    Notes: Abstract Yellow catfish, Mystus nemurus (Cuv. & Val.), is becoming one of the major freshwater species farmed by aquaculturists in Southeast Asia. It was of interest to examine levels of genetic subpopulation differentiation among samples of this species obtained from parts of its range, as well as to compare the genetics of wild and hatchery-bred fish. Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis and histochemical staining techniques were used to examine genetic variation within and among eight wild and one hatchery populations of M. nemurus from northern, northeastern, central and southern Thailand. Four tissues (heart, liver, kidney, and muscle) from individual specimens were used to analyze variations at 23 protein-coding loci. Fifteen of the 23 loci examined (65.22%), namely, ACP*, AAT-1*, EST-1*, EST-2*, GPI*, IDH-1*, IDH-2*, MDH-1*, MDH-2*, MDH-3*, ME*, PGM*, 6PGD*, SOD*, and HB*,were polymorphic at the 0.95 level. Observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.041 to 0.111, with an average of 0.068 ± 0.028. Genetic distances ranged from 0.005 to 0.164. The greatest genetic distance was found between the Chainat and the Suratthani populations (0.164), a level indicative of subspecific differentiation in M. nemurus from within Thailand.

    Description: Gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea is a damaging postharvest disease in tomato plants, and it is known to be a limiting factor in tomato production. This study aimed to evaluate antifungal activities of Vernonia amygdalina leaf extracts against B. cinerea and to screen the phytochemical compound in the crude extract that had the highest antifungal activity. In this study, crude extracts of hexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and water extracts with concentration levels at 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg/mL were shown to significantly affect the inhibition of B. cinerea. Among the crude extracts, dichloromethane extract was shown to be the most potent in terms of antifungal activities. The SEM observation proved that the treatment altered the fungal morphology, which leads to fungal growth inhibition. For the in vivo bioassay, the fruits treated with dichloromethane extract at 400 and 500 mg/mL showed the lowest disease incidence with mild severity of infection. There were 23 chemical compounds identified in V. amygdalina dichloromethane extract using GCMS analysis. The top five major compounds were dominated by squalene (16.92%), phytol (15.05%), triacontane (11.31%), heptacosane (7.14%), and neophytadiene (6.28%). Some of these significant compounds possess high antifungal activities. This study proved that V. amygdalina from dichloromethane extract could be useful for inhibiting gray mold disease on tomato fruit and has potential as a natural antifungal agent.

    Description: Mahisefid, Rutilus frisii kutum , is a cyprinid fish which is distributed from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan along the Caspian Sea. It is one of the economically important fish in the region. As part of the Iranian Fisheries Company’s policy to improve the stocks of this species, every year, fingerling of Mahisefid are released into the southern basin of the Caspian Sea. The main objective of this study was to determine populations in different of rivers. In total, 387 fish were collected from four rivers, including Lemir, Sefidrood, Shirrood and Tajan, where this fish migrates for spawning, in spring 2005. Thirteen conventional morphometric factors, 13 ratio and 12 Truss morphometrics were measured and calculated in this study. Conventional and Truss morphometric data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA Principal Component Analysis and discriminant. Average of coefficient of variation (CV%) of morphometric in males was 14.95, 10.28, 17.47 and 16.56 and in females was 21.35, 19.74, 18.25, and 19.74 in Lemir, Sefidrood, Shirrood and Tajan River, respectively, showing that all morphometric characters were significantly different (P〈0.05) among four sampling sites (populations). The first component of morphometrics 44.32% in males and 68.94% in females were positive, indicating that the conventional morphometric was good descriptor of the body shape variation among the populations, especially in females. The total cumulative variances were 76.6% and 87.8% in males and females, respectively, suggesting that this can be considered as a useful discriminator. The total cumulative variances were 64.27% and 64.21% in males and females, respectively. The first component of truss was 87.7% and 81.3% of the total variance, in males and females, respectively. The results of the present study suggest that each sampling site represents independent population in each river.

    Description: Mahisefid is the most popular fish in Iran with the highest economic value. The analysis of mitochondrial DNA has been extensively used as a marker for population genetic studies and is a powerful tool in studies of gene flow and evolutionary biology. Two hundred ninety four samples were collected from Sefid Rud River (100), Lamir River (98), Shir Rud River (48) and Tajan River (48) during spawning season. Out of 24 enzymes tested, four enzymes, namely TasI, HaeIII, HinfI and HincII were selected for this study. In the present study, the haplotype and nucleotide diversity of Mahisefid in four important rivers where fingerlings are produced, were carried out by using PCR-RFLP at mtDNA ND5/6 region. A total of 20 haplotypes were studied so that AAAA and BAAA haplotypes had the most frequency. The average haplotype frequency of AAAA and BAAA haplotypes were 29.93% and 27.55%, respectively. The maximum nucleotide diversity was 0.94%, the minimum was 0.80% and the average was 0.88%. Divergence between Lamir and Sefid Rud River and Shir Rud was 0.2% and between Lamir and Tajan, and Shir Rud River it was 0.1%. The average evolutionary distance was 0.015. The maximum evolutionary distance was 0.294 between ADAA and AAAB, ABAB and BDBA, BBAA and AABB. The average number of bases surveyed was 121.2 and the average number of fragments was 30.30. The study suggests that there was a low genetic variability in four populations of Mahisefid in the south of Caspian Sea. Mahisefid population can be divided into two main clusters, the first clade consists of Shir Rud River and Lamir River populations and the second clade consists of Tajan River and Sefid Rud River populations. The clustering of Mahisefid populations was not in accordance with their geographical areas or river systems.

    Notes: Abstract. The most comprehensive studies on a plant lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17) are those on the enzyme from papaya (Carica papaya) latex, published in 1967 and 1969. However, the N-terminal amino acid sequence of five amino acid sequence of this enzyme, determined by manual Edman degradation, did not allow assignment to any of the much later-classified families of glycosyl hydrolases. N-Terminal sequence analysis of 22 residues of papaya lysozyme now shows unambiguously that the enzyme belongs to the family 19 chitinases. It has properties similar to those of basic class I chitinases with lysozyme activity, such as cleavage specificity at the C-1 of N-acetylmuramic acid with inversion of configuration, but as it lacks an N-terminal hevein domain, it should be classified as a class II chitinase.

    Notes: Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) films produced by layer-by-layer (LBL)deposition technique were studied. The films were grown at different hydrogen to silane flow-rateratio on crystal silicon (111) substrate. The properties of films were investigated by X-raydiffraction (XRD), micro-Raman scattering spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectroscopy, optical transmission spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). These properties showed dependence on thehydrogen dilution of silane. Appearance of XRD peaks at diffraction angles of 28.4 o and 56.1 owhich correspond to silicon orientation of (111) and (311) respectively, were observed in all filmsindicating evidence of crystallinity in the films. Raman scattering results indicated that crystallinityin the films was due to the presence of nanocrystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix. Theenergy gap of the films showed dependence on the hydrogen content in the films. Increase innanocrystallite size resulted in increase in disorder at low hydrogen dilution films but films remainhomogenous with increase in nanocrystallite size for the high hydrogen dilution films
