Notes: Two isomeric benzophenone derivatives, 3-hydroxy-4′-carboxy- and 4-hydroxy-3′-carboxybenzophenone, were synthesized and used to prepare new homo- and copoly(keto esters) with some commercial comonomers. Polymerizations were performed both by solution and melt polycondensation methods which affect the inherent viscosity and solubility of the resultant products. Yields were always almost quantitative independently of the synthetic method employed. All the samples exhibited very high thermal stability. Phase behaviour and morphology of the polyesters have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and optical microscopy. A liquid-crystalline (LC) phase was observed in most of the specimens containing commercial hydroxy acids in percentages higher than 30 mol-%, while both homopolymers melt to an isotropic liquid. Preliminary gravimetric sorption experiments, using acetone as a penetrant, were carried out on films prepared from some of the copolymers able to give both isotropic non-crystalline and nematic LC morphologies. The penetrant sorption was strongly reduced by the presence of the frozen nematic LC phase that behaves similarly to the conventional crystalline ordered state.

Notes: Several results are reported concerning the nucleation mechanism connected with the crystallization from a dilute solution containing a sharp fraction of low molecular weight polyethylene. The correlation between the number of nuclei and some parameters of the process, such as the concentration of the solution and the crystallization temperature, suggests a polymolecular mechanism involving the formation of nuclei with various stabilities. Other aspects of the phenomenon are discussed, which probably occur also in the crystallization of the unfractionated polymer.

Notes: Electric field-induced instabilities are investigated in the thermotropic mesophases of polyesters synthesized from 4,4′-isopropenylenediphenol and adipic acid (polyester 1) or adipic acid and (+)-3-methyladipic acid (50:50) (copolyester 2). D. C. and low frequency A. C. voltages are applied. Polyester 1 behaves like a conductive nematogen with negative dielectric anisotropy. The Williams domain pattern and the dynamic scattering mode are observed; at about 5 kHz the existence of a cut-off frequency is foreseen. According to the behavior of low molecular weight cholesterics, copolyester 2 goes from a predominantly planar texture to a focal conic one when the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis of the planar texture. Periodic perturbations arise in polyester 1 doped with cholesteric copolyester 2 when the field is applied perpendicular to a cholesteric planar texture with oily streaks. The frequency dependence of the threshold voltage Vt for square grid is reported. As in nematic polyester 1 at about 5-10 kHz Vt appears to diverge. The behavior above Vt is in line with the results reported for low molecular weight nematic-cholesteric mixtures with εa 〈 0. The square grid pattern is replaced by the tilted polygonal texture which relaxes when the field is turned-off. Due to the higher viscosity of the polymer the recovery of the planar texture is slower than in the case of conventional mesogens.

Notes: Many samples of a semiflexible thermotropic polyester were synthesized by low-temperature solution polycondensation of 2-methylhydroquinone (5) and 4,4′-sebacoyldioxydibenzoyl chloride (4) and characterized by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The influence of some experimental parameters, such as polymerization temperature, tertiary amine and monomer concentration, on polymer yields and molecular weights was studied. Thermal behaviour, in terms of thermal stability of the polyesters and range of mesophase stability, was investigated as a function of the molecular weight of the samples. Thermal treatments and X-ray diffraction at different temperatures were performed to achieve a better understanding of the transitions characteristic of this polyester. All the samples give a nematic phase; on as-polymerized specimens a solid-solid transition was also detected.

Notes: 3,4′-Substituted aromatic monomers, consisting of two phenylene units joined together by linking groups such as ketone or methylene, have recently been used for the preparation of quasi-rigid fully aromatic thermotropic polymers, based on conformational isomerism, with accessible transition temperatures. In this work the polyester of 3,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl ether and hydroquinone is considered: an Ullmann condensation has been carried out for the preparation of the asymmetric monomer, and low-temperature solution polycondensation has been used to synthesize the polymer. Although a liquid crystalline behavior could be expected, the polyester melts to an isotropic phase. Several copolymers have been prepared, by partially substituting either the asymmetric monomer with terephthalic acid or hydroquinone with different diphenols. The attempt to decrease the stability of the crystalline phase did not lead to significant results. The appearance of the nematic phase in some samples has been attributed to an increased chain stiffness, expressed in terms of persistence length as derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Notes: Recently, flexible rod-like monomers based on conformational isomerism have been used to synthesize fully aromatic thermotropic polymers of reduced processing temperature and good thermal stability. 3,4′-Dihydroxy and 3,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl ethers HE and DE, obtained by modified Ullmann condensations between proper hydroxy and bromo derivatives, are investigated as basic components for homo- and copolyesters with the above-mentioned characteristics. Homopolymers from HE and terephthaloyl chloride or DE chloride and 2-methyl (or phenyl) hydroquinone, synthesized by low temperature solution polycondensation, melt to an isotropic fluid; the chain packing is frustrated in the latter by asymmetrical substitution on the aromatic rings, which causes a sequence randomization as well as an increased chain separation. The incorporation of linear rigid units, by partial substitution of the flexible monomers with 1,4 aromatic moieties, leads to thermotropicity, but the critical content of 1,4 units varies with the steric hindrance of the diphenol. Variation of chain rigidity, arising from the chemical structure, composition and sequence distribution, can account for the thermal behavior of the samples and, in particular, for their different abilities to give liquid crystalline behavior.

Notes: The synthesis of two new isomeric asymmetrically disubstituted disulfide monomers, [4-(3-hydroxyphenylthio)benzoic acid and 3-(4-hydroxyphenylthio)benzoic acid], with potential applications as all-aromatic polymer chain flexibilizers and flame-retardant additives, is here reported. The preparation and characterization of their homo- and copolymers obtained with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, terephthalic acid and hydroquinone or its phenyl and methyl derivatives is also described. The purity of the monomers has been determined by gas chromatography, elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. Both monomers and polymers have been characterized by several techniques. DSC analysis and optical microscopy in polarized light have been used to determine the phase behaviour of the polymers. The remarkable differences in crystallinity and mesogenicity of the polymers derived from the two isomeric monomers are compared to the behaviour of copolymers containing the analogous oxygen-bridged compounds.
