Notes: : The dam impounding White Rock Lake was completed in 1910 to provide water for the City of Dallas. Since then, land use on the watershed has changed from entirely rural to over 77 percent urban. A model called SWRRB (Simulator for Water Resources in Rural Basins) was utilized to determine the effect of urbanization on water and sediment entering the lake. The simulation results show that, if urbanization had not occurred, then the annual surface runoff would be 135 mm rather than 151 mm and the annual sediment yield would be 4.4 t/ha rather than 4.1 t/ha. Also, the effect of urbanization on delivery ratios was shown and a positive linear correlation was found. Finally, the weather generator in SWRRB was utilized to estimate the loss of reservoir capacity until 2050 for three different land use management scenarios.

Notes: Preliminary studies were carried out on the effect of stocking rate during late autumn on a continuously stocked Lolium perenne-dominated sward at an upland site in central Scotland. Measurements were made of L. perenne tiller population density on 29 September and 2 November and of L. perenne net production, mean sward height and total herbage mass in early and late October and early and late November. Stocking rates were 12 ewes per ha during October and 8 and 16 ewes per ha during November. Sward height and herbage mass declined with time and more rapidly at the higher stocking rate. L. perenne growth per tiller and per unit area was influenced by time but not by stocking rate and was closely related to the 5·5°C soil temperature at 10 cm depth. Tiller senescence was greatly reduced at the higher stocking rate and/or the consequentially lower sward height and herbage mass. Tiller net production was therefore sustained at a positive level on the higher stocked sward throughout November while on the lower stocked sward it fell below zero early in November.

Notes: A simple, reliable system for long-range translation of scanned probe microscopy (SPM) samples is described. This system could easily be retrofitted to many existing SPMs. The sample is held magnetically onto the scan piezo tube, and is translated by stick-slip motion. The system is very reliable, and provides controllable step size ranging from 20 nm to 1 μm. Three stick-slip drive wave forms are described and tested: sawtooth, cycloid, and an "improved'' cycloid based on the resonance curve of a harmonic oscillator. Computer simulations of the stick-slip process are presented, and are in good agreement with experiment. Together, the experiments and simulations demonstrate that it is essential to consider the resonant response of the piezo when evaluating drive wave forms. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For a piezoelectric device with multiple electrodes, it should be possible to quantitatively and conveniently measure the piezoelectric coefficient d31 by use of the double piezoelectric effect, without the need for any unusual apparatus or a calibration sample. One pair of electrodes is used to excite the piezo, and another is used to measure the response. For example, for a piezoelectric tube this should allow measurement of d31 as a function of temperature or of lateral offset voltage. An important correction to the current theory is described. Measurements on two piezo tubes are presented for excitation voltages in the range of 0.5–110 Vpp. An inductive proximity sensor was used to measure the actual piezo motion. It is shown that the current theory disagrees with this and previous experiments by a simple factor of 2 for symmetric excitations. However, for asymmetric excitations the disagreement with theory is more complex, and the current theory does not accurately predict the effects of varying tube geometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Multiple medullas are most commonly found among the fine wool fibres, derived from secondary follicles, of which about 70 per cent in this breed are medul-lated. The type of medullation in the fine fibres varies from the uninterrupted to the fragmental grades described by Wildman3. Whereas the ...

Notes: [Auszug] ON Saturday night, the 17th inst., an instance of this form of lightning came under my observation. The day had been hot, the thermometer registering a temperature of about 710 F. in the shade during the middle of the day, which was bright and clear. In the evening, however, a curious ...
