    Notes: Summary The phonon energy spectra of a polycrystalline α-Fe foil were observed at 150 K and 300 K by using the nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation. In each spectrum, inelastic scattering was observed at both sides of the elastic peak. It was found that the ratio of the elastic-scattering component and the asymmetry of the intensity of the side bands observed at 150 K are larger than those observed at 300 K, respectively. The observed temperature-dependent spectra are in good agreement with the spectra calculated from the phonon energy distribution function. One of the advantageous features of this method is that the excitation of only a specific element is possible. Our results show that this method is applicable to the study of lattice dynamics and opens a new field of the nuclear resonant scattering spectroscopy.

    Notes: This article reports the effect of Al doping into MnBiSi films on the structure and magneto-optical properties of the parent. Under suitable Al doping, the x-ray diffraction peaks of (002) and (004) move to a larger 2aitch-theta value related to that of MnBiSi. Moreover, two satellite peaks appear beside the main (002) and (004) peaks of MnBiAlSi. Such structural distortion due to Al doping results in an increased Kerr rotation angle, an effective perpendicular anisotropy constant Ku, as well as improvement of the thermal stability of MnBiSi.

    Notes: Static thermomagnetic recording on MnBiAl films at 633 nm is reported. The intrinsic Kerr rotation of the sample investigated is 1.8° at 633 nm. A 14 mW pulsed laser was used to write stable domains with diameter of 1.2 μm under zero external applied magnetic field, and a 12 mW pulsed laser was utilized to erase the recorded domains using an external field 600 Oe. The direct observation of the homogeneously recorded domain arrays of 16×22 points on an area of approximately 0.01 mm2 shows that they possess a very good circular configuration, distinct margin, and a very high contrast between "0'', "1'' states due to large Kerr rotation θk and coercivity Hc. The number of write/erase cycles on MnBiAl is over 106 times, which is a significant improvement over the 103 times possible with MnBi. Measurements demonstrate that MnBiAl film is a promising magneto-optical recording medium. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The chemical composition, structural, and optical properties of nitrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) films deposited by a pulsed filtered vacuum arc deposition system were characterized by non-Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. It was observed that the amount of nitrogen atoms incorporated into the ta-C:N films, as well as the sp2 fraction of the films, increased with increasing nitrogen pressure PN during deposition. As a result, the optical band gap of the ta-C:N films also decreased with increasing PN. At a fixed nitrogen partial pressure of 4×10−3 Pa, the nitrogen content was found to first increase with increasing substrate negative bias voltage (−Us), up to a maximum of about 14.5 at. % at −Us of 100 and 150 V, then decreases with further increase of −Us. The sp2 fraction however increased monotonically with increasing −Us. The optical band gap of the ta-C:N films initially increased with increasing −Us, up to a maximum at a certain −Us, and then decreased with further increase in −Us. The variation of the optical band gap with the negative substrate bias voltage was discussed in terms of the different sp2-bonded carbon configurations existing in the films and the graphitization of the ta-C:N films, as indicated by the Raman and density measurement results. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Nickel disilicide (NiSi2) layers were synthesized by nickel ion implantation into silicon substrates using a metal vapor vacuum-arc ion source. The electrical transport properties were studied before and after annealing using sheet resistivity and Hall effect measurements from 30 to 400 K, and the results showed surprising features very different from those generally reported NiSi2 layers. The temperature dependence of sheet resistivity Rs(T) and Hall mobility μH(T) in the as-implanted samples showed peculiar peak and valley features varying from sample to sample, depending on the preparation conditions. However, after annealing, the differences between samples seemed to have diminished in that they all showed similar shapes in both the Rs(T) and the μH(T) curves. A two-band model was proposed to explain the observed electrical transport properties. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A compact environmental chamber with a furnace operating in the range from room temperature to about 900 K has been built for a high-temperature nuclear-resonant Bragg scattering study. The compact size (75 mm diameter and 70 mm depth) allows an external magnetic field to be applied from outside permanent Nd–Fe–B alloy magnets; a magnetic field up to 1000 G has been obtained. The chamber can be mounted on a precise θ–2θ goniometer so that in situ observations of X-ray diffraction from a single crystal can be carried out. The temperature is measured by two thermocouples placed at the top and back of the sample and controlled by a PID controller. The temperature fluctuation of the chamber is less than ±1 K.

    Notes: Spontaneous X-ray parametric scattering from a diamond single crystal has been observed at the Photon Factory. The high perfection of the diamond single crystal and the small angular divergence of synchrotron radiation has enabled down-converted X-ray photon pairs to scatter into two small solid angles which satisfy the phase-matching condition. High-efficiency noise reduction was performed using avalanche photodiode detectors with good time resolution.

    Notes: The intensity correlation experiment using visible light performed by Hanbury Brown & Twiss [Nature (London) (1956), 177, 27–29] is extended to X-ray wavelengths. Correlations of 14.4 keV X-ray photons from a synchrotron radiation source are observed by the coincidence counting technique. The high brilliance of synchrotron radiation available in the Tristan main ring enables the observation of two-photon correlations with a reasonable measurement time.
