    Description: After 06:13UT on 24 August 2005, an interplanetary (IP) shock triggers large-amplitude ultralow frequency (ULF) waves (| δB | ≥ 15nT) in the Pc4-5 wave band (1.6 - 9mHz) near the noon geosynchronous orbit (6.6R e ). The local and global effects of ULF waves on energetic particles are observed by five LANL satellites at different magnetic local times (MLTs). The large-amplitude ULF waves cause the synchronous oscillations of energetic electrons and protons (≥75keV) at the noon geosynchronous orbit. When the energetic particles have a negative phase space density (PSD) radial gradient, they undergo rapid outward radial diffusion and loss in the wave activity region. In the particle drift paths without strong ULF waves, only the rapidly drifting energetic electrons (≥ 225keV) display energy-dispersive oscillations and flux decays, whereas the slowly drifting electrons (〈 225keV) and protons (75 – 400keV) have no ULF oscillation and loss feature. When the dayside magnetopause is compressed to the geosynchronous orbit, most of energetic electrons and protons are rapidly lost because of open drift trajectories. The global and multi-composition particle measurements demonstrate that the effect of ULF waves on nonlocal particle flux depends on the particle energy and species, whereas magnetopause shadowing effect is independent of the energetic particle species. For the rapidly drifting outer radiation belt particles (≥ 225keV), nonlocal particle loss/acceleration processes could also change their fluxes in the entire drift trajectory in the absence of “ Dst effect” and substorm injection.

    Description: The pitch angle distribution (PAD) of suprathermal electrons can have both spatial and temporal evolution in the magnetotail and theoretically can be an indication of electron energization/cooling processes there. So far, the spatial evolution of PAD has been well studied, leaving the temporal evolution as an open question. To reveal the temporal evolution of electron PAD, spacecraft should monitor the same flux tube for a relatively long period, which is not easy in the dynamic magnetotail. In this study, we present such an observation by Cluster spacecraft in the magnetotail behind a dipolarization front (DF). We find that the PAD of suprathermal electrons can evolve from pancake-type to butterfly-type during 〈4 s, and then to cigar-type during 〈8 s. During this process, the flow velocity is nearly zero and the plasma entropy is constant, meaning that the evolution is temporal. We interpret such temporal evolution using the betatron cooling process, which is driven by quasi-adiabatic expansion of flux tubes, and the magnetic mirror effect, which possibly exists behind the DF as well.

    Description: All-solid-state thin film lithium batteries (TFLBs) are the most competitive low-power sources to be applied in various kinds of micro-electro-mechanical systems and have been draw a lot of attention in academic research. In this paper, the checkerboard deposition of all-solid-state TFLB was composed of thin film lithium metal anode, lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) solid electrolyte, and checkerboard deposition of lithium manganese oxide spinel (LiMn 2 O 4 ) cathode. The LiPON and LiMn 2 O 4 were deposited by a radio frequency magnetron sputtering system, and the lithium metal was deposited by a thermal evaporation coater. The electrochemical characterization of this lithium battery showed the first discharge capacity of 107.8 μAh and the capacity retention was achieved 95.5% after 150 charge-discharge cycles between 4.3V and 3V at a current density of 11 μA/cm 2 (0.5C).     Notes: Summary This paper presents the basic configuration and preliminary performance of a twenty-layer oceanic general circulation model which represents a portion of the recent progress in developing coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation models made by the authors. The model uses latitude/depthdependent thermohaline-stratification subduction, “η”-coordinate, three-dimensional implicit diffusion, complete convective adjustment, separating and coupling of external and internal modes and Asselin temporal filter, and thermodynamic sea-ice calculation. With seasonally varying climatological forcing at the surface and enhanced surface salinities in the region adjacent Antarctica, the model has been integrated for one thousand years to reach a quasiequilibrium state. Preliminary verification shows that the model is capable of simulating successfully not only many aspects of the upper ocean circulation but also an acceptable thermohaline circulation. The modelled overturning rate of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) is greater than 15Sv. The simulated overturning rate of the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is about 20Sv. The southward outflow of NADW can be identified from not only the meridional overturning streamfunction but also the current fields at four deeper levels from 1455m to 2475m. The AABW northward outflow exists at some bottom levels below 2600m, and mainly flows towards the Pacific basin. Major problems in the present simulation include the underestimate of the NADW outflow, the failure to simulate the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW), the too fresh bottom water and the too diffuse thermocline of the model. A sensitivity experiment has revealed that the model diffusion process has an important impact on the simulation of both the thermocline and the NADW outflow.

    Notes: Summary The result of a 100-year integration of a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (CGCM) is analyzed, and compared with that of a 25-year integration of the corresponding uncoupled atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) and observed data. The large-scale circulation patterns of mean climate state simulated by the CGCM are in good agreement with the observed ones, although differences exit in the positions and intensities between the simulated and the observed patterns. Having compared the standard deviations of monthly mean sea level pressure simulated by the CGCM to those by the AGCM, we found that the interaction between ocean and atmosphere mainly increases the interannual variability in the tropics especially in summer. The CGCM can also produce El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, whereas the AGCM cannot reproduce the main features of the Southern Oscillation. This implies that the air-sea interaction may be a principal mechanism for the occurrence of ENSO phenomena. The fundamental features of simulated regional climates are also analyzed. The CGCM can reproduce principal characteristics of surface air temperature and precipitation at five selected typical regions (desert region, plain region, monsoon region etc.). The distributions of annual mean surface ait temperature and precipitation in East Asia can also be reasonably simulated.

    Description: The electromagnetic field in the electron “bubble” regime for ultra-intense laser wakefield acceleration was solved using the d'Alembert equations. Ignoring the residual electrons, we assume an ellipsoidal bubble forms under ideal conditions, with bubble velocity equal to the speed of light in vacuum. The general solution for bubble shape and electromagnetic field were obtained. The results were confirmed in 2.5D PIC (particle-in-cell) simulations. Moreover, slopes for the longitudinal electric field of larger than 0.5 were found in these simulations. With spherical bubbles, this slope is always smaller than or equal to 0.5. This behavior validates the ellipsoid assumption.

    Description: Newly born magnetars are promising sources for gravitational wave (GW) detection due to their ultra-strong magnetic fields and high spin frequencies. Within the scenario of a growing tilt angle between the star's spin and magnetic axis, due to the effect of internal viscosity, we obtain improved estimates of the stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds (SGWBs) from magnetic deformation of newly born magnetars. We find that the GW background spectra contributed by the magnetars with ultra-strong toroidal magnetic fields of 10 17 G could roughly be divided into four segments. Most notably, in contrast to the background spectra calculated by assuming constant tilt angles  = /2, the background radiation above 1000 Hz are seriously suppressed. However, the background radiation at the frequency band ~100–1000 Hz are moderately enhanced, depending on the strengths of the dipole magnetic fields. We suggest that if all newly born magnetars indeed have toroidal magnetic fields of 10 17 G, the produced SGWBs should show sharp variations with the observed frequency at several tens to about 100 hertz. If these features could be observed through sophisticated detection of the SGWB using the proposed Einstein Telescope, it will provide us a direct evidence of the tilt angle evolutions and further some deep understandings about the properties of newly born magnetars.
