Notes: Abstract The aim of this research is to develop a rule-based frame system for printed circuit board (PCB) assembly to generate the component feeder arrangement and placement sequence for concurrent chip placement machines. A knowledge base of frames, assertions and rules are used in the methodology to solve the PCB assembly process of SMT components. The system has been implemented using an AI programming environment, GOLDWORKS®. A heuristic approach is used to minimize placement cycle time in PCB assembly. The objective of the solution method is to reduce theX-Y table displacement, movement and component feeder translation movement. Such a system is aimed at obtaining good solutions to the problem as illustrated by an example.

Notes: Abstract Burrs are always present in metal cutting and moulding processes and removal of burrs has always been a difficult engineering problem. The removal of burrs from high-strength materials with generic features that have “blind” or difficult-to-access burrs have made many deburring processes useless. Although some processes such as electro-chemical and thermal energy deburring methods are able to perform well for this purpose, there are serious health and safety considerations. There are also other limitations such as the requirement for materials to be electrically conductive for electro-chemical methods. In this paper, the ultrasonic deburring process has been used and developed to deburr thick metallic and non-metallic burrs which previously could not be deburred. The ability of ultrasound to propagate through elastic media and the fact that it does not require any tooling makes this technique very useful to treat surfaces that are generic in nature and difficult to access.

Notes: Abstract One drawback of current machinability data systems is the inability to accommodate technological changes. Existing schemes to optimise machinability data are too specific and rigid. This paper describes the development of a methodology for a more effective selection of machinability data. The methodology incorporates various techniques, such as expert systems and mathematical programming. The unique feature of this system is the way machinability data are handled to arrive at the most suitable solution. The system accepts a wide range of data, from the very complete and specific to the very general. The more detailed and specific the data set is, the more credible the results will be. The machinability data in the data banks are easily updated and improved using feedback data from current shop floor production. The process of obtaining solutions from these banks is regarded as flexible optimisation. This paper reports on the optimisation methodology for multipass turning operations. Longitudinal turning, facing, taper turning and contour turning have been considered.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the health hazards faced in a company which produces printed paper packaging. The analysis is based on three main production processes, namely, printing, plate-making and washing. The components in the emissions of these processes are broken down into their chemical compositions and given a hazard rating. The analytic hierarchy process in the health hazard scoring system is introduced to evaluate the level of hazard of each process to the environment. When the hazard level encountered in each process is known, the necessary precautions and measures can be taken.

Notes: In today’s industry, many manufacturing processes have been systematically and scientifically analysed with the aim of achieving maximum efficiency combined with economic manufacturing conditions. The usual practice of manufacturers was to focus on a single factor in decision-making, such as production and cost. Recently, green manufacturing has been playing an important role in reducing the waste produced from industrial activities. This is due to a growing awareness of the need for a balanced approach to industry objectives using environmentally friendly process planning. This paper presents a methodology for the multi-objective analysis of the electric discharge machining (EDM) processes. A utility function was employed to determine the utility levels of various dielectrics by integrating the factors involving time, energy, quality and weighted mass. Using the utility function, the process or material with the highest rating represents the condition with the best match of all the key factors. It will therefore give a more balanced result, leading to savings in resources, which helps in protecting the environment.

Notes: Abstract This paper concerns the modelling of cost-tolerance data for various manufacturing processes and the optimisation of process sequences based on minimum production cost. A natural spline model representing the cost-tolerance relationship is introduced. A methodology to optimise the process sequences is developed using an expert system approach. An example to illustrate the methodology and the optimisation model is presented

Notes: Abstract In recent years, non-traditional machining processes have been growing in popularity and their applications have continued to increase. However, very limited research work has been carried out to investigate their economic implications on tolerance allocation. This paper reports on cost-tolerance relationships for non-traditional processes, namely, electrical discharge wire machining and laser beam machining. Medium carbon steel plates are machined using the two processes to obtain cost-tolerance data which are fitted to various mathematical models. A third-degree polynomial function has been found which gives the most representative fit to the data obtained. An example is presented to illustrate the application and to compare the cost implication of the two machining processes.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents the technique for checking collision of through-hole components during the machine insertion process on a printed circuit board (PCB). The spatial representation technique is used to represent the components and the mounting head of an insertion machine. An algorithm that simulates the insertion process is written to detect any collision of component and mounting head during the insertion process. When a collision is detected, the algorithm will attempt to avoid the collision by re-sequencing the components concerned. If resequencing does not avoid the collision, the algorithm will compute a minimum safe distance for the affected component. The algorithm can also detect component collision due to components' space overlapping each other and subsequently can provide the minimum safe distance. The required safe spacing is based on the type of mounting head or machine used. The algorithm is a useful and efficient tool that could be used during the PCB design stage. The effectiveness of the spatial representation technique has been demonstrated using the TDK VC-544R/AR insertion machine.
