    Notes: It has been previously suggested that crossed-sightline correlation of electron cylotron emission might be used to measure magnetic fluctuations in high-temperature plasmas. Reported here are the results of a continuing project to determine under what conditions (if any) this measurement will be feasible. An initial conceptual design for the device hardware has been completed. Large portions of the numerical simulation are working, including ray-tracing and emission/absorption packages. An initial discussion of data analysis for the experimental data is presented, and an analysis of the uncertainty in the line center (magnetic field) measurement in terms of the experimental uncertainties is given.

    Notes: The standard laser Thomson scattering calibration technique involves the convolving of density and wavelength response calibrations. This usually includes an in situ Rayleigh scattering from neutral gas for an absolute density calibration at the laser wavelength. In addition, a spectral calibration (i.e., a National Bureau of Standards traceable lamp and white reflective plate) is required to determine the relative wavelength channel responses for the combination of collection optics, spectrometers, and associated detectors. This technique involves a considerable amount of time and effort in two-dimensional scattering systems because of the number of spectrometers/detectors and the large range of scattering and collection angles. An alternative technique employing a nominal 40-mJ, small-divergence tunable dye laser substituted into the Thomson scattering laser beam path is proposed. Rayleigh scattering (from ∼10-Torr H2) measurements are made at a high repetition rate (1–10 Hz) while the dye laser output wavelength is scanned. This includes in one step the in situ density and channel response calibrations.

    Notes: It has been previously suggested1 that crossed-sightline correlation of electron-cyclotron emission might be used to measure local fluctuations of the magnetic field in magnetically confined plasmas. Before implementing this idea in hardware, a computer (numerical) simulation of the diagnostic should reveal whether the idea has merit when applied to a less than ideal (realistic) experimental fusion device. A brief description of the proposed diagnostic, details of the simulation, and the results of numerical simulation as of the meeting date will be presented.

    Notes: The development of powdery mildew on five barley varieties selected for partial resistance in the field and lacking identifiable, effective race-specific resistance factors was examined. Inoculation tests demonstrated that a reduction in the number of colonies was a major component of this resistance. Microscopic examination of segments from the fourth and fifth leaf revealed several stages at which colony development was arrested. The failure of individual penetrations to establish compatible colony growth was classified as being due either to hypersensitive or to non-hypersensitive resistance in host epidermal cells. Varying proportions of these two types of resistance mechanism were evident in all varieties examined, including the susceptible controls. In four resistant varieties, one or other mechanism predominated. The possibility of enhancing partial resistance by combining sources in which different mechanisms operate is discussed.

    Notes: A method of counting freshly harvested spores of powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei), yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis) and brown rust (P. hordei) of barley as well as brown rust (P. recondita) of wheat, using infra-red reflectance spectrophotometry was investigated. A Neotec 6350 Research Composition Analyser was used to scan spore samples on glass-fibre filter disks in the near infra-red region of the spectrum (1100–2500 nm) and the amount of energy reflected at 1400 different wavelengths recorded. Three wavelengths (1900, 2252 and 2308 nm) that together gave the best multiple correlation with spore populations counted on a haemocytometer slide were selected. Partial regression coefficients for each fungal species were derived by relating reflectance energy values to direct spore counts. Utilizing these and the energy reflected at the three selected wavelengths, it was possible to count spore samples with high precision. Correlations 〉0.9 between numbers estimated by the instrument and those obtained using a haemocytometer slide (within the range 0–30000 spores) were achieved with all the fungi examined. Application of the technique to smaller, fixed-filter instruments as a routine method of counting spores is discussed.

    Notes: The development of powdery mildew on seven spring barley varieties lacking effective major resistance factors was compared in a small-plot field trial. Differences were observed at later growth stages indicating partial resistance in some varieties. Latent period and sporulation capacity were examined on the fifth or sixth leaf of these varieties plus several known to be susceptible, using plants raised under spore-free conditions. Latent period was extended in most partially resistant varieties compared with susceptible controls, more so at 5°C than at 10°C. Cumulative total spore production per colony over the 16-day sporulation period differed markedly between varieties, the most resistant yielding one-third as many spores as the susceptible controls. There was evidence that these resistance components were correlated with each other and with previous estimates of infection frequency. The significance of this finding, in relation to selection for improved levels of partial resistance, is discussed.

    Notes: The response of epidermal cells to attempted penetration by Erysiphe graminis was examined in the fifth leaf of 13 barley lines selected for partial resistance. In leaf segments fixed and stained 72 h after inoculation cell reactions were classified as susceptible or as exhibiting non-hypersensitive or hypersensitive resistance. The proportion of cells with each type of reaction varied in a continuous manner among the lines and there were significant differences between lines in the levels of non-hypersensitive and hypersensitive resistance. Crosses were made between lines exhibiting high and low levels of each resistance mechanism. Fifty challenged epidermal cells per duplicate leaf segment were examined on 45-50 F2 plants derived from two such crosses. The frequency distribution of each of the three types of cell reaction in the fifth leaf was found to be continuous and, in general, normally distributed and in no case was there a significant difference between parent and progeny mean values, suggesting that the two resistance mechanisms were under the control of several genes showing predominantly additive gene action.

    Notes: One of the major problems in Thomson scattering measurement of electron temperature is the suppression of stray light. Filters of AR-coated ruby with a high-percentage doping of Cr have been produced for use on SCATPAK II. The filters have negligible attenuation of the signal above 7000 A(ring) and attenuate light at the laser line by a factor of (approximately-equal-to)9. Experimental details of the filter performance, design, and fabrication are presented. The filter performance is compared with experimental measurements of the Cr-in-sapphire absorption cross section at the R1 line. Ruby filters present a cost-effective method of stray light suppression for experiments using ruby lasers and the red-shifted portion of the scattered spectrum.

    Notes: A two-dimensional Thomson scattering system is being designed for the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron experiment. This system will provide electron temperature and density measurements at 15 points along a vertical chord with each shot from a two-dimensional Te and ne map of an ATF toroidal cross section can be obtained. The horizontal Thomson scattering viewing port is offset by 15° toriodally from the ports passing the vertical laser beam. Translating and rotating mirors will be used to relay light from the viewing port to the collection lens. This makes it possible to scan horizontally, view as much of the vertical laser beam as possible, and to use a fixed focal length, fixed position lens. Three sets of spectrometers optimized to three temperature ranges will be used. At the output of each spectrometer, dispersed light will be detected by an array of five, seven, or eight photomultiplier tubes, depending on the temperature range of the spectrometer.

    Notes: The conceptual design and theory of diagnostics to measure electron temperature and density fluctuations using electron cyclotron emission (ECE) was proposed and a new, single-sightline ECE system with the heterodyne radiometer has been built for TEXT-U. This ECE system was designed to employ auto- and cross-correlation techniques. Calculations indicate that fluctuations as small as 0.2% in amplitude can be achieved from auto-correlation of the ECE signal. The cross-correlation technique, however, must be used to resolve the fluctuations in frequency. Auto- and cross-correlation between optically thick ECE channels will be used for our initial approach to electron temperature fluctuation measurement with the single-sightline ECE system. A description of the TEXT-U ECE system, investigation of the feasibility of this measurement, and the initial results of test, calibration, and operation are presented.
