    Description / Table of Contents: Резюме В статье рассмотен ряд вопросов, отнсяЩихся к интерпетации инфракрасных изображений земли из космоса. Расснитан среднемноголетние бенличины контрастов между радиационной температерой земли и облакоб для ряда пунктов СССР в различное время года, знание которых позволяет сделатъ вывод о том, когда и где могоут бытъ обнаружены облака на фоне подстилаюЩей поверхности, а также сформулирова ъ требования к аппарапуре, устанавливаемоь на спутниках. Определены теоретически коэффициенты черноты овлаков различных ярусов, проведено исследование вопроса о выборе спсктральных диапазонов для проведения наблюдений с ИСЗ. Разработанная схема расчёта использована для реШения вопроса о возможности опнаружения с ИСЗ таких тепловых неотнородностей, как морские течения, струйные течения в атмосфере. Рассмотрены примеры синоптического анализа инфракрасных изображений облачного пок рова, полученны х при помощи ИСЗ НИМБУС-1 и КОСМОС-122.
    Notes: Summary This paper considers a number of questions concerning the interpretation of infrared pictures of the earth taken from space. Long period mean statistical values of the contrasts in radiation temperature between the earth's surface and clouds for a number of points in the U.S.S.R. in different seasons have been calculated which makes it possible to conclude when and where clouds against the underlying surface can be detected as well as to formulate the requirements which the instruments mounted on a satellite are to satisfy. The blackness coefficients of clouds at different layers have been theoretically determined, the investigation of the problem of the spectral regions selection for satellite observations has been conducted. The worked out calculation scheme has been used in the solution of the problem of the possibility of satellite detection of such thermal non-homogeneities as sea currents and jet streams in the atmosphere. Examples of the synoptical analysis of the infrared pictures of the cloud cover obtained with the help of the NIMBUS-1 and COSMOS-122 satellites have been considered.

    Notes: Abstract The variations of the first mode of Schumann resonance are analyzed using data from Kola peninsula stations during the solar proton event of 6 November 1997. On this day the intensive flux of energetic protons on GOES-8 and the 10% increase of the count rate of the neutron monitor in Apatity between 1220 and 2000 UT were preceded by a solar X-ray burst at 1155 UT. This burst was accompanied by a simultaneous increase of the Schumann frequency by 3.5%, and the relativistic proton flux increase was accompanied by 1% frequency decrease. These effects are explained by changes of the height and dielectric permeability of the Earth-ionosphere cavity.

    Notes: We measure microwave frequency (4–40 GHz) photoresistance at low magnetic field B, in high mobility two-dimensional electron gas samples, excited by signals applied to a transmission line fabricated on the sample surface. Oscillatory photoresistance vs B is observed. For excitation at the cyclotron resonance frequency, we find a giant relative photoresistance ΔR/R of up to 250%. The photoresistance is apparently proportional to the square root of applied power, and disappears as the temperature is increased. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Probing magnetic fields can be done, e.g., by employing the well established Hall effect. Alternatively, we make use of the ballistic motion of electrons in high mobility two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) to probe electrically the stray field of periodically arranged micomagnets. We investigate the magnetoresistance of the 2DES underneath arrays of magnetic strips and magnetic dots having periods between 500 nm and 1 μm. The periodic stray field gives rise to pronounced oscillations of the resistivity as a function of a homogeneous (weak) magnetic field. The magnetization orientation of the dots and strips can be aligned in different directions with respect to the current flow through the device. The observed magnetoresistance depends characteristically on the magnetization direction and can be understood in terms of the stray field pattern probed by the electrons. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of carbon incorporation upon thermal oxidation of Si1−xGex alloys and its role on strain compensation in Si1−xGex alloys. Si1−xGex and Si1−x−yGexCy alloys on Si(100) are grown by combined ion and molecular beam deposition and are then oxidized at 1000 °C in a dry oxygen ambient for two h. The thickness and the composition of all samples before and after oxidation are measured by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) combined with ion channeling at 2.0 MeV and carbon nuclear resonance analysis at 4.3 MeV using 4He++ ions. In agreement with previously reported results of dry oxidation on Si1−xGex thin films, 2.0 MeV RBS analysis shows that a layer of SiO2 is formed on the top surface of both Si1−xGex and Si1−x−yGexCy thin films, while Ge segregates towards the top surface and at the SiO2/Si1−xGex and SiO2/Si1−x−yGexCy interfaces. However, it is observed for the first time that dry oxidation rates of Si1−xGex thin films decrease with increasing Ge fraction x for x(approximately-greater-than)0.20 and with increasing minimum yield. Ion channeling analysis and strain measurements indicate that the incorporation of C rather than the amount of C itself affects the dry oxidation mechanism because of its strong influence on film strain and crystalline quality. These results are discussed in conjunction with observations by secondary ion mass spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and tapping mode atomic force microscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
