    Notes: Abstract Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the presence of microorganisms, probably bacteria, on the gut surface of earthworms. The washed surfaces of the intestines of two earthworms, Lumbricus terrestris and Octolasion cyaneum, were examined. Numerous organisms resembling bacteria were observed throughout the gut, some in situations suggesting attachment. Compared with similar investigations in other invertebrates, there were fewer bacteria, showing less morphological diversity, on the earthworm gut surface. The majority of organisms viewed were coccoid, some were filamentous, and a few rod-shaped cells were observed. Cocci, often in chains, were seen in the foregut of both species. Although cocci were also numerous in the midgut region, particularly in the typhlosole, in O. cyaneum tufts of segmented, filamentous organisms were also seen with some segments resembling spores. Fewer organisms were found in the hindgut, but in L. terrestris there were segmented, filamentous organisms, attached to the epithelium by way of a “socket-like” structure, similar to that by which segmented, filamentous bacteria (SFBs) are attached to the ileum of rats and mice. Transmission electron microscopy of the hindgut of L. terrestris was undertaken to explore the structure and attachment of SFBs to the gut epithelium. However, although a few rod-shaped bacteria were observed, no SFBs were located. The observations reported here provide evidence that earthworms have an attached gut microflora of filamentous microorganisms which are probably indigenous, and as far as we are aware this is the first published report of such findings in these invertebrates.

    Notes: Summary Denitrification (using the acetylene block method) was determined in earthworm casts and soils from permanent, drained or undrained pasture plots fertilized with 0 or 200 kg N ha-1 year-1 as ammonium nitrate. Rates of N2O production from soil cores were about three times higher from the fertilized than from the unfertilized plots while drainage had a relatively small effect. Denitrification rates from casts were 3–5 times higher than those from soil irrespective of the drainage treatment. Casts generally had higher NO inf3 sup- , NH inf4 sup+ , and moisture contents, and higher microbial respiration rates than soil. Rates of N2O production were determined primarily by NO inf3 sup- supply, secondarily by moisture; available C did not appear to limit denitrification in these pastures. Estimates of the potential contribution of casts to denitrification ranges from 10.1% of 29.3 kg ha-1 year-1 from the unfertilized, drained plot to 22% of 82.5 kg ha-1 year-1 from the fertilized undrained plot.

    Notes: Summary The processes of C and N mineralization carried out by microorganisms are affected directly and indirectly by invertebrates over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Microfauna track temporal changes in bacterial and fungal populations in soil microsites, particularly in the rhizosphere, which alters the dynamic balance between N mobilization and immobilization. The feeding activities of mesofauna can determined the distribution, activities and composition of fungal communities. Macrofauna have major effects on fungal and bacterial activities, both directly, through feeding and gut passage, and indirectly, by affecting the microbial environment in litter and soil. Soil biological processes can therefore be considered a hierarchy of successive levels of organization where the macro-, meso- and microfauna influence microbial activities at different scales in the habitat mosaic. The spatial components of this hierarchy are integrated by plant roots; root morphology must therefore define the scales at which the system operates under different plant nutrient regimes.
