    Notes: The path integral formulation of the Kirkwood diffusion equation is used to derive the perturbation expansion of the intrinsic viscosity in powers of the hydrodynamic interaction. Within the preaveraging approximation the perturbation expansion yields the Zimm formula for the intrinsic viscosity. The renormalization of the dynamical viscosity [η(ω)] has been explicitly carried out for both zero and large frequencies. At intermediate frequencies the renormalization of [η(ω)] has been performed in an approximate manner. A simple analytical expression for the dynamical viscosity is given. For low ω the real part of [η(ω)] has a plateau, while for large ω the Zimm behavior ([η(ω)]∼ω−1/3) is obtained.

    Notes: We consider the effects of critical fluctuations in systems, which are undergoing microphase separations, such as diblock copolymers and interpenetrating networks. We predict the critical regime which, governed by the elastic constant C0, prevents the system from global separation. We obtain that in two dimensions there is no narrowing of the critical fluctuations for large degrees of polymerization studied within the field theoretic renormalization group. The scattering function S(p) in the homogeneous phase is obtained to behave as (∂[p2S−1(p)]/∂p2)p→0 (approximately-equal-to)m0 p*(γ−1/ν), where γ and ν are the critical exponents and p*=2π/λ with λ being the dimension of the microphase.

    Notes: Abstract: Using the results of the recently studied problem of adsorption of a Gaussian polymer in a weak periodic surface potential we study the influence of a single rod like defect on the polymer being localized in the periodic surface potential. We have found that the polymer will be localized at the defect under condition u 〉 u c, where uc is the localization threshold in the periodic potential, for any infinitesimal strength of the interaction with defect. We predict that the concentration of monomers of the localized polymer decays exponentially as a function of the distance to the defect and is modulated with the period of the surface potential.

    Notes: Abstract. We present the statistical-mechanical theory of semiflexible polymers based on the connection between the Kratky-Porod model and the quantum rigid rotator in an external homogeneous field, and treatment of the latter using the quantum mechanical propagator method. The expressions and relations existing for flexible polymers can be generalized to semiflexible ones, if one replaces the Fourier-Laplace transform of the end-to-end polymer distance, 1/(k 2/3 + p), through the matrix $\tilde{P}(k,p) = (I + ikDM)^{-1}D$ , where D and M are related to the spectrum of the quantum rigid rotator, and considers an appropriate matrix element of the expression under consideration. The present work provides also the framework to study polymers in external fields, and problems including the tangents of semiflexible polymers. We study the structure factor of the polymer, the transversal fluctuations of a free end of the polymer with fixed tangent of another end, and the localization of a semiflexible polymer onto an interface. We obtain the partition function of a semiflexible polymer in half space with Dirichlet boundary condition in terms of the end-to-end distribution function of the free semiflexible polymer, study the behaviour of a semiflexible polymer in the vicinity of a surface, and adsorption onto a surface.

    Notes: Abstract: We consider the adsorption of a random heteropolymer onto an interface within the model of Garel et al. [#!gareletal89!#] by taking into account random self-interactions and ternary repulsive interactions between the monomers. Within the replica trick and by using a self-consistent preaveraging procedure we map the adsorption problem onto the problem of binding state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The analysis of the latter is treated within the variational method based on the 2nd Legendre transform. Our study reveals a complex behaviour of the localization of the heteropolymer. In particular, we predict a reentrant localization transition for moderate values of the asymmetry of the distribution function of the monomer sequences along the heteropolymer.
