Description: This report contains results of measurements of the fallout radionuclides 90Sr, 137Cs , 239,240Pu , and 241Am in large volume seawater samples collected between 1972 and 1974 in the Atlantic and Pacific as part of Geochemical Ocean Sections (GEOSECS) program. The stations for which data are reported include both the North and South Atlantic oceans and latitudes north of 20° S in the Pacific Ocean. The 90Sr and 137Cs data set has been corrected by a procedure which estimates independently the analytical blank for the laboratory which made the analysis. When the data quality and spacing permit, water column inventory estimates were made for each nuclide over depth intervals appropriate to the nuclide's distribution.
Description: Funding was provided by the United States Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC02-EV03563.

Notes: [Auszug] A series of pooled and individual fish liver and sediment samples were selected for analysis. It has been well documented that stable cadmium is concentrated by the liver of fish5'6. Liver analysis offered the most sensitive test for presence of 113mCd in the marine environment, especially at those ...

Notes: [Auszug] Background levels of plutonium in the ocean were first determined3 at this laboratory in 1964 (see also refs. 4 and 5) when it emerged that certain marine algae accumulated plutonium so effectively that they might be used to detect small concentration changes in seawater that would be difficult to ...

Notes: [Auszug] Reported plutonium levels in fish from both Kwajalein and Enewetak lagoons, suggest that Kwajalein Lagoon contains significantly more plutonium in its environment than would be expected from worldwide fallout levels alone, although quantities of plutonium greater than fallout concentrations have ...

Notes: Abstract Flux flow resistivity ρ f and upper critical fieldH c2 of ideal type II amorphous bulk supercbnductors Zr3Ni and Zr3Rh on both as-quenched and thermally relaxed states have been studied. It is found that thermal annealing does not change the temperature dependence ofH c2 in homogeneous superconductors. The temperature and field dependence of ρ f in all samples studied exhibits a universal scaling relation of the form ρ f /ρ n =f(h, t), where ρ n is the normal state resistivity, andh andt are the reduced field and reduced temperature, respectively. The results are compared with predictions of the time-dependent microscopic theories for bulk superconductors in the dirty limit. In the low-field region (H≪H c2 ) the viscosity coefficient contains both the ordinary (Bardeen-Stephen, Tinkham) and anomalous (Gor'kov-Kopnin) terms. ForH⋍H c2 the results agree qualitatively with the theory of Imai with pair-breaking in the anomalous term. Implications of the present results are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Extensive shrimp farming around Deep Bay, Hong Kong, began in the mid-1940‘s after the construction of intertidal ponds (gei wai) among the coastal mangroves. The ponds are increasingly being seen as an example of how wetlands can be used sustainablysince they are naturally stocked with shrimp postlarvae (e.g. Metapenaeus ensis) and young fish (e.g. Mugil cephalus) flushed into the ponds from Deep Bay. Once inside, these shrimps and fish feed on naturally occurring detritus on the pond floor. The only gei wai remaining in the Territory, are those at the WWF Hong Kong Mai Po Marshes Nature Reserve, adjacent to Deep Bay. Analysis of the shrimp production between 1990–1995 showed that there were two seasonal peaks, from April–June (Recruitment-I)and from July–October (Recruitment-II). The second peak was significantly lower than the first (p 〈0.001), especially from those gei wai in the southern part of the reserve which are much closer to a polluted river. The average harvest from each gei wai had also significantly declined from40.9 ±6.0 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1990 to15.1 ±3.6 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1995 (p 〈0.01). This decline can be attributed to the abundance of predatory fish in the gei wai, and increasing water pollution in Deep Bay which adversely affects the amount of shrimp larvae for stocking the gei wai, as well as the quality of water for flushing the ponds during the rearing and harvesting seasons. Despite this, those gei wai which are not-commercially viable can still support many non-commercial, more pollution tolerant fish and shrimp species. As a result, the management of the segei wai has been altered such that their objective is to provide feeding habitat for piscivorous waterbirds, which is also in line with the aims of the nature reserve.

Notes: Abstract There continue to be reports in the literature that suggest a difference in the behavior of239+240Pu and238Pu in some aquatic environments. Plutonium isotopes have been measured in marine samples collected over 3 decades from Enewetak atoll, one of the sites in the Marshall Islands used by the United States between 1946 and 1958 to test nuclear devices. The plutonium isotopes originated from a variety of complex sources and could possibly coexist in this environment as different physical-chemical species. However results indicate little difference in the mobility and biological availability of239+240Pu and238Pu.

Notes: Abstract Forensic analyses of debris from the fatal explosion of an electrochemical “cold fusion” cell at SRI International were conducted at LLNL at the request of Cal-OSHA. One investigation focused on the possibility of conventional nuclear reaction mechanisms contributing to the total energy inventory of the incident. Selected metal components of the electrolysis apparatus were subjected to nondestructive γ-ray spectrometry with high-sensitivity, low-background Ge detector systems. The anticipated analytes in these studies were radioactivation products potentially induced in the explosion residue by either fast or thermal neutrons. The results of this investigation were negative within the temporal constraints of the incident and the analytical sensitivities of the instrumentation.
