Notes: Bi-based superconducting phases have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The strong one-dimensional modulations in undoped and Ce-doped monoclinic Bi2 Sr2 CuO6 (2201) samples are different from one another. We have found a new 2201 phase containing Pb and Ca with orthorhombic symmetry in nominal (Bi0.90 Pb0.10 )2 Sr2 CaCu2 O8 crystals. Its structure with space group Bbmb and two-dimensional modulation are analogous to those of the Pb-doped higher members of the structural series Bi2 Sr2 Can−1 Cun O2n+4 . Hence, this new orthorhombic rather than the monoclinic 2201 phase should be the first member of the structural series.

Notes: BaO precipitates with sizes between 10–100 nm in laser ablated YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films on Y-stabilized Zirconia substrates have been identified by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The precipitates exhibit equiaxed shapes and grow epitaxially inside and on the surface of the YBCO films, with (001)BaO plane parallel to the a,b plane of YBCO. Some of these smaller precipitates and BaO/YBCO boundaries probably provide potential pinning sites for magnetic flux lines, which might contribute to the observed increase of critical current density with magnetic field B under B≤500 G in the case of B perpendicular to the c axis of the film.

Notes: Abstract Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown GaAs films on Si substrates (0 0 1) 4° off towards 〈1 1 1〉 A and towards 〈1 1 1〉 B, were examined by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that in both samples, threading dislocations in the GaAs epilayer are blocked mainly in a thin layer near the GaAs-Si interface. This thin layer is like an inner interface, consisting of pyramidal islands and is flatter on the As growth surface than that on the Ga growth surface. In the type B sample, the density of dislocations is lower, the inner interface is flatter and the number of twins is much larger than that in the type A sample.

Notes: The space group of a well annealed LaAlO3 crystal, determined by convergent-beam electron diffraction, is Fm\overline 3c. Lower-symmetry monoclinic and triclinic phases have also been observed in not so well annealed and as-grown crystals. The cubic structure with Fm\overline 3c symmetry arises from a side-doubling transformation of the cubic perovskite structure due to the tilting of oxygen octahedra. Lower-symmetry phases are associated with the distortion of the cubic lattice due to oxygen deficiency or strain in the crystal. The previously reported R\overline 3c space group is probably due to the coexistence of the cubic phase and a lower-symmetry phase in the same crystal.

Notes: Abstract Although Ir anomaly has been discovered in a number of C/T boundaries in the world, no positive results of this anomaly in Permian/Triassic (P/Tr) boundary were given. There are many well-developed P/T sections in South China. One of representative sections is located at the Baoqing quarry, Meishan Town, Changxin County, Zhejiang Province. Ir, Os, Re, Au, Pt, Cu and Mo were determined by the radiochemical procedure developed in our laboratory. (1) Besides those accessible by INAA. The results reveal that the refractory siderophile and other chalcophile elements have certain enrichment near and at the boundary layer. However, the Ir/Au and other element abundance ratios fail to accord with the extraterrestrial values. The nature of the boundary event was discussed in terms of elemental geochemistry.

Notes: Abstract Detailed transmission electron microscopic study has been carried out on heteroepitaxial YBa2Cu3O7/SrTiO3/YBa2Cu3O7 trilayer thin films grown on (100)SrTiO3 substrates prepared by DC and RF magnetron sputtering. The microstructural results showed the existence of somea-axis-oriented YBCO grains 20–90 nm wide in thec-axis-oriented YBCO matrix. Some of thea-axis grains in the lower YBCO thin film layer have protruded into the above SrTiO3 layer, which may cause short circuit between the two YBCO superconducting layers. This is unsuitable for the application of trilayer thin films for microelectronic devices. The defects on the surface of the substrates would also influence the growth quality of the YBCO thin films.

Notes: Abstract The effect of annealing conditions on the superconductivity of the Pb-based 1 2 1 2 phase Pb0.65Sr2.35Y0.5Ca0.5Cu2Oy system was studied. The weight change of the samples was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The phases occurring in the samples were detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their superconducting transitions were determined by alternating current (a.c.) susceptibility measurements. The results showed that the oxygen occupancy sites of the samples annealed under various conditions were different, and the oxygen content or oxygen occupancy site affected the phase formation of the sample. It has been found that there is an optimum value of oxygen content at which TC is the highest, and the highest TC can be obtained only within a very narrow range of oxygen content.

Notes: Abstract Ytterbium-implanted Si(0 0 1) wafers annealed at different temperatures (800, 900, 1000 and 1200°C) have been examined by means of cross-section transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and electron diffraction. The results indicate that two layers of defects exist in the samples, one mainly includes microtwins and the other includes ytterbium precipitates. The distribution and morphology of the defects depend mostly on the thermal annealing: the higher the annealing temperature, the larger the size of the defects and the closer are the layers of defects to the wafer surface. High-resolution images show the different characteristics and details of the defects under various annealing conditions. The relation between microstructure and luminescence response is also discussed.

Notes: Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) is a powerful technique for symmetry study of crystal. It has widespread application in physics and material sciences, as demonstrated in a recent superconducting oxide study. Using this technique, we have studied Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors with a transition temperature of about 40°K and Ba-Y-Cu-O superconductors with a critical temperature (Tc) of about 90°K. We have found that in Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors the superconducting phase La2-xBaxCuO4-y has a distorted K2NiF4-type structure and the space group Fmmm. The two other phases in Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors have also been studied. In our Ba-Y-Cu-O superconductors, the Ba2YCu3O7-x compound, which is responsible for 90°K superconductivity, has two different space groups: An orthorhombic space group Pmmm and a tetragonal space group P4mm or P4/mmm.
