Notes: To increase the mechanical properties of PLA used for fracture inner fixation, β-calciummetaphosphate whiskers were prepared by controlled crystallization in the glass. The factorsinfluencing the morphology of the samples, such as component, time and temperature ofcrystallization were discussed. Results showed that the high quality of β-calcium metaphosphatewhiskers can be obtained by crystallization treating for 36 hours and washing for 48 hours at 80℃distilled water. β-calcium metaphosphate whiskers having high aspect ratios of 20-100 withdiameters of 1-5μm were achieved at the optimized conditions

Notes: Dental ceramic materials do not always show linear expansion behavior. In general, thermalcontraction behavior of dental porcelain can be described with the polynomial function: [removed info]L/L= C+α1T+α2 T2. In addition, a new method for taking into consideration of nonlinear contraction behavior ofdental ceramics is proposed for calculating thermal mismatch value ([removed info]α) between substrate andveneering materials. Discs of eight substrate/veneer combinations (n=10) were fabricated for thermalshock testing. In this study, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to determine therelationship between thermal shock test results and thermal mismatch value ([removed info]α) on thesecombinations. A high degree of correlation was found between [removed info]αs-b and [removed info]T. The new method provesto be a reliable one to predict thermal compatibility of multi-layer dental ceramic composites

Notes: In this paper, the adsorption of human serum albumin (HSA), human serum fibrinogen (HFG)and human serum immune globulin (IG) on surfaces of diamond like carbon film (DLC), diamond film(DF) and graphite has been studied. The adsorption isotherms of single component protein solution andthe competitive adsorption of binary system have been investigated by radioisotope 125 I labeling method. Results showed that (1) the adsorptive amounts of HSA on DLC is more than that of HFG, but the adsorptiveamounts of HFG on DF and graphite are apparently more than those HSA; (2) the relative competitiveadsorption ability of three proteins on DF and graphite surfaces is HFG 〉 IG 〉 HSA, but that on DLC isHFG ≈ HAS 〉 IG, comparison with HSA, there is no apparent competitive adsorption superiority on DLCfor HFG. These results indicated that there is no apparent distinction for the adsorption of three humanserum proteins on DLC, but the adsorption of HFG on DF and graphite takes precedence in varyingdegrees. It probably makes rational explanation for the result of blood-compatibility tests in vitro thatDLC is good, but DF and graphite are worse

Notes: 5-Fluorouracil-poly(L-lactide) (5-Fu-PLLA) microspheres have been co-precipitated in aprocess namely solution-enhanced dispersion by supercritical CO2 (SEDS). First, the 5-Fu issuccessfully micronized and then used to produce the 5-Fu-PLLA microspheres. The 5-Fu-PLLAmicrospheres synthesized in the SEDS process exhibited a rather spherical shape, smooth surface, and a narrow particle size distribution, where it ranged from 531 nm to 1280 nm, with a meanparticle size of 793 nm. The dichloromethane residue in the 5-Fu-PLLA microspheres is 46 ppm.The average drug load of the 5-Fu-PLLA microspheres is 12.7%. The results of this study indicatethat the SEDS process is an effective technique to co-precipitate 5-Fu and PLLA as compositemicrospheres

Notes: Degradation of surface modified β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and poly L lactic acid(PLLA) composite scaffolds were investigated in vitro. Bending and compressive strengths weretested by electromechanical universal material testing machine. Molecular weight changes of lacticacid during degradation were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Phasecomposition of the surface after soaking was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared ray (FTIR). Thesurface and cross section of scaffold samples after degradation were observed by Scanning electronmicroscope (SEM).The results show that degradation speed can be controlled by adjusting the ratio ofβ-TCP to PLLA in the composite. PLLA can compound more closely with surface modified β-TCPthan with non-modified one. The final compressive strength and bending strength of the scaffoldsreach 7.11MPa and 2.20MPa respectively, which satisfies the need for bone tissue engineeringscaffolds in clinic applications

Notes: Silicate fireproof coatings for tunnels (FCT) have many eminent properties. But low adhesionstrength and poor water/fire-resistance of this kind of materials largely limit its applications. Here wereported a new kind of FCT based on high alumina cement as principle adhesive, redispersible powder asassisting adhesive, ammonium polyphosphate as fire-retardant material, vermiculite as adiabatic padding, and magnesium hydroxide as assisting reagents. The influence of various experimental conditions on fireresistance, adhesion strength and water resistance were carefully studied. Results showed that dispersibleemulsoid powder was a key component affecting adhesion strength and water resistance of FCT, whereasfire-retardant material posed significant effects on the fire resistance

Notes: The nano-size silver particles were prepared in polymer-protecting colloidal dispersion withsilver nitride as the raw material, hydrazine hydrate as the reduction reagent and polyvinyl pirrolidone(PVP) as the protective solvent. The optimal conditions for the preparation process were studiedexperimentally as well. The influences from main factors, such as Ag+ concentration and ratio ofhydrazine/AgNO3, on the particle size, appearance shape, particle aggregation condition and sizedistribution of nano-silver particles were also investigated. The results showed that the size of Agparticles prepared in this polymer-protecting system is less than 50 nm, and PVP can reduce the growingtendency of nano-size silver particles. Meanwhile, the antibacterial dope loaded nano-silver particleswere prepared by wetting agent, dispersant, defoamer, etc. The antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects ofthe dope with or without nano-silver particles were tested with bacilli as the tested bacteria. Theexperiment results showed that the dope loaded nano-silver particles are of high practicality. Its antibacterialratio is also up to 91.9% in one hour when the added dosage of nano-silver is 0.02%

Notes: Analytic modeling and analog computer simulation techniques are presented to determinethe power train transient responses excited by clutch-actuated gear shifts. A method to describe thedynamics of a transmission arrangement having several clutches and interconnected planetary gearsets is considered in detail. Simulation model testing is directed toward optimizing system designparameters and evaluating power train component capability and vehicle shift-feel. Data reductiontechniques applied to model responses of torque and speed will yield appropriate spectrumsrepresentative of simulated work cycle

Notes: Porous biodegradable scaffolds are widely used in bone tissue engineering to providetemporary templates for cellular attachment and matrix synthesis. Ideally, the degradation rate in vivomay be similar or slightly less than that of tissue formation, allowing for the maintenance of the scaffoldstructure and the mechanical support during early stages of tissue formation. Eventually, the 3-D spacesoccupied by the porous scaffolds will be replaced by newly formed tissue. In this work, β-tricalciumphosphate/Poly-L lactide (β-TCP/PLLA) scaffolds with different proportions of β-TCP to PLLA wereinvestigated. The effects of β-TCP proportions on degradation rate and mechanical strengths of thescaffolds were evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37℃ up to 42 days. Results show that: differentproportions of β-TCP to PLLA have significant influence on degradation behaviors of the scaffolds, andmechanical strengths of the scaffolds with weight proportion of β-TCP to PLLA being 2 to 1 are muchhigher than those of the others during the degradation period. And in this period, the scaffolds biodegradeslowly, and Hydroxyl Carbonate Apatite (HCA) forms in the surface of the material
