Description: Modern observations have presented linkages between subsurface waters of the western Pacific warm pool and both El Niño/Southern Oscillation-related and extratropic-controlled upper-ocean stratification on interannual timescales. Moreover, studies have showed that such controls may operate on orbital cycles, although the details remain unclear. Here we present paired temperature and salinity reconstructions for the surface and thermocline waters in the central western Pacific warm pool over the past 360,000 years, as well as transit modeling results from an Earth system model. Our results show that variations in subsurface temperature and salinity in the western Pacific warm pool have consistently correlated with the shallow meridional overturning cell over the past four glacial-interglacial cycles, and they vary on eccentricity and precession cycles. The shallow meridional over- turning cell regulates subsurface waters of the western Pacific warm pool by changing subtropical surface water density and thus equatorial upper-ocean stratification, acting as an El Niño/Southern Oscillation-like process in the precession band. Therefore, the western Pacific warm pool is critical in connecting the austral shallow meridional overturning cell to the Earth’s climate system on orbital timescales.

Description: Well-dated, high-resolution records of planktonic foraminifera and oxygen isotopes from two sediment cores, A7 and E017, in the middle Okinawa Trough reveal strong and rapid millennial-scale climate changes since ~18 to 17 thousand years before present (kyr B.P.). Sedimentation rate shows a sudden drop at ~11.2 cal. kyr B.P. due to a rapid rise of sea-level after the Younger Dryas (YD) and consequently submergence of the large continental shelf on the East China Sea (ECS) and the retreat of the estuary providing sediment to the basin. During the last deglaciation, the relative abundance of warm and cold species of planktonic foraminifera fluctuates strongly, consistent with the timing of sea surface temperature (SST) variations determined from Mg/Ca measurements of planktonic foraminifera from one of the two cores. These fluctuations are coeval with climate variation recorded in the Greenland ice cores and North Atlantic sediments, namely Heinrich event 1 (H1), Bølling-Allerød (B/A) and YD events. At about 9.4 kyr B.P., a sudden change in the relative abundance of shallow to deep planktonic species probably indicates a sudden strengthening of the Kuroshio Current in the Okinawa Trough, which was synchronous with a rapid sea-level rise at 9.5-9.2 kyr B.P. in the ECS, Yellow Sea (YS) and South China Sea (SCS). The abundance of planktonic foraminiferal species, together with Mg/Ca based SST, exhibits millennial-scale oscillations during the Holocene, with 7 cold events (at about 1.7, 2.3-4.6, 6.2, 7.3, 8.2, 9.6, 10.6 cal. kyr BP) superimposed on a Holocene warming trend. This Holocene trend, together with centennial-scale SST variations superimposed on the last deglacial trend, suggests that both high and low latitude influences affected the climatology of the Okinawa Trough.

Description: Site U1456 (location: 16°37.28′N, 68°50.33′E; length: 1109.4 m) was drilled at a water depth of 3640 m within the Laxmi Basin in the eastern Arabian Sea duirng International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355. We here focus on the upper 82.02 m core composite depth below seafloor (CCSF) at Site U1456, deposited since ~700 ka. Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the clay-sized detrital sediment fractions (12 samples) and concentrations of the total organic carbon (TOC, 101 samples), total nitrogen (TN, 101 samples), and biogenic silica (BSi, 101 samples) were analyzed using a thermal ionization mass spectrometer (Phoenix), a Carlo Erba Elemental Analyzer (1108), a CO2 Coulometer (CM5014), and a wet alkaline extraction method.

Description: We carry out our work on a total of 202 sediment samples spanning the past ~400 kyr from IODP Site 363-U1483 (13.09°S, 121.80°E; water depth: 1733 m), which is located close to the southern margin of the ITCZ's latitudinal displacement in the outflow area of the Indonesian Throughflow. In this study, we present Mg/Ca ratios and stable oxygen isotope from tests of planktonic foraminiferal Globigerinoides ruber, respectively.

Description: We obtained Core KX97322-4 (00°01.73′S, 159°14.66′E, 2362 m) from the Ontong Java Plateau in the central WPWP using a giant piston corer on the Science-1 vessel during the Warm Pool Subject Cruise executed in 2008. The sedimentation rate is 0.39–4.95 cm kyr^-1^, with an average time resolution of 0.57 kyr cm^-1^. The age model was established based on downcore stable oxygen isotope measurements on the benthic foraminifer Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi (〉500 μm) correlated with the reference benthic stack LR04 using Match 2.3.1 software, combined with five accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (^14^C) dates on the planktonic foraminifer Trilobatus sacculifer (with a sac) (350–500 μm) measured at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facility, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA. We measured stable oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca ratio of planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei at the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), using GV IsoPrime mass spectrometer and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES, Thermo-Fisher, iCAP6300 radial) to rebuild paleo-temperature and salinity of the central western Pacific warm pool during the last 360, 000 years, aiming to probe paleo-ENSO progress in late Quaternary.
