Notes: Abstract Time differential perturbed angular correlation and nuclear orientation studies of the electric quadrupole interaction for Hg in Sb have been performed. The effective field gradients |V zz eff (HgSb)|=1.43(18)×1017V cm−2 at room temperature andV zz eff (HgSb)=+1.8(2) × 1017V cm−2 below 0.05 K have been derived. These two values are no indication for an anomalous temperature dependence of the effective field gradient for Hg in Sb. The value of the electric field gradient fits well into the systematics for Hg in other hosts. It is shown that the electronic enhancements of the field gradients are correlated to the valence of the impurities and are rather insensitive to the host properties.

Notes: Abstract By implantation of181Hf ions radiation damage is produced in platinum. Subsequent annealing of the samples leads to the trapping of a unique defect at the probe atoms. The temperature dependence of the resulting electric field gradient eq(T) is measured by use of the TDPAC-method. Assuming a relation eq(T)=eq(0)·(1−B·T 3/2) one findsB=(1.9±0.7)×10−6 K−3/2. This low value is of the same magnitude as the corresponding values for111Cd in various locally distorted cubic metals.

Notes: Abstract P-n junctions of silicon-wedge microcontacts with variable constrictions down to 0.1 μm diameter exhibit current transport behavior completely different from the conventional large-area junctions. Generation and recombination dominate for junctions larger than 1 μm diameter; smaller junctions show a predominance of space charge and resistive effects.

    Notes: Abstract Theg-factor of the 2+ rotational state of184W was redetermined by an IPAC measurement in an external magnetic field of 9.45 (5)T as: $$g_{2^ + } (^{184} W) = + 0.289(7).$$ In the evaluation the remeasured half-life of the 2+ state: $$T_{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} (2^ + ) = 1.251(12)ns$$ was used. TDPAC-measurements with a sample of carrierfree184Re in high purity iron gave the hyperfine fields: $$B_{300 K}^{hf} (^{184} W_2 + \underline {Fe} ) = 70.1(21)T$$ and $$B_{40 K}^{hf} (^{184} W_{2^ + } \underline {Fe} ) = 71.8(22)T.$$ A comparison with the hyperfine field known from a spin echo experiment with183W g Fe leads to the hyperfine anomaly: $$^{184} W_{2^ + } \Delta ^{183} W_g = + 0.145(36).$$ The hyperfine splitting observed in a Mössbauer source experiment with another sample of carrierfree184m Re in high purity iron indicates that the smaller splitting, measured previously by a Mössbauer absorber experiment is due to the high tungsten concentration in the absorber. The new value for theg-factor of the 2+ state together with the result of the Mössbauer experiment allow an improved calibration for our recent investigation of theg R -factors of the 4+ and 6+ rotational states. The recalculated values are: $$g_{4^ + } (^{184} W) = + 0.293(23)$$ and $$g_{6^ + } (^{184} W) = + 0.299(43).$$ The remeasured 792-111 keVγ-γ angular correlation $$W(\Theta ) = 1 - 0.034(4) \cdot P_2 + 0.325(6) \cdot P_4 $$ gives for the mixing ratio of theK-forbidden 792keV transition: $$\delta ({{E2} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{E2} {M1}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {M1}}) = - \left( {17.6\begin{array}{*{20}c} { + 1.8} \\ { - 1.5} \\ \end{array} } \right).$$ A detailed investigation of the attenuation ofγ-γ angular correlations in liquid sources of184Re and184m Re revealed the reason for erroneous results of early measurements of the 2+ g R -factor: The time dependence of the perturbation is not of a simple exponential type. It contains an unresolved strong fast component.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine interaction of dilute57Fe in the rare earth (RE)metals Gd to Lu was investigated by Mössbauer measurements with57Co doped RE sources. In all hosts well split, 2-lines spectra were observed at room temperature, with slight asymmetries of the line intensities in some cases. The quadrupole splitting eQVzz/2 increases from 0.29 mm/sec for Gd to 0.50 mm/sec for Tb, and decreases by less than 10 % between Tb and Lu. Only about 10 % of the corresponding electric fieldgradient (EFG) can be accounted for by the ionic EFG on a substitutional RE site. The temperature dependence of the EFG was measured in the case of Tb. No variation within 3 percent was found between 300 K and 700 K. Measurements of the magnetic hyperfine interaction at low temperatures were carried out in Tb. The saturation field of57Fe in this host is Hhf(FeTb;4.2 K)=25(2) KOe. The temperature dependence of the magnetic hyperfine field does not follow the host magnetization (Tc=220K) but vanishes at about 80 K. Similar anomalies of Hhf(T) have previously been observed for other transition element impurities in the RE ferromagnets.

Notes: Abstract 199Tl ions were implanted into a Be single crystal. From time differential perturbed γe− angular correlation experiments with the 5/2− state of199Hg the effective electric field gradientV zz eff =±15.2(1.8)×1017 V · cm−2 was deduced for Hg on an octahedral interstitial site in Be. From a nuclear orientation experiment, the sign ofV zz eff for197mHg implanted in Be is determined. In time differential perturbed βγ angular correlation experiments with the 5/2 state of199Hg populated in the β-decay of199Au implanted into Be, the effective electric field gradient for Hg on a substitutional site in Be was determined asV zz eff =−1.2(2)×1017V · cm−2. The dependence of the site population of Tl implanted in Be on annealing was investigated by use of the channeling technique. In a comparison of the derived effective field gradients with the corresponding lattice field gradient contributions different electronic enhancement factors are derived for different sites of Hg in Be.

Notes: Abstract 197Hg,199Tl and199Au ions were implanted into Zn single crystals. From time differential perturbed e−-γ and β-γ angular correlation experiments with the 5−/2 states in197Hg and199Hg, respectively, the quadrupole interaction for Hg in Zn is reinvestigated. Only the data for the199Au sample exhibit a single unique quadrupole precession pattern in agreement with the result of the lattice location studies by use of the channeling technique, which show Hg to occupy random lattice sites in Zn while Au is substitutional. From the measured interaction frequency, sign and magnitude of the effective electric field gradient for Hg on the substitutional site in Zn is determined asV zz eff = +15.2(1.8)×1017V·cm−2. By comparison of this value to the corresponding lattice field gradient contribution an electronic enhancement factor ofK(HgZn)=2.6 is deduced in disagreement with a previous derivation of this quantity, but which supports the proposal that the electronic field gradient depends linearly upon the valence of the impurity probe atom.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic hyperfine fieldH hf and the electric field gradientV zz at181Ta impurties in metallic Gd were determined by time differential perturbed angular correlation measurements with the 133 keV K-conversion electron 482 keV γ-cascade of181Ta. The sources for these measurements were prepared by implantation of radioactive181Hf ions into Gd. The results are: |H hf(TaGd; 77 K)|=285(14)kG, and |V zz(TaGd; 330 K)|=5.32(15)·1017V/cm2. The value ofH hf fits well into the systematics for 5d impurities in Gd and indicates a positive core polarisation contribution, which is expected if the conduction electrons of Gd have to a large extent d-character. The electric field gradients of the 5d impurities in Gd are not consistent with a proportionality between the ionic and the electronic contribution.
