    Notes: In order to study impurity behavior on the JT-60 plasma, a spectroscopic diagnostic system, which is capable of measuring many spectra of impurity ions and their spatial distributions simultaneously, has been developed. This system consists of interchangeable unit-type spectrographs which have different lines of sight. Four types of grazing incidence spectrographs are prepared as unit-type spectrographs. These spectrographs cover the nominal wavelength regions 0.5–5, 0.5–50, 2.0–50, and 50–122 nm, respectively, and have holographic gratings with flat focal fields. Image-intensified 1024- or 512-channel photodiode arrays are used as detectors for all spectrographs. Four unit-type spectrographs are used for observing the main plasma, and two unit-type spectrographs are used for observing the plasma near the null point of the diverted discharge. One of these spectrographs has been calibrated absolutely in the wavelength region 27.5–120 nm using synchrotron radiation from the Photon Factory (National Laboratory for High Energy Physics).

    Notes: The divertor impurity monitoring system of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor has been designed. The main functions of this system are to identify impurity species and to measure the two-dimensional distributions of the particle influxes in the divertor plasmas. The wavelength range is 200–1000 nm. The viewing fans are realized by molybdenum mirrors located in the divertor cassette. With additional viewing fans seeing through the gap between the divertor cassettes, the region approximately from the divertor leg to the x point will be observed. The light from the divertor region passes through the quartz windows on the divertor port plug and the cryostat, and goes through the dog-leg optics in the biological shield. Three different type of spectrometers: (i) survey spectrometers for impurity species monitoring, (ii) filter spectrometers for the particle influx measurement with the spatial resolution of 10 mm and the time resolution of 1 ms, and (iii) high dispersion spectrometers for high resolution wavelength measurements are designed. These spectrometers are installed just behind the biological shield (for λ〈450 nm) to prevent the transmission loss in fiber and in the diagnostic room (for λ≥450 nm) from the point of view of accessibility and flexibility. The optics have been optimized by a ray trace analysis. As a result, 10–15 mm spatial resolution will be achieved in all regions of the divertor. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent development of the JT-60U charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) diagnostic system is reported. The measurements of the radial profiles of the ion temperatures, the toroidal and poloidal rotation velocities, and the impurity density are based on CXR spectra of fully stripped carbon ions induced by neutral beam injection. Measurements are made simultaneously at 59 spatial points (23 toroidal and 36 poloidal) with a time resolution of 1/60 s throughout the full discharge pulse of 15 s. Considerable effort has been expended to ensure the automatic provision of reliable profile data, where the mechanical components of the system must cope with both a baked tokamak vessel (∼300 °C) and an expected disruption-induced acceleration of up to 60 g, where g denotes the gravitational acceleration, i.e., 9.8 m2/s. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract To aid in designing high-speed optical networks, the fundamental limitations of lightwave transmission systems are investigated from the viewpoint of fibre nonlinearities, particularly of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). When SBS occurs, the fibre launch power is usually restricted; thus, SBS is detrimental to lightwave systems. The effects of SBS on signals transmitted in fibres are clarified for several modulation schemes, especially coherent modulation schemes. A generalized model based on the maximum power spectrum density in the signals is proposed to estimate the degree of SBS generation. The maximum repeaterless transmissions for various bit rates, laser diode linewidths, and Brillouin gains of optical fibres are presented. The degradation of transmission due to SBS is clarified experimentally, focusing on the bit error rate, fibre input power, and spectra of signals transmitted in fibres. In addition, various techniques for suppressing the SBS effects are proposed. A repeaterless transmission experiment conducted over 364.3 km using optical booster amplifiers is presented to verify the effectiveness of the SBS suppression technique.

    Notes: We cultured eight-cell mouse embryos to blastocyst stage, divided them into three groups according to the time of blastocoel formation, and transferred them separately into recipients. The proportion of live young from the fast-developing embryos was slightly high (49%) but not significantly different from those of other embryos (38% and 39%). However, the sex ratio of live young from the fast- and slow-developing embryos was significantly shifted toward the male (71%) and to the female (80%), respectively.

    Notes: Fertilized mouse eggs were centrifuged at 5,000g, 10,000g, 15,000g, and 20,000g for 3 and 10 min or at 25,000g for 10 min. The pronuclei of centrifuged eggs became more distinctive than those of uncentrifuged eggs. The proportion of centrifuged and uncentrifuged eggs that developed to blastocysts was not significantly different. There was also no significant difference in the proportion of live fetuses obtained following the transfer of blastocysts developed from centrifuged and uncentrifuged eggs. This study demonstrated that there is no effect of centrifugation on the subsequent development of mouse eggs.
