stochasticity is showed to be chaos in the sense of Smale horseshoes actually. A stochastic web is discovered in our example, by use of the results obtained in this paper.

Description: Well-dated, high-resolution records of planktonic foraminifera and oxygen isotopes from two sediment cores, A7 and E017, in the middle Okinawa Trough reveal strong and rapid millennial-scale climate changes since ~18 to 17 thousand years before present (kyr B.P.). Sedimentation rate shows a sudden drop at ~11.2 cal. kyr B.P. due to a rapid rise of sea-level after the Younger Dryas (YD) and consequently submergence of the large continental shelf on the East China Sea (ECS) and the retreat of the estuary providing sediment to the basin. During the last deglaciation, the relative abundance of warm and cold species of planktonic foraminifera fluctuates strongly, consistent with the timing of sea surface temperature (SST) variations determined from Mg/Ca measurements of planktonic foraminifera from one of the two cores. These fluctuations are coeval with climate variation recorded in the Greenland ice cores and North Atlantic sediments, namely Heinrich event 1 (H1), Bølling-Allerød (B/A) and YD events. At about 9.4 kyr B.P., a sudden change in the relative abundance of shallow to deep planktonic species probably indicates a sudden strengthening of the Kuroshio Current in the Okinawa Trough, which was synchronous with a rapid sea-level rise at 9.5-9.2 kyr B.P. in the ECS, Yellow Sea (YS) and South China Sea (SCS). The abundance of planktonic foraminiferal species, together with Mg/Ca based SST, exhibits millennial-scale oscillations during the Holocene, with 7 cold events (at about 1.7, 2.3-4.6, 6.2, 7.3, 8.2, 9.6, 10.6 cal. kyr BP) superimposed on a Holocene warming trend. This Holocene trend, together with centennial-scale SST variations superimposed on the last deglacial trend, suggests that both high and low latitude influences affected the climatology of the Okinawa Trough.

Description: The condensation of half-light half-matter exciton polaritons in semiconductor optical cavities is a striking example of macroscopic quantum coherence in a solid-state platform. Quantum coherence is possible only when there are strong interactions between the exciton polaritons provided by their excitonic constituents. Rydberg excitons with high principal value exhibit strong dipole–dipole interactions in cold atoms. However, polaritons with the excitonic constituent that is an excited state, namely Rydberg exciton polaritons (REPs), have not yet been experimentally observed. Here, we observe the formation of REPs in a single crystal CsPbBr3 perovskite cavity without any external fields. These polaritons exhibit strong nonlinear behavior that leads to a coherent polariton condensate with a prominent blue shift. Furthermore, the REPs in CsPbBr3 are highly anisotropic and have a large extinction ratio, arising from the perovskite’s orthorhombic crystal structure. Our observation not only sheds light on the importance of many-body physics in coherent polariton systems involving higher-order excited states, but also paves the way for exploring these coherent interactions for solid-state quantum optical information processing.

Description: Kinetochores are superprotein complexes that orchestrate chromosome segregation via a dynamic interaction with spindle microtubules. A physical connection between CENP-C and the Mis12–Ndc80–Knl1 (KMN) protein network is an important pathway that is used to assemble kinetochores on CENP-A nucleosomes. Multiple outer kinetochore components are phosphorylated by Aurora B kinase to activate the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) and to ensure accurate chromosome segregation. However, it is unknown whether Aurora B can phosphorylate inner kinetochore components to facilitate proper mitotic chromosome segregation. Here, we reported the structure of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe Mis12–Nnf1 complex and showed that N-terminal residues 26–50 in Cnp3 (the CENP-C homolog of S. pombe) are responsible for interacting with the Mis12 complex. Interestingly, Thr28 of Cnp3 is a substrate of Ark1 (the Aurora B homolog of S. pombe), and phosphorylation impairs the interaction between the Cnp3 and Mis12 complex. The expression of a phosphorylation-mimicking Cnp3 mutant results in defective chromosome segregation due to improper kinetochore assembly. These results establish a previously uncharacterized regulatory mechanism involved in CENP-C–Mis12-facilitated kinetochore attachment error correction to ensure accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis.
