Notes: Abstract Population dynamics of a Gari solida (Gray, 1828) population from Bahía Independencia, Peru (14°S) was studied between November 1989 and February 1995 (except for 1991) in order to investigate the effects of the climate phenomenon El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) which occurred in 1992/93. Results indicate that ENSO had negative effects on gonad production in 1992, when temperatures were very high, and positive effects in 1993, when temperatures were lower, but the warm period lasted longer than in 1992. Higher reproductive output in 1993 was achieved by several spawning events in addition to the normal pattern. Growth rate in 1990 was higher (K=0.495) than in 1993/94 (K=0.346). A possible explanation could be that more energy was allocated to reproduction, and thus less surplus energy remained for growth. The negative effect of ENSO on production in 1992 is indicated by the low P/B ratio (0.298); in all other years P/B was consistently higher (1990: 0.570; 1993: 0.597; 1994: 0.597). From 1990 to 1994 a reduction of mean annual biomass from 189.3 to 14.4 g ash-free dry weight m-2 was also observed which may be related to fishery activities. The consistency of P/B ratio is best explained by the higher somatic production of the smaller individuals remaining after the larger individuals had been removed selectively by fishermen. Based on the results presented in this study and from the literature, a model is proposed depicting how ENSO may negatively affect bivalve populations. Two main factors are mentioned, increased temperature and reduction of assimilated energy.

Notes: Abstract. Fish mortality in the River Umia, near Villagarcia de Arosa, Pontevedra, Spain, which occurred after a discharge from a food sewage works, is studied. Physico-chemical parameters of water samples from sewage and from the River Umia were studied and concentrations of ammonia sufficiently high to cause toxic effects in fish (702 mg/1 and 302 mg/1 as total ammonia) were found. The toxicity of two concentrations of ammonia was investigated on goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), using water quality values the same as found in the River Umia, to obtain the same concentrations of un-ionized ammonia (2·13 mg/1 and 0·91 mg/1). Fish exposed to high concentrations died within 24 h and three of six, which were exposed to the lowest concentration died within 96h. All fish at first showed symptoms of hyper excitability and hyperventilation, and at times of rest showed a decrease in respiration. Post-mortem findings generally included gill congestion and haemorrhage.

Notes: Published reports describing the normal embryo development of Oryzias latipes Temminck and Schlegel, 1846, have relied on exhaustive descriptive processes supported by a series of detailed line drawn figures representing the ideal condition for each stage. Other attempts to trace its development have reported microphotographic descriptions but either did not follow the entire development or lacked clarity and gave only a vague description. In this report, we provide a complete descriptive in vivo color atlas guide of O. latipes normal embryo development. Using the orange–red strain, intact chorionated eggs were incubated under a 16 h light, 8 h dark cycle at 25 ± 1°C. A total of 39 stages were differentiated, from the unfertilized egg to the 24-h-old fry. Our contribution is such that each stage has been photographed from different perspectives with a description made based on key features for rapid identification. This atlas is a practical tool for in vivo visualization and identification of each stage in O. latipes embryo development useful for further developmental and toxicological studies with this fish. This may as well be of help in the standardization of future protocols in which these early moments in the life of the fish may be involved.

Notes: The role of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) gill cells in uptake of the salmonid pathogen Renibacterium salmoninarum was examined using in vitro, whole animal and isolated perfused head models. Uptake of the pathogen was observed only when dissected gill tissue was exposed to the live pathogen. In contrast, live cells of Yersinia ruckeri interacted with the gill epithelia in the isolated perfused head model, confirming the findings of previous studies with whole animal and in vitro systems. These results are discussed in relation to the role of gill tissue in bacterial kidney disease (BKD) pathogenesis and in antigen trapping.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of the present work was to study the seasonal as well as the site-specific variations in the structure of peroxisomes and in the activity of the peroxisomal marker enzyme catalase in digestive epithelial cells of mussels to validate the potential use of these parameters as early biomarkers of environmental organic pollution in estuarine ecosystems. For this purpose, mussels were sampled monthly for 14 months in two Basque estuaries (Bay of Biscay) with different degrees of pollution. Stereological procedures were applied to detect changes in peroxisome structure, and microspectrophotometry was used to quantify changes in catalase activity. The animals from the two studied sampling sites presented differences in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) burdens, mussels from Plentzia generally showing lower total PAH contents than mussels from Galea. The peroxisome structure of the animals from the two estuaries suffered seasonal variations that were of different kind and intensity in both sites. In this way, a strong peroxisome proliferatory response was found in mussels sampled in Plentzia during the summer months, while mussels from Galea presented few variations along the year. Catalase activity behaved similarly in the animals sampled in the two estuaries, with higher values in spring. It appeared that mussels exposed chronically to PAHs and other pollutants, such as those from Galea, lost their ability to respond to this exposure in terms of peroxisome proliferation. In contrast, mussels collected in Plentzia effectively responded to an increased bioavailability of organic pollutants during the summer by increasing peroxisome volume and surface and numerical densities in digestive epithelial cells. However, these increases were transient because elevated PAH body burdens detected in mussels sampled in Plentzia in autumn were not accompanied by a peroxisome proliferatory response. Further studies are needed before changes in peroxisomal structure and in the activity of catalase could be used as early biomarkers to assess environmental quality in pollution monitoring programs like the Mussel Watch.
