Notes: Magnetization of a Cu-2 at. % Co-0.5 at. % Cr alloy was measured in the temperature range from 77 to 296 K using vibrating sample magnetometer to investigate the effect of Cr addition on magnetization of the Cu-Co alloy. Aging temperature and the range of aging time were 723 K and 1–50 h. The Cu-Co-Cr alloy, as well as the Cu-Co alloy, is found to be superparamagnetic; this indicates the presence of magnetic clusters in the Cu-Co-Cr alloy. From the magnetization versus H/T (H: applied field, T: temperature) plots, magnetization of the Cu-Co alloy can be expressed as a function of H/T while that of the Cu-Co-Cr alloy cannot. Such analytical results suggest that the magnetic moment of the cluster existing in the Cu-Co-Cr alloy is temperature dependent. The temperature dependence of the magnetic moment is attributable to the presence of Cr atoms in the magnetic cluster. From the calculation of nonlinear least-squares fitting in the magnetization, the magnetic moments of the cluster in the Cu-Co-Cr alloy aged for 1 and 5 h were estimated to be about 590 and 4800μB at room temperature.

Notes: The magnetic behavior of Cu97.7Co2Cr0.3 and Cu97Co2Cr1 alloys was examined in order to investigate the effect of Cr addition to the magnetization of the alloy and prove the presence of Cr atoms in the magnetic clusters. The magnetization of the Cu-Co-Cr alloys is strongly influenced by the amount of Cr added to Cu-Co-Cr alloys. Further, the results indicate there are Cr atoms in the magnetic clusters. The magnetic moment of the cluster was calculated from the experimental data. The results illustrate that the value of the magnetic moment is dependent on the Cr concentration in the noted alloys and this supports the presence of Cr atoms in the magnetic cluster.

Notes: The permeability, domain structure, and dynamic magnetization change of CoTaZr/Cr multilayered stripes are studied. The frequency dependence of permeability is improved by lamination with Cr layers, which eliminates the closure domain structure. An edge curling wall (ECW) is observed near the edge of the multilayered stripes. The width of the ECW agrees well with calculations and is independent of stripe width. The magnetization in the ECW is difficult to rotate by the external magnetic field; therefore, the permeability of a narrow stripe is less than that of wider stripes.

Notes: We report a new method of carbon nanotube growth by the argon ion beam irradiation of amorphous carbon under high vacuum conditions of 4×10−5 Torr. Earlier, carbon nanotubes have been produced at gas pressures above 100 Torr. The incident angle of the ion beam was normal to the target surface, and the acceleration ion energy was 3 keV. Nanotubes are produced outside the sputtering region on the target surface after ion irradiation. The tubes have multilayered walls, the distance between carbon layers is 0.34 nm, and wall thickness of tubes ranges from 10 to 15 sheets. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the magnetic properties, especially magnetoresistivity, of sputtered permalloy thin films on the sputtering Ar pressure is studied. The Ar pressure is varied between 0.106 and 1.06 pa. The coercivity and the electrical resistivity of permalloy films both remain stable in this pressure range. These two properties are dependent on the grain size of a permalloy film, which is independent of the Ar pressure in this pressure range. The average grain size is 10–12 nm in diameter. The magnetoresistivity δϱ decreases and the anisotropy field increases as the Ar pressure decreases. Magnetoresistivity is related to the preferred orientation of the sputtered permalloy film. The permalloy films deposited at high Ar pressures have no preferred orientation; therefore, they show high magnetoresistivity.

Notes: Abstract The effects of Ta addition on the magnetic properties of permalloy thin films have been investigated. The alloy compositions on a weight basis are (Ni81Fe19)1-x Ta x with 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.105, and the films are sputtered onto a glass substrate at between room temperature and 300

Notes: Abstract Thirty-six Japanese quail (18 control birds, 18 lead-dosed birds) were used. The 18 quail were dosed with #4 lead weight that were orally inserted into the proventriculus. Delta-aminolevulunic acid dehydrase (ALAD) activity in erythrocytes in the dosed quail decreased 90% (p 〈 0.01) after one week as compared with the undosed quail. This inhibition of ALAD activity in erythrocytes indicates lead exposure. Radiographics were obtained at 0, 1, 4, 9, 22, and 32 days. The lead pellets remained in the gizzard and became smaller in 4 days. At day 22, after the lead treatment, in 8 quail of the treated quail 12, the lead pellets disappeared. At day 32, all lead pellets disappeared. These findings indicate that the ingested lead pellets are absorbed gradually in the intestine. The lead concentrations in the blood, liver, kidney, and femur of the lead-dosed quail were significantly higher than in the unclosed quail until the 6th week. At week 2, the lead concentration of the proventriculus, gizzard, gizzard contents, duodenum, small intestine, and cecum in the dosed quail was significantly higher. Lead concentration of feces was significantly higher at weeks 2 and 4 (p 〈 0.01). Throughout this study, no lead pellets were found in the feces.

Notes: Abstract Lead was given to rats through drinking water containing 100 ppm lead acetate for 20 days. Delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in erythrocytes was significantly lower (p 〈 0.05) at 20 days after Pb treatment. Erythrocytic ALAD activity was significantly lower (p 〈 0.05) in fasted rats than in fed rats with or without Pb pretreatment. Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase activities after 6 days of fasting were significantly higher (p 〈 0.05) in Pb pretreated rats than in other groups (Ph nontreated fed and fasted rats, and Pb pretreated fed rats). Long periods of fasting strongly enhanced these serum-enzymes elevations induced by lead. Maximum Pb concentrations and total amount in feces increased in rats fasted for 3 days regardless of Pb pretreatment. On the other hand, total amount of Pb in feces of rats fasted for 6 days were not significantly different from the other groups because their fecal volume decreased to about 1 % of fed rats. The Pb concentrations of liver, kidney, spleen, and femur increased significantly in Pb pretreated rats compared to in controls, but there were no significant differences between the fed and fasted rats.

Notes: Summary The protein fusion technique was applied in the synthesis of an artificial dimer of ribonuclease H (305 residues). 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to analyze the structure of this dimer. Spectral profiles and pKa values of the histidine residues obtained using 1H NMR indicate that the dimer retains the secondary and tertiary structures of the intact monomer. Selective spin-lattice relaxation measurements suggest that the two monomeric units in the dimer are in tight contact. Furthermore, the 2D 1H NMR and paramagnetic relaxation filter results show that the two monomers bind together through interactions between the N- and C-terminal sites of the linked regions.
