Notes: Summary Gas-vacuoles consisting of collections of gas-cylinders, and continuity of the plasma membrane with lamellae, are observed at all stages of growth of Anabaena flos-aquae. In day+4 cells, increased numbers of invaginations of the plasma membrane are observed and the lamellae tend to lie parallel to the cell wall. Some evidence is presented which suggests an associated synthesis of α-granules and gas-cylinders by lamellae. Features of older cells are increased numbers of gascylinders, α-granules, structured granules, and large intralamellar vesicles which appear to correlate with the presence of pinkish vacuoles as observed with the light microscope. The mean percentage of the volume of cells occupied by gas-vacuoles is about 20% during exponential growth when the doubling time is 56.5 hours, increasing to 34% in day+24 cells when growth is stationary.

Notes: Summary Gas-cylinder membranes and α-granules were isolated from cells of the blue-green alga,Anabaena flos-aquae D 124. Gas-cylinder membranes, which are 1,100 Å wide after isolation, show striations having a periodicity of 50 Å. The membranes appear globular in section with a spacing of about 40 Å between globules. There are strong indications that the globules are proteinaceous with molecular weights of 22,000±2,000. Possible homologies of these membranes with viral coat protein are discussed. α-granules were shown by a variety of techniques to be polysaccharide.

Notes: Abstract. Phosphorus budgets have been compiled for two contrasting grassland farming systems in the UK; intensive dairy farming and extensive hill sheep production. Balance sheets of inputs, recycling of P through the soil–plant–animal pathway and outputs are presented to determine the potential rate of P accumulation in the two systems. A typical 57 ha intensive dairy farm with 129 lactating cows imports 2.48t P via fertilizer, bedding and concentrates, plus a small amount from the atmosphere, of which 0.98t are exported in milk, calves and transfer from soil to the aquatic environment. Therefore 1.5t of P are retained within the farm each year, which equates to an accumulation rate of 26 kg/ha in the plant-soil system. This surplus occurs despite a fertilizer input of only 16 kg/ha. However, a large proportion of P, equivalent to 27 kg/ha, is imported in feed concentrates. For the typical 841 ha hill sheep farm supporting 694 Blackface ewes, P inputs and outputs are 0.66 and 0.42 t/yr, respectively. Therefore, approximately 0.24t P are retained within the farm, which is equivalent to an accumulation rate of 0.28 kg/ha per yr. In comparison to the small annual inputs and outputs of P on the hill farm, much P, 2.48t, is recycled through the plant-soil and plant-animal-soil pathways on the hill sheep farm. For both farming systems there is a net input of P, although the rate of accumulation is ten times greater for the dairy farm where the annual retention of P represents 60% of the total P inputs, compared with 36% on the hill sheep farm.

Notes: 1. Lough Neagh is a large eutrophic lake covering 387 km2 with a mean depth of 8.9 m. It is an important natural resource, being the largest single source of potable water for Belfast, Northern Ireland.2. This report examines the causes of the year-to-year variation in the April–June (spring) algal biomass, measured as chlorophyll a, for the period 1974–92.3. The spring chlorophyll a declined following the introduction of a phosphorus (P) reduction programme at major sewage treatment works in 1981. However, since 1990 the chlorophyll a concentrations in the spring have increased.4. Time series methodology was employed to develop a model which explained 76% of the annual variation in spring chlorophyll a concentrations.5. The independent variables used in the multiple regression model were the previous year’s spring chlorophyll a concentration, soluble reactive P inputs for April–June and the particulate P concentration in the Lough during the previous summer.

Notes: Summary Rapid HPLC methods are described for the determinations of either free N-n-propylnorapomorphine (NPA) or the free and conjugated NPA in blood plasma. The methods employ a methanol protein-precipitation step that produces relatively good absolute recoveries, while permitting a simple work-up procedure without derivatization. Only 0.25 ml of plasma is required for a single determination at a sensitivity limit of 0.4μg NPA/ml plasma. Satisfactory accuracy and precision are achieved with the proposed assay.

Notes: The innervation and structure of the lung of the Australian snake-necked tortoise, Chelodina longicollis, was examined by using light microscopy including fluorescence histochemical techniques. The anterior lung was divided into a number of compartments with numerous alveolar spaces. The posterior lung was simpler and saclike in structure and alveolar spaces were absent. Smooth muscle fibers occurred in discrete muscle bands and in the walls of the septal bands. Ganglion cells occurred along nerve trunks throughout the lung but were more numerous in the posterior lung. Smooth muscle bands, the extrinsic pulmonary artery, and the arteries within the lung were sparsely innervated by adrenergic fibers. Substance P-containing sensory fibers were not demonstrated. The innervation and structure of the lung are compared to published work on other reptiles.
