Abstract: Offering an example for transnational cooperation and successful reduction of a neglected tropical disease, this volume shows how Chinese scientists and local physicians controlled schistosomiasis in Zanzibar. Over a four-year study, local medical specialists and the population of Zanzibar were taught how to diagnose the parasitosis caused by flukes (trematode worms) of the genus Schistosoma. Furthermore, methods to eliminate the disease and prevent new infections were established. The developed control system will avoid repeated increase of human schistosomiasis, which is still prevalent in the tropics and subtropics. Rural populations and poor communities lacking access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation are most affected. This book is a blueprint of activities urgently needed to combat schistosomiasis in countries with low medical impact. The strategies outlined are particularly relevant to parasitologists and professionals in public health, physicians, medical personnel and also governmental, healthcare and pharmaceutical institutions.

Description: The Qinghai-Tibet plateau (QTP), called "the Third Pole" of the earth, is the water tower of Asia that not only feeds tens of millions of people, but also maintains fragile ecosystems in arid region of northwestern China. Temporal-spatially complete representations of land surface temperature are required for many purposes in environmental science, especially in the Third pole where the traditional ground measurement is difficult and therefore the data is sparse. The thirteen years cloud-free datasets of daily mean land surface temperature (LST) and mean annual land surface temperature (MAST) during 2004 to 2016 are derived from the quartic daily MODIS (the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Terra/Aqua LST products with a resolution of 1 km using a pragmatic data processing algorithm. The comparison between radiance-based LST measurement and the estimated LST shows good agreement in the daily and inter-annual variability, with a correlation of 0.95 and 0.99 and bias of -1.73°C (±3.38°C) and -2.07°C (±1.05°C) for daily-mean-LST and MAST, respectively. The systematic error is mainly source from the defined of daily mean LST, which is represented by the arithmetic average of the daytime and nighttime LSTs. The random error is mainly source from the uncertainty of the original MODIS LST values, especially for the daytime LST products. Trend validation using air temperatures from 94 weather stations indicate that the warming trends derived from time series MAST data is comparable with that derived from CMA data. The dataset is potential useful for various studies, including climatology, hydrology, meteorology, ecology, agriculture, public health, and environmental monitoring in the Third pole and around regions.

Notes: The effects of bond randomness are studied for spin chains with excitation gaps in the pure case. Systems with enforced topological structure like the spin-1/2 chain with enforced dimerization and spin-1 chain in the Haldane gapped phase appear very stable against randomness. On the other hand, systems with spontaneously generated topological order like the spin-1/2 chain with spontaneous dimerization are found to be unstable even for weak randomness despite the gap. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple optical setup that uses a single pulse width laser is proposed to identify different kinds of nonlinear optical absorption mechanisms. It can easily distinguish reverse saturable absorption from two photon absorption, and direct three photon absorption from two photon absorption followed by one photon absorption from the excited level. Both theoretical and experimental results are reported. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We discuss the effects of a magnetic field applied parallel to the Cu–O (ab) plane of the high Tc cuprate superconductors. After briefly reviewing the Zeeman effect of the field, we study the orbital effects, using the Lawrence–Doniach model for layered superconductors as a guide to the physics. We argue that the orbital effect is qualitatively different for in-plane and interlayer mechanisms for superconductivity. In the case of in-plane mechanisms, interlayer couplings may be modeled as a weak interlayer Josephson coupling, whose effects disappear as H→∞; in this case Zeeman dominates the effect of the field. In contrast, in the interlayer mechanism the Josephson coupling is the driving force of superconductivity, and we argue that the in-plane field suppresses superconductivity and provides an upper bound for Hc2 which we estimate very crudely. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Triplet state nonlinearity of C60 in toluene is studied using the Z-scan technique with 8 ns, 532 nm pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Compared with the Z-scan results of C60 in toluene and iodine in toluene with proper concentration, the solvent instantaneous nonlinearity and the thermal nonlinearity resulting from the C60 intersystem crossing and excited state absorption are estimated. The real part of the C60 triplet state molecular polarizability is obtained. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
