    Description: Plasma membrane pannexin 1 channels (PANX1) release nucleotide find-me signals from apoptotic cells to attract phagocytes. Here we show that the quinolone antibiotic trovafloxacin is a novel PANX1 inhibitor, by using a small-molecule screen. Although quinolones are widely used to treat bacterial infections, some quinolones have unexplained side effects, including deaths among children. PANX1 is a direct target of trovafloxacin at drug concentrations seen in human plasma, and its inhibition led to dysregulated fragmentation of apoptotic cells. Genetic loss of PANX1 phenocopied trovafloxacin effects, revealing a non-redundant role for pannexin channels in regulating cellular disassembly during apoptosis. Increase in drug-resistant bacteria worldwide and the dearth of new antibiotics is a major human health challenge. Comparing different quinolone antibiotics suggests that certain structural features may contribute to PANX1 blockade.     Description: We present a promising technology for nonvolatile flexible electronic devices: A direct fabrication of epitaxial lead zirconium titanate (PZT) on flexible mica substrate via van der Waals epitaxy. These single-crystalline flexible ferroelectric PZT films not only retain their performance, reliability, and thermal stability comparable to those on rigid counterparts in tests of nonvolatile memory elements but also exhibit remarkable mechanical properties with robust operation in bent states (bending radii down to 2.5 mm) and cycling tests (1000 times). This study marks the technological advancement toward realizing much-awaited flexible yet single-crystalline nonvolatile electronic devices for the design and development of flexible, lightweight, and next-generation smart devices with potential applications in electronics, robotics, automotive, health care, industrial, and military systems.

    Description: Composite wind blades of 1m long comprising glass-fabric/epoxy skins and a sandwich plate-type spar were designed and fabricated for static testing. In the composite wind blades, the spar supports the top and bottom skins to form the airfoil shape of NACA4418. The blades were tested to failure and the failure modes were identified at different loading stages. A structural failure analysis method which consists of a geometrically nonlinear finite element (FE) model and appropriate phenomenological failure criteria is used to study the progressive failure behaviours of the blades subjected to different types of quasi-static loads. The experimental load-displacement curves as well as failure loads and locations for different failure modes are used to validate the suitability of the proposed failure analysis method.

    Notes: The first measurement of ion photodissociation product recoil velocity and angular anisotropy in an octopole ion guide are presented. The experimental and numerical procedures required to obtain photofragment ion translational energy and angular distributions are discussed. Cluster ions are photodissociated in an octopole ion guide, and photofragment ion velocity distributions are measured using time-of-flight (TOF). The instrumental discrimination function is determined using guiding field variation (VAR). A validation study using the 2Σg+←2Σu+ transition of Ar2+ probed at 300 nm and a photodissociation dynamics study of (N2O⋅H2O)+ to form N2OH++OH, N2O++H2O, and H2O++N2O in the 458–657 nm range are presented. The H2O+ and N2O+ photofragment translational energy and angular distributions are derived, and new information regarding the photodissociation of the (N2O⋅H2O)+ cluster ion is obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present low energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) and visible photodissociation (PD) data of jet-cooled (N2O,H2O/D2O)+ cluster ions. The same three fragment ions are observed in both CID and PD, namely, H2O+/D2O+, N2O+, and N2OH+/N2OD+. The H2O+ and N2O+ product channels exhibit a small deuterium isotope effect in both CID (10%) and PD (15%). The N2OH+ product channel, on the other hand, exhibits a much larger deuterium isotope effect for CID (30%) and PD (230%). The large difference in deuterium isotope effects observed in the N2OH+ product channel for CID and PD suggests that this product is formed via collision-induced and photoinduced proton-transfer reactions. These results are consistent with the interpretation that a single isomeric form, namely a (N2O⋅H2O)+ association complex, predominates. No evidence is found supporting the existence of a proton-transfer complex, i.e., N2OH+⋅OH. Evidence for the formation of minor amounts of a weakly bound isomeric form with the charge localized on the H2O moiety, i.e., N2O⋅H2O+, is found. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An 8-week trial was conducted to assess the feasibility of replacing soybean meal (SBM) by lupin seed meal (LSM) in simulated commercial diets for juvenile tilapia starting at 0.3 g. Of the dietary protein (26% crude protein), 3.45% was from fishmeal and the rest came from the vegetable protein sources. The protein source of the control (C) diet came mainly from SBM and none (0%) from LSM. For the other diets, 33%, 67%, or 100% of the SBM protein was replaced by protein from either whole or dehulled LSM. One further diet was used: AW100, where alkaloid of the whole lupin seed was reduced. Survival, growth, and feed performance were compared among seven orthogonal contrasts to determine the effects of replacing SBM with whole LSM or dehulled LSM, and of reducing the alkaloid content. No differences in survival were found among all contrasts. No differences in fish growth and feed performance were found between feeding diet C and the other six diets ((whole, dehulled) × (33, 67, and 100)). Dehulled LSM diets resulted in better growth and feed performance than the whole LSM diets. Partial replacement of SBM by either dehulled LSM or whole LSM in diets obtained better growth and feed performance than total replacement. The AW100 diet resulted in equal fish growth but better feed performance than the W100 diet. This study concluded that partial, but not total, replacement of soybean protein with lupin seed protein in juvenile tilapia diets resulted in better, or at least equal, growth and feed performance. Dehulling further enhanced the growth and performance of LSM. Alkaloid removal improved feed performance but not the growth.
